I've just posted this on my games blog - Binary Joy, but I was so impressed with the the new things I've seen I thought I'd try to spread the word :)
This is actually about the recent GDC (game developers conference) event. Sony did really well at their keynote speech, and showed some genuinely cool stuff.
The first is Playstation home - which is Nintendo Mii's on steroids.
And the second (and for me the best) is Little big Planet. This game looks amazing, with wonderful visuals and truly (dare I say it) original gameplay. I love the interactivity and dynamism of the game, and I have a thing for physics based games anyway.
You can check out videos of both on Binary Joy.
Oh and if you're wondering where the other ten games are... there's a link in the post on my site.

I've got $20..you want to raise the other $580 for me?
I'm sorry, but $600 is too much for a video game, no matter what it does.

I agree - the price is the big problem for me as well. FWIW the PS3 is $800 in the UK - however these games DO look incredibly cool (at least to me)

Sorry, I still don't see any compelling reason to get a PS3. It's nice to see they're finally getting some games you can play on it though ;-)

Lol - I think people may be misunderstanding my intention here. I'm a hardcore Wii fanboy. I rarely talk about Sony, but these two games, the Little big Planet in particular, are very cool looking (at least in my opinion).
It's interesting to see that people are still not in the slightest bit interested though - I was really stunned when I saw Little Big Planet.

Little Big Planet looks amazing. Too bad Sony screwed themselves by taking too long to release the PS3 and accompanying titles(Not to mention the price). I've already crossed over to the 360 side.

I would buy a PS3 for Little Big Planet IF and ONLY IF the PS3 didn't cost $600.
Run me one for $250 and I'd snatch it up like there's NO tomorrow.

I'd buy a PS3 for 250 even though I already have a 360.

The PS3 is a steal at what it's priced at, and I think they need to do more to market this point. Look how much a Blu-Ray drive cost which is included in the PS3's price. Not to mention the Cell processor is one of the most incredible microprocessors ever created, designed directly for insane graphics capabilities.
So you get a 3.2Ghz Cell processor, Blu-Ray drive, immersive HD gaming experience, all on an Internet-enabled box for only $600.

I'm sorry, but I don't care if the thing could do my laundry and walk my dog... $600 is not a "steal" for my wallet.

I posted "How Sony Screwed Up" back in November... It catalogues some 122 cock-ups from Sony ranging from PR nightmares to technical explosions and let-downs... Over just 365 days.
One cock up every 3 days.
Considering the BR player is relatively untested (in that it's not in many other consumer electronics) and you've no option to get rid of it from the PS3, I think trusting Sony to manage to win a media war against HDDVD is stupid. They couldn't even get their console right.
Oh and it's STILL not out here! For FUCK'S SAKE!
And when it does get released in 2 weeks time, it's going to be ~£550... That's at least $1000. They're just trying to fuck the biggest gaming market in the arse. I, for one, am not impressed.

Sorry that price is for the console and 3 games... Still... What a bargain!
Oh and Mike: The cell processor is the best chip ever? Is that why the games are offering the same graphics performance as the 360? Sometimes worse, sometimes better but they average out to about the same.
Being forced to buy a BR player is not a good thing, either. See above and the comments on my blog post.

The cell processor is pretty technologically awesome. It's especially exciting as a potential multi/grid processor platform. That's almost irrelevant to the flop that is the PS3 though.
Same with Blu-Ray. Technically superior format to HD-DVD, but more expensive to make, later release, and failure at market positioning to the largest audience.
I know exactly what's wrong with Sony. They lost sight of their customers and are in denial.

Okay I can agree on that. The tech is good but their implementation and they way they've developed it has sucked.
I think things could have been a lot better if they'd let developers in earlier... As it is most of the games are ports or a general port or how developers would have done something on another system. I appreciate the Cell is different but that is only more reason to let your devs have a look a lot sooner than you would for a conventional system.

$600... wow. I still can't fathom paying that much for a console. I understand that it can bathe my cat and cook my dinner, but I really just want to play games. I don't need it to watch movies or anything else. Just play games. I don't care how many cool things come out for it, it's just too damned much.

I don't want Blu Ray so I don't care how much I "save", and buying a console simply for a processor is ridiculous. Currently there are no good games for the thing, however my post above shows this may be changing... now they just need to sort out the price and maybe they will get some more customers.

Playstation Home is the first truly sweet thing I've seen about the PS3. Keep it up and there may be hope yet!

I'm with Oli on SONY's thought that it's going to forge a new frontier with BluRay vs HDDVD.
VHS v. BetaMax anyone?
SONY has far too many dings in it's fenders to be a #1 contender in my book and quite honestly I still think Microsoft has everyone beat (amazingly) with the 360.
If you're into hard core, HD level gaming then I hands down recommend the 360. If you want family fun and party games I'd get a Wii.
PS3? No thanks.

After watching little big planet trailer and playing a few other games, i would have to bow to sony and say ok. Now i am impressed and ready to spend 600$. In the end ill save money by getting ps3 instead of xbox 360. Sony online is free of charge, and xbox 360 is not. That kinda shit adds up. :)
Plus i never liked xbox controller.

The Xbox 360's wireless controller is the finest piece of design I've fondled in years. It's really the bomb as far as joypads go.
If you can afford the 400€ or 600€ console, I don't think the 6€ per month for Live can be that much of a hurdle (that's like one game per year!). However, I have zero tolerance for further monthly bills on Live.

I'm not even going to get into this discussion, but I wanted to point out an article I just came across over at GameSpot - 10 Things to Make the Playstation 3 Worth Buying.
I hardly consider a list of games where most are multi-platform viable reasons for spending a ton on a console that is riddled with holes.

I won't be getting a PS3 basically because of the price...
I am SO excited God of War 2 is coming out for the PS2. :happy dance:

So after playing the Nintendo Wii down at Paul's house I can say that it's the one game system I desperately want. Wii baseball was so much fun I think I'd get tennis elbow or something if I played it as much as I wanted to.

Even though Blockbuster has thrown its hat into the Blu-Ray ring, Microsoft and Co. will have something to say about HD-DVD. With a larger install base of 360s, if they were to drop the price on the HD-DVD player it would see a much higher adoption rate than it has now.
Even so, I'm not giving either side a cent until we have a real, confirmed format. Until then I'll just enjoy my 360.
I know one person with a PS3 and he regrets buying it for the simple reason that most of what he wants to play (RPGs mainly) are not out yet, or have been released on the 360, which he also owns.
The PS3, much like the Wii needs to get a great library of games then it can be a real contender in the market.
No matter how many bits it can process, what resolution it can output, or what the hard drive size is, the thing people seem to forget is it comes down to one thing.
Is it fun?

Mike - Hoorah, welcome to the light side of the force :) I must admit I'm not a big fan of the baseball game but love Wii Tennis and Bowling. I guess baseball not being so big in the UK has something to do with that.
Peroty - you've hit it square on the head. Nintendo have repeatedly shown that the hardware matters not (DS, and Gameboy being prime examples) having fun games is where it's at.

@BinaryMoon: I wouldn't say that hardware doesn't matter. I've owned a Wii for about 4 months and it hardly ever gets used.
I have a wife and daughter that love gaming, but both spend more time with the Xbox 360 than the Wii. I know from their perspective, it's about the games and the lack of at this point.
But from my stand point, I have a really hard time with the dated graphics, lack of widescreen support and mediocre controls. So much so, that I picked up Resident Evil 4 for the Wii this past week and couldn't play it on my HDTV for more than 20 minutes. I moved it upstairs where we have a 27" Sony Trinitron in the bedroom and played it for a couple hours straight. But what happens when we get a bigger HDTV for the living room and our current one goes to the bedroom? In my eyes, the Wii is decent in the short term, but I highly doubt it will have a 4-5 year lifespan that console normally have.
The PS3 on the other hand - while still not worth shelling out coin for in my opinion, it will get there eventually.
