In your opinion what makes for a good URL? Brevity? Uniqueness? Catchy-ness?

What are some of your favorites? How did you pick your URL?

Succinctness and simplicity.

Well, I think there are different strokes for different folks but that happens to be how I chose mine, in addition to relevance. Mine has to do with a sort of pseudonym for my real name along with location. :)

It just has to be memorable because you can always just make up meaning behind it.

I'll agree with you there (although, I had to stare at the word succinctness for a few seconds, I'd never seen it written before). Relevance is certainly key. But I'm partial to unique URL's, the kind that just force you to remember them (but in the age of syndication and feed readers, just how important is that?). del.icio.us and somefoolwitha.com come to mind as falling into that category.

@Scrivs
I always felt a little disingenuous doing that. I've done it before, but for some reason I always end up feeling a bit like a poser.

But you're saying that just making something up is common? And more than that it's acceptable?

Haha. It does look weird. And after you said that, I had to look it up just to make sure it was a word.

Somefoolwitha.com is a great example, very clever. I just pick something that has personal meaning to me, keep it short as possible, and let the chips fall where they may, but I like Scrivs advice. Could be a bit contrived unless it's a clever url, and then who cares, because it's creative.

Impulse buying!

arcticpalace.org... after my college apartment's nickname.
peroty.com... because that's just me

random others which have since expired since their related projected never got off the ground.

Love the avatar peroty ;)

I sometimes get tripped up on the urls that have a creative spelling of one or more of the words. Sometimes it's too clever for me to remember the next day.

I picked my url because my first 15 choices were already taken. In retrospect, I'm glad most of the ones I wanted were taken.

It took me a year to get del.icio.us right.

... it took you over a year to get del.icio.us right?

Yes, I think del.icio.us is way too much work. A url should be a word you could guess at, knowing a little about the site, and have a pretty good chance of being right. Or else it should be so funny and clever and simple that you can't get it out of your mind.

^Thank you.

I think del.icio.us is ridiculous. Having to memorize where the periods were supposed to go was a big part of the reason I used it so rarely. I have enough crap to remember.

When I type "delicious" into Firefox it takes me there.
It knows what I want.
We have an understanding.

When i got my first domain name, i named it :

CyberSpell.net , back in 1995 I had this idea to start a web design service company with my brother (which never was implemented) or something to do with network solutions.

So, what do you people think of 'CyberSpell". and what do you think should be the tag line for it, as when i was about to get the domain name in 1995 and was thinking to use it for network solutions/webdesign I thought the tag line would be "Secure and Reliable".

But now, cyberspell is like a personal hobby of mine which i am still not updating regularly, so please help me in deciding a tag line and i will be greatful.

Mutahir

PS : Also, what do you think of this name : "The Web Itinerant" :)

Yeah, I see now that delicious.com redirects to del.icio.us.

So what's the point then? It must be some Web 2.0 antics that are over my head.

I buy some because they are catchy. Others I buy because they are keyword based and ccan be easily developed into a niche vertical or sold to someone who is seeking a keyword rich domain.

Just smile and nod.

Dots are the new not-dots.
And the lack of "E" is hip and cool.

Or maybe someone has patented E. That would not surprise me.

I don't think delicious.com was available to them back then. That's a ridiculously old domain (registered 1995) so they probably bought it after the fact.

And that's why I don't use the service - the domain name is too much work.

People will use whatever is given to them. Sites that are Typepad or WordPress do very well but they don't really have anything unique. Equal consideration should be given to similar sounding domains.

*haha just noticed peroty's avatar! *hugs

@mutahir: I would use a simpler word than itinerant

shockertour.com was probably the best domain I ever had. I was stationed in Korea, and it's tradition to name your tour of duty over there. We named ours ShockerTour, and the site was (by my standards) a galloping success for the year we were over there and then for about ten months after that. At one point we had over 100 members (again, success is relative in this sense) and our photo gallery (which was the main focus of the site) had around 80 contributors and over 5,000 pictures.

But, I was the sole administrator and when I deployed to Iraq there was a problem with our host... so it goes. I still have the domain, and it still pulls in some hits... but I had to try to recover it from a very outdated cache and lost a ton of data. I almost want to use the domain for something else, just because I like it so much, but I've just left up as many pictures as I could for nostalgia's sake.

@Tyme: Told you I was all in! LOL

I don't really use delicious because it's just so butt ugly. I'm trying to get into the habit of using something because I come across great links that I want to remember but I never can. So I've got the little "post to delicious" button on my toolbar so I don't have to type anything.

I believe that URLs are best when you can tell someone to visit your site verbally and they'll find it with no trouble.
So, if it is short but is something incoherent, then it wont help (eg. asd7s.info)
If it can be spelled in a variety of different forms, it won't help much either.

My URL is http://my.biotechlife.net
My Biotech Life on the Internet, pretty straight forward.

@Tyme : what do u think of CyberSpell ?

Thanks

If I had to do it again I'd make it as short as possible.

Er, have you ever tried writing a paper that includes the URL for del.icio.us? Over and over and over again? complete pain in the booty.

The problem with my domain name is that it is difficult for people who are hard of hearing to understand.

I didn't know what domain to buy when I first thought of hosting my WP blog myself. In the end, I settled for a conventional domain, which is also the initials of my name, http://chenpn.com so that if I ever have to use it as my website (which contains my resume and stuff like that), I can easily move my blog into a sub-domain.

Clever or not? :)

I thought about a good domain name for ages and just ended up with my name. I think it's always good to claim your own name but now I am thinking about moving my photography to a url and I can't think of a good domain name. It's hard to come up with something that you will still like in a few years. New domain name or use the photos subdomain I recently created to test some WP themes on my site. What to do what to do.

Make it relevant.

The shorter the better.

Avoid numbers if possible.
