I changed the layout late last night to switch to a centered layout instead of left-aligned, and I think it opens up the site more. I've tried to do left-aligned sites in the past (and in the beginning stages of Chawlk) but I always switch to centered because it just looks better I think. Also, Paul made me do it.
I'll be changing the diagonal backgrounds soon as well, I need something a bit less... cliché and 2006 if you know what I mean. I was thinking of a really big abstract image stuck at the top -- light in color -- so does anyone have any suggestions?

Did you also anchor the points tag to the bottom right? I was on last night and refreshed to see my points tag thing wasn't where it was 5 min ago and I thought to myself "Man, I need to go to bed I'm seeing things!"

He was right, as well! ;) Personally I prefer centred layouts, but your left-aligned version didn't look as annoying as others. Maybe it was the colour scheme or layout of other containers, I don't know but it didn't seem as annoying. Credit to you for trying though.

I never seem to like layouts that are "squinched to the left" as my mother says. It's not that they're horrible, just that centered looks better on most things I've seen.

RightOn, with the centered layout, that points position was the only one I could think of that wouldn't really be intrusive. It's on the right cause the left column is usually the important one, and it's on the bottom so it's not covering much stuff up once you scroll past the top navigation areas. I thought about the positioning for about 20 minutes last night and this is my best effort at it :)

He is drunk because it is his birthday, but this is not his best effort. We are just settling with it for the short moment.

I like it being in the corner, I just got used to seeing it further up so I thought I was going crazy at first when I refreshed and it moved.

Finally. Chawlk looks so much better now. I have no qualms with where you stick the points at the moment, Mike, you just enjoy your birthday (and, of course, any hangovers forthwith).

Haha shadowsun7 you kill me. All we did was center the layout and that was the deciding factor in it looking good for you? Too easy to please.

Hehe. Don't push it, Scrivs. I might just start arguing for it to be aligned right next. ;P
PS: Really though, I can only say if it's better or worse. My next gripe is the boring striped background, but Mike has already said he was going to change that, so I've no complaint. Yet.

We are trying to create a a design that appeals to most and not just the design oriented though so "boring" might be what you get with the background for this one. The mainstream world is calling us and it's time to break out soon.

you should do like 50 million background patterns and let us set it in our Options... hehe
Ok now I'm just making up work for Mike... he said he loved coding so why not!? :P

ROTFLOL!
I get where you're coming from Scrivs. And frankly I'll be happy with whatever Mike comes up with, because it's the community that matters, not the design. Plus: Mike has never failed to impressed me, so I'm pretty sure he'll get bored with the way Chawlk looks (once the site splitting is done) and blow us away.
