I've been in a writing mood lately (see here, if you like creative writing--SHAMELESS PLUG OF GLORY), but I feel like doing something a bit different from the norm. So, my 9rules guys and gals, if you would be so kind, give me opening sentences to begin stories with!

In your replies, please include your name and a website address if you have one. I'll attribute you for the opening bit on my website.

No guarantees of superb quality, but I'll give it a go. If you hate what I create with your opening sentence, feel free to curse me. My writing is not genre-specific, so expect anything. I do, however, have a bit of a passion for science fiction and drama.

Thanks to anyone who takes part. :)

Line: Until I attended my own, I never quite understood why the word "funeral" started with "fun".

"That little voice in the back of her head was screaming 'Do not get near that van' but she found herself oddly drawn by the man calling to her from the drivers seat."

"Despite being a relatively insignificant ball of gas in an incomprehensibly vast galaxy, when falling towards it, Jupiter is the biggest thing in the universe."

I am uncertain on the correct punctuation for that.

Having never cared much for interfering people calling on unfamiliar doors, it was with some degree of reticence that he climbed these steps and, knowing what his words would do, he took a single breath and rang the bell.

Wow, can't remember the last time I saw this many pregnant sentences.

When are they due?

Ok, I just couldn't resist that. Sorry.

I knew it would only be matter of time before the letter, handwritten to support the serious nature of its content,my undoing or my saving grace, would arrive.

eh I changed it..lol

sentences - to support multiple participants not multiple sentences. I can read really.

But as I turn away from the window, even the endless slomo repeats of some lion pouncing on a gazelle on the new 70" Sony KDL-70X3500 can't distract me from the notion that I may or may not have slept with my mother — so, losing the mansion in the fire that still rages outside doesn't mean all that much to me.

Great stuff. And,hey, it is one sentence right?

Sandra's naked skin appeared to glow in the soft moonlight, her brunette hair black in the darkness of the room, her body graced itself as a peaceful yet almost lewd pose; she was beautiful enough that no one who appreciated women could deny her, until now that is, because she was dead.

Not my best opening line for a story, but it's what I can think off in a minute. Fits a noir storyline nicely. Maybe I can think of other things as well.

This is the story of my first kiss.

Here is another one.

People say that the best things in life are free, they lie.

One down. Several to go. :) See what I came up with for Gnorb's opening sentence: Funeral Party.

Don't tell me you're going to do every single one of them!? You are in a writing mood alright. :)

I plan to! I figure I might as well. I write absolute tons, anyway, so I might as well put it to something that'll be different every now and again. :)

Just read the entry, Leliathomas: it was awesome. Very dark.

(Side note: Would anyone who wrote first lines here mind much if I try the same thing? Linkage would most certainly ensue. This was an awesome idea, Lelia.)

Gnorb, you looking for more or were you planning on using the ones here?

You're more than welcome to work off what I posted above, I doubt you'd come up with the same idea anyway.

The ones here. Actually, I was thinking about the possibility of using them all in one story. And you're right: I, too, doubt I'd come up with the same idea anyway.

I'll release my one-liner under a creative commons attribution license.

Actually no, I was just being sardonic. Feel free to use it however you wish, I don't care about attribution.

Hey Gnorb. I'd be interested to find out what happens when the door opens, if it opens at all . . .

Feel free.

@Gnorb: where's Monkey?!

You may be about to find out.

For anyone that hasn't checked out Leliathomas's first short from this thread, do so. A very good read.
