So I've been thinking about diving into photography as a more serious hobby. I have a decent point and shoot camera with some SLR like features (Cannon Powershot G9), but I think I'd like to pick up a decent DSLR to learn on.
Do you guys have any suggestions for where I should start as far as the body, the lenses and additional equipment I should have?

We've got a couple threads on this already.
Your question is a bit more focused, so I'll give it a go.
Go Canon or go Nikon, and never look back. Since you're already shooting Canon, chances are you're used to the ergonomics they have, but do yourself a favour and go pick up a Nikon, fiddle with it, see what feels right in your hand, what is easy to control/change settings on. These are the two kings of photography (as far as SLR,) and you can't go wrong with either.
Take into consideration what you want to do today, and 5 years from now. Shooting portraits? Nature? Sports? Look at the strengths and weaknesses of both systems... because it is a system, and not just a camera.
To start out with I'd suggest grabbing one of the budget prime lenses, 50mm f1.8. Both makes have them, and they're cheap, sharp, and great in low light. The fixed perspective will limit you in some ways, but having that will force you to pay attention to your composition, exposure, etc. That will bring you up to speed on DSLR. From there... well it just depends what you want to shoot.
Feel free to hit me up on aim or messaging if you like.

I just read this interesting DSLR comparison article on Gizmodo that you might find helpful.
