Oh great 'powers that be', 9rules team, could you let me know if one of my Notes was deleted? And why? Or, perhaps I am missing where it went?
I posted a Note "begging" for points for the fun of it last night before going to bed, and now it is gone. (Not before getting a few points thrown my way, thanks everyone!).
Just wondering what the policy was for deleting notes and, if it happens again, if I could get a my.9r message explaining why. Thanks in advance!

Begging for points is frowned upon.
(Feel free to gift me some points for such a helpful response.)

Cause it was lame... begging for points? How is that valuable to anyone? We normally send my.9r messages if topics are deleted but we figured our reasons would be obvious in this case. TOS has always been located at that link and allows us to delete threads we feel contain no value at all. Things like 1-word sentences posted to notes are included and this fell into that.

Points are easy to get, all you have to do is participate. It was almost insulting to everyone else who participates on the site to drop in every once in a while and because you wanted some extra point to go and beg for the points that others have earned. People are more than willing to dish out points, Oli is a great example of this, but they do so after seeing participation.
I didn't like the idea of having everyone jumping up and down begging for points so I deleted the note. I should delete this one as well since you could have just PM'ed one of us, but I will leave it up.

But a post entitled "fuck bush" with no real content within it note is ok?

Let's not forget the 'How Many Push Ups" or "Favorite Pizza Toppings" threads.
Colin, I didn't have many points left but I sent you all that I had. Enjoy them.
It's great that you guys have taken 9rules in a new direction that will increase the value of the site but it's unfortunate that the network is no longer about quality. You can tout quality all you want but it's gone down.
I also think the recent 'exodus' of members probably has less to do with the new terms and more to do with how the network no longer represents a collection of fine and unique sites. Some of the attitude and bravado has pushed some of us away as well.
I've sent Tyme 2 emails over the past 3 weeks requesting that I be removed from the network. She's never bothered to reply but posts in notes so this is one thread in particular where I feel certain that Scrivs, Mike, or Tyme will see my request.

shade... there IS content there, but that content arose out of discussion.
The idea of deleting it WAS tossed around but actual discussion popped up before they could hit the button.

Mango, that's what everyone has been telling me, very rarely do they mention the new TOS.

Right On dude, you're a great guy but I don't agree. The note should have ended the moment it was posted. You can get good content out of any note, as long as there is a tangent started. I'm sure there could have been good content about begging from this note.

Again I deleted it for my reasoning above, didn't even think of TOS. Let it be just that.
@Mango: That's a tired discussion man. And people that have been around since day 1 know my attitude and bravado has been there. I mean look at me? Wouldn't you walk around with bravado with a face this cute?

shade... I was one of the ones who reported the note but by the time I got a response there was a discussion going so I dug in.
Some discussions get started from stupid crap, and right now Scrivs/Mike/Tyme are the only ones with "powers" so it's pretty difficult to catch everything before people go off on a tangent.

And tangents do tend to run wild here. You never know where you may end up at the end of a note. Usually it's completely different from where it started and plotting the course of interesting. :)

@shade: I didn't like the idea of the note and what it promoted. I don't mind the other ones. We don't always agree internally why something gets deleted but we respect why one of us would do it. We ask that you do the same. It's not easy keeping up the non-existent quality that exists within 9rules.

I never received them so I'm not sure where you sent them. One thing I always do is respond to email. But I'm not going to say anymore because I'm pissed off at the implication that I would purposely ignore someone. It goes against who I am and what I stand for.
Colin: The idea behind points is that they are earned not begged for. Just like friends - remember that note you started? I'm not being mean but can't you do get friends and points like everyone else? Did you say you were joking? Did you think about how many people might think that would be ok then start begging for points too? Did you think about how, if that happened, that would effect the community?
I'm serious - cause aren't you a community something or other at Viddler? Aren't those things you consider?

No implication at all Tyme so I'm not sure what there is to be pissed about. I sent emails to your 9rules address and never heard back. What else can I assume other than you didn't care to reply. To be honest, I figured that you were irritated that yet another member wanted out. It's not like I was going to try and track you down via your personal site since this was 9rules business.
As far as the points go, you've created this virtual currency so you have to understand that people will beg, borrow, or barter just as they would if it had any real value.

It's the airing of your assumptions in public that tends to garner the ire of the Triad.
There's a messaging feature in your profile and Mike, Tyme and Scrivs are reachable by all from there.

You're missing the point... Usually, if someone shoots off an email and doesn't hear back, the normal step from there would be to send them a Private Message from within the system, not jumping in a note to question them.

So irritated that I left your site displaying in 9rules (that makes no sense) and didn't care to reply. I get it. You could have sent an email to Scrivs or Mike, you could have sent me a PM, you could have made a note in the member's forum which you still had access to because I never removed you because I never got it and the leaf was still showing by your name...you opted to do it here. Your decision.
And for the record, I responded to each one. I wished them well. When I said no hard feelings, I meant it.
@RightOn - thanks...my point exactly.

Nope, I didn't miss any point RightOn but thanks for assuming I did.
I sent a couple of emails over several weeks. I chose email as my method of correspondence because I will most likely receive verification should the attempt fail to be recceived while a PM offers me none of that feedback.
I'm not pissed nor am I trying to create any drama here. I wanted out and saw a thread where both Mike and Scrivs were active so I took the oppoortunity to comment on the thread and add my request.
Let's not make this into anything more than what it is.

I also had a note some time ago where i was kind of begging for points, it was deleted, that's fair.
About my Fuck Bush note, honestly i posted it just because, i should have known it would be trouble. I respect the 9r guys for not deleting it, maybe they would delete now if it was reposted, but deleting it as it is now serves no more purpose than leaving it up with everyones replies.
Anyway Colin, get off your ass and earn some points man, ill follow if you do ;)

Yes, I was the first to respond. I don't remember what decision Bush made but there were a hell of a lot of people thinking exactly the same thing that day. That week our front page was filled with it because people were expressing their frustration with Bush. It was kind of silly to delete a note when we had member entries saying the exact same thing on their blogs at the time (at the time members could have asides in their main feed and that would display on 9rules, which is not the case now).
Nick, you picked a bad example (I get what you were trying to do), especially since the note almost immediately turned relevant. I posted the first response to give people a place to express themselves on my.9r that day. May as well leave that note open and have everyone in that one than have a bunch of them like iPhone day. We tried to get everyone into one note iPhone day and deleted dups and got flack for that.
Colin's note was different. How would you guys like it if users started begging for points? If Dale's saw notes go on your nerves then I'd guess people, especially new people, begging for points/friends would too.

Mike, Paul, Tyme: Thanks for responding. Truth be told I never read the TOS so I didn't know (but should have expected) that begging was frowned upon.
Thanks to everyone else for engaging in this discussion.
As a way to repay, I'm going to send every single person in here a point. Thanks!

I agree. There's a new influx of notes users, and the topics that get to the top of the notes page just aren't worth it anymore. C'mon: pizza toppings? Favourite item in your house?! I try to bump up notes with quality, like the Feminism one, but all that happens is that it gets Buried (sorry for the Digg reference here) under the madding crowd of lower quality, easy to respond to notes.
Urgh.
I'm forced to dig deeper into 9rules to get the content I want, or am forced to watch the streams of my.9r participants whom I know produce good stuff. But it's frustrating - I used to hit 'notes' and get a whole list of great discussions.
I see I'm not the only one (mildly) annoyed:
Triad: is there any thing we can do about this?

We could remove 13,000 people and just leave maybe 10 people to discuss the issues you find important. Sorry it's been like this since day 1. There are some really intellectual notes that people get into and there are general topic ones that people get into. If you look at them from a Main notes page perspective maybe they do get pushed down (which is odd when it is being said "not much going on in notes lately"), but if you like a specific community check out that Notes page and you should be fine.

I'm with Scrivs on that one... there are a handful of people on here that I REALLY don't get along with, but that doesn't mean their voice needs to be silenced. I've seen them provide VERY sound advice and good opinions, as well as bad.
It's a community, 100% of us will never agree with each other ALL the time.

That there isn't much going on in Notes is true for some but probably not true for many others.
For me it is.
I think it really depends on what your expectations are (or were, especially if you were/are a member that's been around for a longer while).
There's been a major shift in emphasis around here and it just doesn't excite some people as much (anymore) who were around here originally when things started to take off.
Let's take me for example. I was attracted to this site by its original concept and its emphasis on highlighting blog posts from around the Net plus keeping a solid community (members only) and I stayed around for quite a while. When I left, it had nothing to with any changes around here.
But since I left, 9rules has basically turned into a site of a kind I'm already a member of elsewhere ... a forum. NO, I hear the naysayers state, it's not the same, but to me it is. A lot of the notes mirror what goes on in a popular forum (I'm a member of 7 of those), usually in the "offtopic/miscellaneous" forums. The members' content has been pushed back somewhat and Notes and Clips got the spotlight. That is a definite shift in emphasis.
I still stand by what I've said before: 9rules had to change and adapt to keep ahead of the competition (and to not go stale) but people like myself don't find much here (anymore) that they aren't getting in other places as well.
So, where does that leave me?
I drop by here once a day, sometimes once a week, check out what's new, read it ... and move on.
Other people joined the game later and found a thriving community with the shifted emphasis and stayed around because it was/is just their thing. I probably would have as well at some point, but I'm quite settled in the places I'm a member of already and - again, for me only - 9rules doesn't have that incentive to become more active. I'd have to split my time and committment taking away from other places I frequent, and that would be silly (and rather pointless). Why post one discussion here, another one there and a third one in another place?
Although I'm rambling here again, what really happened was a generation change (of larger proportions ... call it housecleaning if you like) and I think it's done 9rules quite a lot of good.
I do believe that the blog network/aggregation thing is as dead as a doornail and 9rules has a "new"/"continued" life-cycle ahead that's going to bring forth quite a lot more good stuff that's basically already built into the design (Mike: I'm delighted with the expandability that's built in here, under the hood! Great job!).
In short: I like it, but it's just not my kind of thing anymore.
I think that whole exodus discussion should have emphasized that point a bit more overall: instead of lamenting things that have gone the way of the world and complaining that things have changed (too much for some members' liking), more people should have just stated that it's a new beast which didn't fit them anymore. Happens all the time. Unfortunately, many posts I read seemed to accuse the leadership of "ruining a good thing." I personally think it is the wrong stance to have.
We all move on, adapt, change our ways and head in new directions.
So, why shouldn't a site like 9rules be allowed to?
Kudos to them for having the balls to pull it off, despite some probably quite fierce opposition (and statements bordering on personal insults).
Cheers!

Thanks to everyone that replied to this thread and kept it very civil. I have the highest faith in the my.9r community that these Notes really are valuable and that the system that the 9rules team has put together can be a great place for all of us to discuss topics like this.
I really do appreciate it. Thanks.
