After reading Paul Stamatiou's post on FriendFeed, I signed up to give the service a try. It's basically a large aggregator of many popular social sites and helps you keep track of what other people are up to online, like the home feed with Facebook. Thing is, I don't know anyone else who has a profile. :p

I'm curious to hear comparisons between FriendFeed and Jaiku. I'm on Jaiku but totally new to FriendFeed--and won't likely subscribe since it seems Jaiku serves the same purpose.
So much social webz.

So they made an entire website out of a small feature we've had on my9r profiles for a long time.... neat! :)

@Mike: 9rules aggregates a few things, but not the variety of sites FriendFeed does. There's more than Twitter, flickr and del.icio.us on the internet. ;)
@estarla: I can't say I've ever actually tried Jaiku, but the homepage doesn't exactly make me want to sign up. :p

Interesting, winnopeg, because I see Jaiku feeds in FriendFeed. And here I thought they were almost exactly the same thing. Now I'm thoroughly confused. :)

winnopeg: prove it! But seriously though, anything with an RSS feed can be dropped in, we have more tricks up our sleeve.

Shocking but true, my friendfeed profile can be found here: http://friendfeed.com/jark
... I was actually "working" on a similar application but have been too busy to finish it. I was interested in doing more than what friendfeed does. Might still take up the task if I can find some folks who are interested in working on the site.

Well, it went into public beta today.
My first reaction was "oh no, not another one" but I already like it and there's a lot I haven't discovered yet.
Not to toot my horn or pimp my wares, but for those unfamiliar with it, I just posted a rather exhaustive review.
But you can also just do a Google Blog search, because this thing is blazing.
Here's my FriendFeed stream.

These guys got $5M (basically their own money) for this stuff. You can do some cool things with it if you think ahead, but I don't see me using it. I don't follow my friends as it is.

I heard. I wonder how much "Google" there still is in there. They have a Blogger blog, which might be a coincidence, but which isn't regarded as a very "corporate" thing to do — unless you're Google anyways.
But like I said, I do like it so far.

Where do people come up with all this cash... I've been funding my own pet projects with a couple hundred bucks here and there and someone shells out $5Mill for a friend based aggregator? Shoot... slide some of that cash my way.

This is the direction I really hoped the whole social networking would take. Consolidation of a sorts, at the very least some better interaction.
It's staggering how many of those accounts I have now.

I agree with some folks above - $5MM seems like quite a lot. I do however see the benefit of the service after using it for a few weeks - its just very difficult to scan through so many followers and followees once you have a bunch.

Exactly, if the point is to make your life simpler consolidating the data isn't the answer because we will just add more and more people. The solution isn't technology, but how we limit ourselves in what we try to take in.

Perhaps we need an app that doesn't just group all the stuff but says something like: "Hey, it's been a while since you checked out x's Flickr stream but he just put up this pic now that got quite a few comments by some of your other contacts".
I know I need one of those.

Well wouldn't we still be overwhelmed because we can't check all hundreds of our contacts so you might get multiple messages a day to check out X because you haven't seen them in a while. We can always find a way to overwhelm ourselves no matter what the tech is.

Ha ha, I guess you're right about that. Sometimes you just need to yank out the plug and step back.

I've looked. I've nabbed the profile names that are pertinent to me (I just hate the thought of there being cas' and brightmeadow's that aren't me basically), but I can't see how FriendFeed is going to fit into my life.
I get the RSS feeds coming into one place but I have a feedreader to do that with the few people I don't mind getting overwhelmed with.
I get the commenting on things but... one more place to keep up with comments on? I'm with Scrivs on this one. I only have so much mental energy to throw around the web and I think this might be one service too much.
I of course reserve the right to take it all back when I fall in love with it in a few weeks time.
