What would you say is a must for any web 2.0 site?

A function.

Lot's of javascript dohickies that don't do a lot, cause most browsers to exhaust all available resources (ram, cpu, users patience) but *look* really cool. It must also be fluro coloured..

.. and you need a catch-phrase that doesn't actually mean anything.

You also have to ensure this all new "idea" runs on systems not designed for it, so it performs more slowly than glacial ice movement - ensure you have insufficient resources right when it matters most.

An API, the word Beta, Large fonts, Lots of white-space, at least one gradient or drop-shadow.

Optional things: tag clouds, glass effect on images.

Although I've been doing that for ages, so I wouldn't really call it Web 2.0 - a lot of others do, though.

ludicrous IPO value, $24Billion for a site that tells you your shirt is the wrong colour for the day of the week.

Wet floors, rounded corners, bright colour schemes, dropdown menus, little icons in the margins, AJAX, lots of AJAX, an r at the end of the name (Zooomr, Flickr), interest by Google/Yahoo ...

Oh, and of course users submitted content.

Actually - you know you have a genuine web 2.0 product when the nice men from Google send you a honking great big cheque (check) with a *large* number of zero's on it. ;)

Besides all of the usual visual aspects, to design a "true" Web 2.0 website you need to evolve your skills beyond design alone. Big fonts and gradients are not enough to make a good Web 2.0 website.

You need to pay more attention to your content. To the way that you present it, and to the way that it's written.

People expect Web 2.0 sites to be aesthetically pleasing and easy to browse/use. If you want to make a design statement, the Web 2.0 concept is not the correct one to use.

In short, and sorry if I'm repeating myself, Web 2.0 is not just a collection of visual elements. Each site is a different case, with a different message and a different audience. It's impossible to set one visual style to fit them all.

I'm confused. This appears to have started as a genuine, albeit ill-considered (a product/"application" is the only thing that makes a "Web 2.0 site"), question. But every single reply except Griffith's appears to be taking the question as a joke.

I think a lot of so called Web 2.0 sites are lacking usability. Sure, they have some cool stuff... but would my mom ever be able to figure it out? Heavens, No! Therefore, useless to a large majority of people. Example: (People are going to yell at me for this one...) I think the flickr thumbnail navigation is awful. And now I see it being duplicated everywhere!! And it is slowly working it's way to become the standard! yuck!

People must be saving usability issues for Web 2.1.

You mustn't forget the HUGE form fields...HUGE buttons...HUGE headline text...you get the picture.

Personally, the whole "web 2.0" design trend annoys me as a designer...just because it's trendy doesn't mean it's good design or appropriate design for a site. I look at some sites that have jumped on the web 2.0 bandwagon and think, "Stop trying to be cool and think about your audience."
