I think it's a great thing, whether I'm personally going to use it or not. I know there are a lot of folks who have been clamoring for IMAP support in Gmail for a long time; their day has come.
I might give it a whirl, but probably not. If I downloaded the messages into a client, I'd just feel like I needed to organize them into folders - which, when I can just search at Gmail, would be a bit of a waste o'time. It's not lke the labels could easily be converted to folders, either - in most clients, a message can go in ONE folder. I've got 2 or 3 labels on some messages.
Anyroad - yeah, tis' a good thing for those who want it. I've personally been enjoying the recent speeding-up of the storage increase. Mine's gone up something like a gig and a half in a little over a week. Somebody at Google is really moving their butt, hurling hard drives out into the server farms.

I still don't have the feature, and I've also read that they have a new interface, but still just for a few accounts, mine is not involved yet...

I like it for how I could now technically check older emails at home in Mail without having to go online and log into Google...
Wait, that's not right. Truthfully, I've enabled it, but I don't see the point.
I'm online and logged into Google everywhere I go. So I always check my Gmail online and in-browser anyways. Why would I want to check email in a separate app?
Or am I missing the point?
Btw, how is this going to affect Google adverts? Will those now come inside the message? Or are they giving up on email ads?

Yeah, I think so. For me the point is twofold.
First, the IMAP allows me to use gmail on my phone a lot better. Before I had to use POP and that really sucked. Now with IMAP, everything is automatically synced and it's so nice.
Second, Google offers special services for educational institutions (where I work). This includes gmail for schools which has helped take the burden of providing email to thousands of people off the IT departments at schools. We maybe would have moved to this because it sounds like a pretty sweet deal, but the one caveat before, however, was that we still needed to provide IMAP email to all of the people who were used to using IMAP in their email clients. Now, this barrier has been lifted and it may be an option. Apply the same logic to companies who might actually pay for Google apps for their domain and it's a really good thing for Google.

this feature is great for those with limited internet connection because you can get the headers of your mail and it will all be syched with the webmail interface too.

I think it's great since now I can sync with my iPhone. I love the gmail web interface but when I am on the move it's great to know that messages will now be updated wherever I am. I only wish there was a better way to handle tags. The iPhone interface, handles tags like folders which defeats the purpose (deciding on only one tag). I am very happy that they have come out with IMAP support though!

It is working really great on my iPhone but through Mail.app I'm having some trouble. It is taking DAYS to sync. Ugh.

For me, it has ground to a holt on Mail.app. Fortunately I am only managing one account at the moment.

I've tried it out using Thunderbird (I usually just stick to using Gmail in the browser). It works flawlessly.

The lack of this feature is what kept me from checking my email as often as i'd like, so I'm quite happy.
