This thought came to me in the Voltron Note, but occassionally when I am hanging around people my age 25-28, out of no where a discussion of 80s cartoons will come up and it got me thinking that this was truly the Golden Era for cartoons. Think about it, if you were born in the late 70's, early 80's how many great cartoons could you name right now?
- G.I. Joe
- Transformers
- Voltron
- Thundercats
- Gobots
- Smurfs (yeah, it was good, admit it)
- The Snorks
- Any cartoon showing on USA Cartoon Express
I know I am missing a ton so maybe you could help me out and fill in the blanks. Basically this is the only part of the 80's that I miss.
Also for you anime fans, I'm sure you can pop off some of the greatest animes of all-time coming from this decade, namely Akira.

G.I. Joe might be one of my favorite cartoons of all-time, next to Ninja Turtles, although I think Ninja Turtles was early 90s?
I haven't seen a ton of anime flicks, but my favorites would have to be Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D.

I'm a child of the early 70's, so I remember quite a few but you already named some of the classics but how about:
Transformers and Voltron were two of my favorites for sure.

Griffin, if you have access to cable TV, VH1 does a ton of 80's shows about remembering this or that with clips and sometimes full shows.
It's totally for sure, like gag me with a spoon radically tubular. Word to your mother.

seanrox, I didn't know this, thanks. I'll have to check this out. I honestly have never watched VH1 but if they're giving the 80's love I'll shower some of mine on 'em. Thanks again.

No problem Griffin. VH1 has all kinds of year themed shows... things like "I love the 70's" and also the "I love the 80's".
They cover things from TV shows to music, hair styles and more.
It's really cool and to think I've lived through the 70's, 80's, 90's and now into the 2000's... I've seen a lot of crazy things... and I'm only in my early 30's.

karmatosed: Scooby Doo was pretty funny I thought.
Almost every episode ended up with the old carnival operator being the villain or ghost.
I'll never forget the famous line "I would have gotten away with it too if it wasn't for those darn kids". hehe.
I've never heard of Mr Ben. What is it about?
Side note, I love the name of your site. Very creative.

Ooops, replied in the Voltron Note before I read this. Let's see if I can still remember.
Spiral Zone
Jacye and the Wheel Warriors
Pirates of Dark Water
Robotix
M.A.S.K (not the green faced one, the one with all the cool transformable toys)
Visionaries
Inhumaniods (they were cool)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (how can anyone forget this?!)
Gobots
Transformers
G.I Joe
Thundercats
Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years (also an anime)
Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers
Gee...I think I forgot more than I actually watched.

He-Man and She-Ra were awesome. I have their movie where they first meet up. A bunch of their series episodes came out on DVD recently... but i mustn't. Saving for BattleStar Galactica DVDs.
Granted I was only born in 85 but when I was growing up the video store had so many of the titles mentioned here (and TV was still playing others) well into the nineties that I remember them all quite well and love them.

@Kamigoroshi: Pirates of Dark Water was a 90's show. But, you can swap that out with Silverhawks ;)

Kamigoroshi: "Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years". That one sounds really familiar but I can't picture it. Time to do some searching around.
Cyrris: He-Man... hehe... I remember that one for sure. VH1 was actually making fun of He-Man on one of their "remember the 80's" shows. Something about He-Man being into boys or something to that effect but of course when we were kids, it never came to mind, at least not for me but after watching the VH1 show, I was like "yeah, he-man was into boys for sure".

Joshualane: It was? Oh well...I was young, but I'll swap that out with Silverhawks anyway. I can't believe I missed that one. :)
Sean: That was one of the americanized animes like Robotech. Though...I forgot what it was for. I do remember how they used to end it with their narrative booming voice "That's next on Captain Harlock...and the Queen of a Thousand Years!!"

I'm a huge fan of 80's cartoons. I watched a lot of them but my favorites by far were He Man, Thundercats, Transformers, Care Bears, Chip and Dale, Danger Mouse, Gummi Bears, Duck Tales, Ghostbusters, GI Joe, Inspector Gadget, The Jetsons, Pound Puppies, Smurfs, Space Ghost, Super Mario Bros. (while it lasted), and Voltron. I watched a lot of tv when I was a kid...and I'm probably forgetting some too.

I know this isn't a cartoon, but what about "Fraggle Rock"? That show was sooooo good and kids born in this century can't understand the goodness of the Fraggles. All the shows that I watched when I was little don't really exist like "The Care Bears". I remember it was like Disney or ABC had some afternoon programming of cartoons like "Tale Spin" and that one with Donald Duck. "Ducktales"?

What's great is most of these shows are already out on DVD or are coming soon.
The only one I don't see so far is the original X-men cartoon that aired on Fox Saturday mornings (early 90s, cheating I know). That one was awsome. I don't like the new one(s).

Does anyone remember Starblazers or Force Five?
I couldn't miss an episode of Starblazers because there was only a year to save the Earth! Great cartoon, I have to have the DVD sets.
Force Five had Gai-King on Fridays. There were other robots but the names are long forgotten.

I remember a cartoon from about the mid 80s, i think it was called Wowza. A big white fury dog who lived with a professor. I've done a search on that name and come up with nothing, any ideas?

It's funny: I used to love stuff like "Thundercats" and "Silverhawk" when I was a kid. Recently I watched an episode of both and thought to myself "Wow... so this is what my parents saw mne go ga-ga over?" I felt pretty embarassed right about then.
I guess as you get older it becomes harder and harder to suspend disbelief. Then again, I now like crappy science fiction (as in "unintentionally funny sci-fi), so there's the long-lasting effect of these cartoons on my psyche.
Interestingly, my wife still loves "He-Man" and "She-Ra", as well as "Thundercats," which is why I'll eventually end up buying her those half-hour long Matel commercials on DVD.
That aside, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, G.I. Joe, Star Trek pretty much shaped my childhood, at least after I moved to the US. Before then it was He-Man, Transformers, and Woody Woodpecker, which really wasn't an 80's cartoon, I guess, but since I was a kid during the 80's -- and as everyone knows, history started when I was born -- to me it counts.

I am so incredibly nostalgic just thinking about this... when I was a little girl, my parents didn't let me watch much television, so I always saved up my allotted weekly hours for Saturday mornings. I woke up, walked downstairs, got some Cinnamon Life cereal, and planted my butt in front of the TV to watch my favorite cartoons (live and on video tapes, which I still have!). Scrivs, you are right: the 80's were the golden age of cartoons!
So here are my favorites:
Sigh... the memories!

I don't know if this thread would be dead now, but seeing as feb 11th was the last post, maybe I will give this a shot.
I saw this as a kid, years ago, but it was only for a brief period. I am not sure if this was a dubbed from a French cartoon, but I remember it was a cartoon in the G.I.Joe/Voltron genre (boys running around shooting sh*t, recurring villain week after week) but the villain had these domes? which turn people into walking zombies and the good guys ride around in these motorcycles. One in particular is edged into my brain, the captain rides in a wheelie motorcycle. Does this remind anyone of a cartoon they used to watch? I have been trying to find it.
