Is encryption too much hassle?

The UK government recently lost a couple of CD's containing data on 25 million citizens that was only protected by a password - you can imagine that a password isn't going to take much getting around - the data itself wasn't encrypted - most passwords on office documents don't take much circumventing - especially with the amount of power in PC's these days.
Do you have some form of hard disk encryption to make sure your data is safe should your computer be stolen or lost? Do you encrypt your emails or instant messenger conversations?
Is encryption too much hassle so you just take your chances?

I've thought about it from time to time, but just never really get around to it. I don't have anything that I'm particularly worried about though.
Why official data like that isn't encrypted is a good question. That's more than a little irresponsible.

I encrypt some things, sometimes, depending on the situations. Most of the time it seems like too much hassle and I end up not worrying. I do encrypt some IM conversations with one of my buddies who was okay with installing and configuring the special extension for Pidgin.
If I had 25 million people's personal data, I would definitely encrypt it.

hiya,
It really depends what i am doing. So for example.
I am talking to a client about their new site, (i'm a "web guy" ) and we may need to exchange something like flickr details or hosting account details.
I tend to go with how the client feels for the sending part (PGP encryption is not possible for some of them) but as soon as they are on my machine they are stored in an encrypted archive (using yojimbo)
When i have my client personal data, i make sure its encrypted i feel its my duty to.
however,
If i am talking with a friend about something personal use encryption, but that is VERY rare. normally we just use MSN or skype.
I think it is really bad the the uk govt. didn't even use basic levels of security with all that data. I hope they do now!
