I don't know about anyone else, but Gmail for the past month or more has been CONSTANTLY crashing firefox for me on numerous computers. Today has been especially bad. I wonder if it has something to do with their new colored labeling?
I'm so exasperated with gmail because I love it so much, but I'm considering to going back to good old thunderbird because I can't having stupid gmail taking out my whole browser every time I send and email or switch from inbox to archives or spam.

I've never had this problem and I use Gmail in Firefox pretty regularly. I'm on Windows XP is that makes a difference.

I'm on XP too. Happens on my laptop (dell), desktop (some off brand I got for cheap from tiger direct) and my dad's Gateway. Also happens to my ex when he uses his gmail at work.

Are you using addons, if so which ones are you using? Perhaps an addon is causing it to crash?

Certain FF addons do crash when used with GMail. I know of Firebug and Flashblocker but no doubt there are more.
I tried to do a quick search for a list but wasn't that successful, sorry.
That would mean, you'd have to read through all of the Mozilla documentation or switch them all off and try each one separately...
Or maybe some FF Ninja will come along here and just help you out. I'd definitely not be surprised, however, if that turned out to be the issue.

I agree, it's probably something unique to your system and not a general gmail problem. No complaints from my neck of the woods.

Hmm, the ones that are turned on are fasterfox, pagerank and the html tidy validator. :( My poor FF. :(

Are you using the latest version of FF (2.0.0.11)? I'd try disabling them and see if you experience the problem. If the problem goes away then you know it's an addon problem. Are you using the SearchStatus plugin for pagerank (has Alexa, Google and Compete) or the Google toolbar (or something else lol)?

I've been having the same problem. Bizarrely I use pretty much the same addons at home and at work yet it only crashes at work. It only started happening after they did the precaching thing for the messages.
For now I have gmail in html only mode (there's a link for this at the bottom of the page). It's a bit of a pain but really I shouldn't be using gmail at work anyway :)

I've been having some crash issues of late also, specifically after the "new UI" thingy. I'll try disabling my addons and see if that helps any.

Yeah, it's almost definitely an addon issue.
I recently tried out Firebug, a really cool addon for FF. However, I have a really strange problem. Gmail works fine, until I click on 'Spam', and then it just freezes up immediately.
The thing is, I have it disabled for Gmail, but it still happens.

Armen - that's exactly what I get. Spam is almost always the culprit (not exclusively though).

This has been happening to me since the 'new' version of gmail was rolled out. You can tell if you are using the new version if you see a 'Older Version' link in the upper right hand corner.
When this new version showed up, I got a message saying that it would work faster if I disabled FireBug for Gmail. I did this and that's when the hanging and crashing began. I re-enabled FireBug for Gmail and haven't had any problems since.
So, I really don't know what's happening with it, but that's how I got rid of the problem.

BinaryMoon - Yeah, the other one I've noticed, is when I click on an active email address, and a new tab opens up to compose an email to that address; it freezes then too.
ericwindham - Are you saying that if I enable Firebug on the Gmail site, there's a possibility (according to your experience) it'll stop freezing?

Glad I'm not the only one feeling the pain. I'm trying to switch from gmail for hosted domains to regular gmail to take advantage of the new gmail features but even when I try to search for email it instantly freezes up.
I only have HTML Tidy and Firebug installed as addons and disabled firefug at Gmail's request. I can't uninstall Firebug it's almost more necessary than Gmail.

Maybe I should have tried it first but actually enabling Firebug seems to have fixed the problem. Interestin...

It's HTML tidy causing the issue. I had this too. It's because of javascript in the new Gmail.
How you can fix it is once you are logged into Gmail, right click your HTML tidy icon in your browser and select 'disable for gmail' then your problem goes away.
Basically all you are doing is making it so that when you are on any page gmail page (gmail.google.com, etc.) HTML tidy is disabled.
Be sure that you only select 'disable for gmail' otherwise you will block HTML tidy working on everything.

Hello
This usually happens due to the Firebug Plugin which you may have activated. Check the tools - > Firbeug - > disable and restart Firefox. You should be ok after that ...
If it doesnt work still am sorry... but the probs with me was the firebug thing
