i've been playing around with my Nikon D40x and i cannot for the life of me take any decent action shots in low light. what i've been specifically trying to get shots of are local concert shots. i've tried messing with the shutter speeds, using a higher ISO, and i'm still not getting anywhere. i think i need a different lens to get anywhere, but being a total amateur, i have no idea where to start. can anyone point me in the right direction?

You'd be in the same position with any camera really - basically it'd be easier with something with a big aperture to let more light in. You'd have to check compatibility and your preferred focal length. Chances are a 50mm F1.8 will do just fine unless you sit at the back of stadiums!

If you can't control the light, you need as big an aperture as you can get. You'll probably need high ISO as well.

For a rock show, unless it's outside in the day, the BARE minimum will be an f2.8 aperture lens. Often times that's not even fast enough, there are some terribly lit venues out there.

In some situations (depending on the venue and artist requests,) flash is an option. Just never assume that it's ok to use a flash at a performance, always know for sure before you try it.
