Has anyone out here not had an excersize program for a very long time, and then got into one?

If so, what did you do to start up a regime, and stick with it?

I ask, because, well, it's been a long time for me, and in some ways, I'm starting to feel the effects of it, or lack thereof.

Hey Trevor. I just started going to the gym again - this is my 4th day, and so far so good. It's pretty much been on and off for me, but this time I really do plan on keeping a steady pace and develop myself physically and mentally.

I am particularly interested MMA (mixed martial arts) and I'm developing a personalized a plan of workouts and exercises to have my body conditioned for it. I don't plan on competing anytime soon, but I do practice Jiu Jitsu a bit.

For a few months, I've had a pretty steady regime and stopped only due to other complications in life at that time. I find it the best if you had a friend you could work out with. You two can serve as motivational source for each other and achieve satisfying results just as I have.

You know, I heard that once you maintain something like this for a month, it becomes a natural thing and not a hassle to do anymore. It's just something that you do, and not have to "force" yourself to do it. I did start going back to the gym because I noticed myself slipping out of shape, and that I was paying for a gym membership (contracted) that I wasn't attending to! So....yea. :)

I just got back into going to the gym again after a few month hiatus and I'm more serious about it this time. I mainly lift but occasionally do some cardio, though not as often as I probably should do it. I can bench more now than I could when I was in better shape a few years ago so I'm proud of that. Up to about 85% of my weight, hopefully I'll be benching my weight in the 3-4 weeks as I get stronger and lose a little weight.

GoJu Karate.

I wrecked my heal playing footy and hadn't exercised in 3 years. I finally went back to Karate and boom! I have lost a stone in weight a look and feel much better.

The secret for me is that at a real class the instructor pushes you further than you can push yourself. This goes double at GoJu, which is very hardcore.

I could never make the gym last long enough; its too antisocial and depressing. Karate is fun, I have made some nice friends and I am achieving catharsis by working my stress out in a healthy way. Not to mention I am reforging my relationship with my body.

Basho

I've been switching between the whole exercise/no exercise thing for ages now, till health issues 6 months ago finally gave me the kick up the arse I needed to get started. And, more importantly I've kept going! My tips would be start small and start simple. There's no point in going full pelt into a five-session-a-week programme from nothing. You're just going to get demoralised, exhausted and not going to stick to it. Start with fitting a 30 minute slot into your schedule three times a week where you do something. That could be go down the gym, walk the dog, walk round the block, anything. Just fit it into your day and make it a regular thing. When you've got used to a fixed pattern, start switching in more intensive exercise, extending the periods you exercise for, and maybe increasing the number of days you exercise a week.

It takes about three weeks for a new routine to fit in and start to feel natural - stick it out for that long, and you should keep to it.

My other suggestion is find someone to start exercising with you. If you've got someone else to guilt you into exercising when you're not feeling like it (and vice versa), you're more likely to stick to the plan. You can also get the whole competitive thing going on (who looses most, quickest for example).

My last pearl of wisdom before I go do the housework my other half is now yelling at me to do, is that exercise on it's own probably isn't enough. You need to start thinking about a whole healthy lifestyle. Boring I know, but it really does work!

Good luck :)

If you decide to join a gym I would suggest joining the closest gym to your home possible. It makes short work out still worth it and it is a lot harder not to go when it is just down the street.
