Earlier today if you were lucky you might have caught a Note posted by Shadowsun7 where he found a new site we are working on. Here is what it said with some edits.
Title: Holy Shit C*****!
Body: Is it me or does C***** actually look BETTER than my.9r notes?
Ali 3 is going to end the world and bring back Jesus and end all wars. Oh I can't wait.
*nudges Triad: is there an Ali 3?*
We killed the Note quickly because internally we never thought anyone would come across the site so we never had a plan of action. However, this got us to thinking...what if we developed the site live? We are used to doing things in secret and then just springing it on you, but what if there were no surprises because you saw everything as it was being developed? Almost a case study of how we develop our sites, only in live form.
Now there are some negatives to this. You will see pages unfinished and working with a site that isn't fully functional. That can be a bit frustrating, but once you see it you will understand you have other alternatives. So although we have become jaded to the term "beta" this would be beta in the actual sense of the world. Hell, right now you might as well call it Alpha.
What this also does is basically show you our hand for a couple of different sites, including the future of 9rules.
The positives though are we can all learn from the experience. Maybe it will prevent us from developing features that aren't needed. Maybe it will generate more discussions around the web. Who knows.
If you could really care less then let it be known. If it's something you think would be interesting then let us know.

Well, let's look at it this way...
For as long as I've known you online, your whole thing has been the public design / redesign without putting too much concern into your audience feedback during the process (by way of your carrying on with it, not being hampered by it)
You've already thrown down the challenge that you and your team can design the same idea better than anyone
and
you've already acknowledged that there's really nothing new under the sun in the web world
Given all that, the answer seems to be pretty clear to me.

I think you should write my biography.

I'm interesting for sure, but I think I let that be known in the first drink cast lol.

I think Shadowsun7 should get 1000 points for finding it. :)

You are more than welcome to give it to him, doesn't mean we'll show you anything.

I think live design has the upside that A. it'll quench the curiosity that you just heated to boiling point by mentioning Eli's discovery, and B. you guys could end up with a better site by getting constant feedback (many of the 9r legion are pro designers, and all of us quasi-pro critics).
Thumbs up.

Heh, well we'll look for feedback, but the one negative is too much design feedback that prevents us from moving forward especially since everyone has their favorite colors and everything else.

Awkward......I meant I'm interested.

Mine is royal blue. I hope you take that into serious consideration moving forward.
I kid.

Wow, I think you might be happy as hell then. I'm not kidding. Ugh.

@Scrivs
Isn't that essentially the same as what happens after a conventional launch of a new design? A flood of feature requests and complaints (and praise)? Show it under the terms that you're open for suggestions, but can't and won't implement every single one.

Right on. You three run this show, most of the regulars appreciate that. We don't expect our whims to be catered to.

Yeah those guidelines will be laid out. It should be interesting and I guess we will move forward with it since a couple of you have spoken up.

Edit:
Cool.

I just thought of a potential downside (depending on how much you plan to reveal): Could there be some security risks involved ie. pages blurting out accidental SQL or something of the likes?

Not really because you would have to know some of the files for that to happen. You'll understand better once you see it.

I'm interested and interesting ... but mostly interested. Thanks in advance for developing this live. ;)

I'm starting to regret finding this.
Scrivs, I'd rather you guys not do this live. A good part of being in 9rules is the anticipation for the redesign, the new features, etc etc. It's like Apple: total silence for a quarter and then BAM! Macworld. I really enjoyed the Ali 2 launch: the twitters and the podcasts and the constant reloads (and Rich's reappearance): it was fantastic. A party. Anybody listening in would have thought me crazy - I was whooping at a computer screen.
I'll miss that. The ponies especially. And I bet there'll be a drinkcast when Ali 3 comes around.
No surprise if we see the redesign live.

One person on AIM told me something similar. He said that when we launch something, even though he's not a geek, he hears about it. Then he comes to the site and the "Oh DAYUM, Mike outdid himself AGAIN!!!" feeling when he sees the design. Then telling his friends to check it out. Yeah, now that we're doing drinkcasts wouldn't it be cool to do a drinkcast of the launch? We did a podcast once where we recorded the stuff when it went down live but this would BE live. Watching us, watching the site go live, once it does, pull out the drinks and have a real party.
It's not the same if you've already seen it, is it? Or would it be to you guys?
Ya'll are bloggers, designers, programmers, etc. so you know the score on building a site. Most of the changes are under the hood: "we added notifications", "the report button works", "new logo up", "moved a box over 10px because it was irritating me", "ToS up"...seriously, does that interest you?
I told Scrivs to go with his gut (I support you on that) and he's asking you guys but I'd like to know we're (The Triad and what you guys are saying) on the same page:
How many of you actually want to watch the site being built vs. you're curious as to what it could be and you want to see it?

I'm interested in watching the site being built.
because I think it's a new and fresh idea (I don't think I've heard of a site of this caliber doing live revisions, have you?), and because this point of Scrivs' interests me: "Maybe it will generate more discussions around the web." along with a few other points that intrigue me.
But I don't know how far along you guys are -- is it really true what you say about all there being left being minor tweaks (ToS, report button, etc) - or are we talking about a period of development where something completely new will occasionally pop up?
If it's the latter, I'd say that it'd be a very interesting experiment. But if it's just minor tweaks; then keep it in the box.

I think what you'll see will be similar to ali2 launch. People will be excited, it just won't be quite as much to digest at once (or maybe it will!) The difference will be people will keep coming back to see what's knew... probably long after you're done adding features.
I know I'm an OCD reloader myself. Your servers have good insurance from melting, right?

I don't really have a preference either way. I wouldn't mind having a look at what's cooking, but I can also wait until the entire meal is done; whichever.

I'm with Josh on this one. It would be nice to see what's going on now, but that's just the impatient side of me. I'd could wait because the anticipation part of it is pretty fun, and you guys seem to always live up to the hype so it's normally worth the wait.
Are we talking about a huge project here or something, because others have mentioned Ali2 and whatnot, and that was pretty big obviously.

Everyone is bringing up some good points and the majority of the only confirm why I would want to show you guys early and get you in on the ground floor instead of waiting.
@shadowsun7: In all honesty this idea was in my head long before you found out about the site my friend. I can't say it was in Tyme's or Mike's, but on ExpertIdiot you can see me preluding to something new because I wanted to transition into talking about it.

Oh!
Didn't realize that. We-ell, the idea's been bounced around a bit, and I'm satisfied that we've got people for and against. So I suppose I'm with Tyme on this one: you choose whatever you feel is right, Scrivs, and we'll support you, and we'll go from there.
Personally I would prefer a launch, so that rules out the second question. And as for the first ... well I'm not a designer so I'll probably learn more from this experience than I can offer, so ... yeah. Watching the site being built would be a real kickass way of learning design.

I've read through this twice now. I'm looking for a link. I checked bringontheponiesalready.com but that's not it.
That said, I support a launch. Doing whatever it is live may sound exciting and bold, but somehow it just sounds like a bad idea. Dunno why. I just get these feelings sometimes :)
We'll see what you decide.
