I'm curious... what makes something web 2.0? I've often heard people mention my Poetry with meaning "Web 2.0" yet it doesn't have an ounce of AJAX or Helvetica Nueve.

Go figure.

Well the typical definition includes AJAX, Sans Serif, badges, PHP or Ruby on Rails, etc.

Web 2.0 is really just survival of the fittest. Which sites make it, which sites don't. It's made of the web pages that everyone can view efficiently and easily, with good presentation and a well maintained and simple back end.

Web 2.0 seems to describe the second wave of startups (and some really successful ones at that) and new technologies after the first wave, which ended with the dotcom crash.

Interactivity. People think it's about the flashy AJAX and rounded corners. It's about the dictation of how the site flows depending on the readers or the viewers. Interactivity that builds the site, creates it, gives it meaning beyond the control of the owner.

Speaking of Helvetica...check this out

Web 2.0 can mean anything :D

As Wisheng has said, Web 2.0 is the second wave of start-ups with new technologies that enhance the way applications are built. You can expect to see things like Ajax, Microformats, Web Service API's, syndication, collaboration, and so on in a Web 2.0 product, but to put simple, I like to look at is as just, "improvement." The average person though that is aware of Web 2.0 feels it's all about the big fonts, ruby on rails, and Ajax - that's just part of the pie ;-)

I'm loving this era of Web 2.0! I'm discovering cool new web applications to use nearly every other day. It hasn't been like this since the dotcom boom, there's a lot of creativity flowing everywhere in the tech industry right now. Hope it's not a bubble destined to burst though, I'm sure everyone, investors included, is a little more careful with cash these days.

I always thought Web 2.0 was sites allowing users to interact directly on them. In Web 1.0 you had sites that did things, but there wasn't any interaction. With Web 2.0 you get to guide the direction of a website.

I'm with Scrivs. Web 2.0 is all about creating an experience rather than just a website. Social aspects, good design, clean code, and web applications all just help play a part in that.

Have you heard, Web 2.1 is coming out later in the week, so be sure to upgrade :)

Talking in the first person. Until the whole 2.0 era webpages were merely written not spoken. If that makes any kind of sense.

Who cares? :) Well, I mean, we all care a little maybe. But does calling poo "Poo 2.0" make it more appetizing? Maybe -- but it's still poo. Shouldn't the focus be on prettiness and great content, not an integer?

Web 2.0 is not about AJAX. Web 2.0 is about communities.

The Web earlier (also termed Web 1.0) was a purely static web. Static in the sense, that it only allowed you to read content posted by Webmasters. There was no way you could have a discussion on the contents posted. It was a finality that you had to accept.

With the advent of Blogs and networks, people began to build communities - a community being defined as a group of people with a common aim and a common interest.

Web 2.0 is not a result. It's a process.

The static finality of the Web 1.0 meant that no conversations could happen on the Internet. You either had to have your own site, or you had to somehow contact the owner of the content and convey your views to him. Then too, it would be a one-to-one conversation.

Now, as Internet reaches the far-flung areas of the globe, more and more people discover newer ideas and participate in a conversation that is open to all.

Thus, conversation becomes a process and not a result of your opinions.

Web 2.0 is not about YOU and ME. Web 2.0 is about US.

A conversation involving ten different people in ten different parts of the world happens in a server hosted in a location unknown to all ten. How? Web 2.0 is the answer.

Simply put:

Think of Web 2.0 as the next generation of the Web. The first generation could only speak. This generation of the Web can hear as well.

It is up to us to use both these faculties and hold a meaningful conversation.
