That Golden Harddrive box looks fantastic. Love the ripples.

@Alan
You have to use < strong > instead of < b >! :)

I have a question: is there any advantage to getting a hdd with external enclosure over buying a simple external hdd?

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I ended up getting a Vantec NexStar 3.

I've used it for a few days so far, and it's pretty sweet. It's got a very solid feel to it and comes with an eSATA port. Though a bit on the pricey side of enclosures, I highly recommend it.

This Icy Dock is aluminum. I have a Firewire model I use for backup on my MacPro. There is also a black one for a few dollars more.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I love my enclosure.

Hahahahahh...holy crap, that's a sweet drive, although I can't figure out why it's got that funny ripple effect on the top. Doesn't really seem to fit in with the rest of the design.

That Iomega is pretty sweet. I'll have to look into whether my vendor can get their hands on one for me.

Thanks!

Daang that Golden Harddrive is some serious bling.

I have an Iomega 160GB portable harddrive. It's aluminum, looks pretty nice, and is a little bigger than the size of two man hands in a praying pose. I don't know if that's what you were looking for though... my description was a little less than specific.

There are plenty of generic (non major brand, at least) aluminium enclosures around.

Newegg, for rough example, have 299 ALU 3.5" models.

Can someone recommend a portable, external hard drive enclosure that isn't plastic? I'm looking for a SATA, for 3.5" drive, and all the enclosures I've seen are made of cheap plastic.
