As some of you know or don't, this year I'm starting my honours research project that will last until the end of the year. Now I'm not usually one for sorting my life into neat little calendar boxes but because it's going to be a full on year for me with a choke full of events and deadlines, I'm going to have to learn how to write down my appointments in advance.
That's where I kinda need advice from you guys.
Does anyone here rely on a more tech dependent way of sorting everything out? If you do, what do you use and does it save you time?
I used an actual planner/diary before, but I couldn't be stuffed writing it all down and because I'm also carrying a notebook for all my research notes with me as well, it feels a bit troublesome flipping through all those pages.
I'm trying out Google Calendar at the moment but seeing that I always have to be online to add and check my schedules seems a bit limiting. Are there any offline alternatives that I can run off a laptop without net access or even running directly from a thumbdrive itself?
Any ideas?

Consider Google Gears, which is a way to use Google web apps offline.

Hmm, I don't know why more people didn't respond to this, but there are so many great ways of staying organized, keeping track of things, and staying on track yourself. I wrote about keeping a calendar and such on my blog, so hopefully you'll find that helpful.
Basically, what I do to keep track of lots of data is keep both an electronic and written forms of to-dos, events, reminders, and etc. The things you want to have written down and posted in places you frequent at, are the very important things. You can keep an electronic form of an organizer like a PDA, Phone (in my case, an iPhone), or if you want to go extreme, a laptop.
There are certainly benefits to the fact that you are already used to using a hand-written diary/organizer to keep track of things. I had it pretty bad at first cause I never wrote anything down before. One thing that you might question is rather or not you should carry an electronic one, or a written planner, OR both. That's one thing you would have to experiment with and see what you're most comfortable with. I carry my iPhone everywhere, naturally, and sometimes I bring along a small notepad for quicker and more instantaneous note taking.
Hope this helps, even though it's a bit late. :)

Treo...get one, sync it with your computer. Love mine.
Organizer / mobile browser / email / phone / mp3 player all in one.

Thanks for the tips guys.
Unfortunately, PDA's are kinda out of the question due to their lack of usefulness beyond keeping track of things. Given that I also haven't written lists like that before, it'll just be an expensive paperweight by the end of it. It is a nifty toy though, but not something I can afford to spend.
That being said, I am planning to get myself an EeePC. It ain't a PDA, but since it's a 7" notebook, it can do all my paperwork, surf and still help me keep track of my schedule as well provided I'm connected online.
I can try Google Gears as well, that might work for me In case I'm not connected at all.

That's pretty sweet. If you have time, let us know how it all turns out with the EeePC, and how it serves as an organization tool.
