here's my most interesting .... a lovestruck graffiti artist in my neighborhood peppered the sidewalks with messages to his beloved. i walked past this one at a time when i most needed to receive this message, even if it wasn't exactly intended for me =)

artist unknown

the image below actually made it to the explore page, but is only the 7th most interesting. oh flickr, will we ever understand you?

Obamaudacity: The possibly irrationally exuberant belief that Barack Obama's candidacy will energize young voters, sweeping him into the White House and causing Generations X and Y to take ownership of their country.

Meh .... Gaiman touched on some grand ideas but didn't go very deep; I was mildly interested in the story, but not emotionally invested.

Gaiman purposely left out Allah and Yahweh, for obvious reasons.

What are the obvious reasons? And how are you liking the book so far?

» November's Fiction Book: American Gods (Gaiman) - Chapters 6 - 10  ...  Last Reply: 12 months ago by LorriM

It's an interesting idea: immigrants to America brought with them manifestations of their homeland gods. These gods, most of them semi-forgotten, much diminished versions of themselves, form a sort of 'old gods' subculture and live underneath the radar of American society.

Looks like Gaiman's building up to a showdown between the old school and the newer gods of modernity: gods of TV and computer and credit cards and blah blah blah, but I have to wonder ...

Where are the big 3 in all this? Where's Allah? Yahweh? JC?

» November's Fiction Book: American Gods (Gaiman) - Chapters 1 - 5  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Gnorb

So far so good ... I've been able to identify a couple of the gods. The fertility goddess could be from any number of cultures ... Mr. Nancy must be Anansi the spider: a trickster deity in a number of African & African Diaspora religions.

The three sisters, Mr. Wednesday and Czernobog have me stumped, though. Where are they from? What's their purpose? Does grumpy Czernobog exist only for sacrifice (the whole bashing brains in thing).

What does it mean that these gods are all broken down, old, not exactly in the best health. Is this what happens to divinity in America?

How about Letters to a Young Teacher?

I heard the author interview on NPR and it sounds incredibly interesting; all about American public education.

In a 20 chapter book, we could discuss chapters 1-5 the first week, 6-10 the second, etc.? That way, we'd all have our deadlines and know what was going to be discussed.

That's a great idea, ErinR .... it will make the reading seem more participatory instead of saving (and remembering) all your thoughts for the end.

What about starting the voting on the first of the month and leaving it open for 2 weeks? That would leave 2 weeks before anyone started reading it to get it.

Sounds fine to me ... so just to clarify: vote for 2 weeks, purchase & start reading said book, then then kick off discussion 2 weeks after that?

» Suggestions?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Gnorb

I'll get on board with Gaiman's 'American Gods'. I've never read any of his work, but the amazon.com description sounds intriguing.

Sooooo.... how we gonna do this anyway?

A book a month is feasible for me; I got too much else going on to do more. Should we set a specific 'read by' date and then start the discussion?

» Anyone read Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" Series?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by tmcdaily

I first read the Gunslinger in the late 80s and have been a Dark Tower nut since. You're lucky you're starting now; the wait between books (sometimes years!) was maddening.

I've read almost all of King's books, and I have to say the Stand and the Dark Tower series are his best work. Part of the pleasure of reading the Tower books is identifying chracters, Flagg most prominently, from his other novels & short stories.

I think it's safe to say that every book King has written, the Stand included, is really about the Dark Tower.

I worry that if I try to force it, then it will start to feel more like an obligation or a job than something that I actually enjoy.

my sentiments exactly ... sometimes you just lose your groove, but if you're patient it'll come on back.
