» How Do You Present Your Archives to Visitors?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by bitsonewmedia.

Ooh I've been pondering this same thing. I have an archive of 400 food reviews and I would love to feature some of the older reviews. But here are my thoughts.

There are a few options. That top box with all the meta information could be used to house a random - or featured - post with an exerpt.

Also I like the related entries. But, I also like regular monthly archives and categories. I have used them to navigate people's sites and I am sure others do and will.

Also the layout instead of showing the last n entries - for example, could show the last entry from each category.

I think magazine style layouts lend towards showing more content, but it's harder to incorporate ads.

» Blog Ads - Necessary Evil?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by divabat.

I don't mind ads at all - unless it's a personal site. Sites that give value and are less personal in nature - then I say go for it (as long as it's not pop up ads). Personally I hate to see ads disgused as content - and text link ads on a text heavy site. I have no problem clicking on the ads that interest me, but I don't want to be fooled into it.

People who hate ads are just haters - in my opinion :0)

Actually - I changed my mind. I'm going with Abi's idea and choosing 5 random 9Rules sites and leaving a comment 'cuz I loves my 9ers.

I would change the layout and upgrade it - but I also like Abi's idea.

» How can I get out of my cellphone contract?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by avuee.

Sprint just changed their text messaging rate or something, so there is a clause in your contract that says if they change any of their terms and agreements, you can get out of the contract. Go to consumerist.org for more info on this.

» how to make oneself STAND OUT during an interview?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Devin.

To really stand out in an interview is to be memorable - something has to be different about you.

For example: my brother is a civil engineer. He has a portfolio just showing some of the sites that he has worked on, some equipment etc. He stands out because it is not a normal thing for an engineer to have a portfolio.

How do you not only SAY you have passion - but where's the proof.Concrete numbers of how you increased sales at a previous company and what did you do; maybe for a web designer, say - you know what, let me show you my work in action and whip out your laptop (with wireless network card?) and bring up some sites you worked on - or do it on theirs - whatever.

» Even your phone number can reveal your secret online life  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by auburn.

Okay - my embarassing story: my entrance to the net was by way of a personal blog (now defunct). I had a blind date with a guy once, and wrote all the "I hate this guy because he is fat, ugly blah blah blah" on my blog.

However, I still continued talking to him, until one day he says, I found your blog online. I was so embarassed. He is like, well, I gained weight because of a health condition etc. I felt like I wanted to just curl up and die. He was a champ about it though and to this day we are friends - oddly enough.

Even your phone number can reveal your secret online life

Personal Community — Posted: Jul. 18, 2007  ...   Last By: auburn @ 1 year ago

So, at work yesterday, we get a call from a university graduate student requesting some data on one of our products. On a whim, my coworker decides to google his phone number of all things - mind you we are scientists.

A really popular article that the guy had written is referenced (it was even on CNN and all) - followed by his gay pimp forum - I totally spaz on the name of it now.

I know most people wouldn't just google a phone number - but damn! Be careful people - be careful. Anybody have any embarassing - I googled you stories? I'll share mine in the comments - this is already long enough.

From a novice user and occasional digg user: I really like your app - I'm not sure if the design is just temporary, but I would make it much clearer that these are the most commented stories on dig - forget the 'townhall' and make the 'most talked about' way bigger and bolder - And also the link to the stry more prominent, and if possible the last few comments too with a link to view the rest.

I cannot believe I have the longest commute so far: I drive 45 minutes every morning and it takes 1 hour to get back home in the evening. I leave by 7:15 AM and get off work between 4:30 and 5:00PM.

Brag and Boast: April 22-27

What's the best thing that you did this week - or that happened to you? Did you save the world, kick ass on your job, ace a test - come on, tell us.

For me: I found the keycard that lets me in through the back entrance of the building at work. I had lost it, and sadly I was going in late everyday - and going through the front entrance - when I work at the back - was like taking a walk of shame - who's seeing me, who's checking how many times I've been late - when are they going to tell my boss - who was on vacation.

When I found it, I nearly screamed with joy - now i could sneak in ... still late. I promise to turn over a new leaf next week though.

Is anybody else NOT on any social networking sites?

Web Community — Posted: Apr. 28, 2007  ...   Last By: LorriM @ 1 year ago

Man, where do people with a full time job and blogs also find the time to be on facebook, twitter, linked in, yada yada?

So I know it's good for networking, blog promotion etc., but I can barely find the time to com check out my 9rules people, so I definitely have no time for web 2.0 stuff. Anybody else like me?

Coffee Shop Goer?

Food Community — Posted: Jan. 28, 2007  ...   Last By: avuee @ 1 year ago

Do you frequent coffee shops? I specifically mean, not only to buy a cup of java, but sit there with a laptop, hang out, write a blog entry or 2, do homework, surf the net etc ...

I used to go pretty regular th elast 2 years of grad school. Now that I'm no longer in school, I definitely don't go as much as I used to.

Is your picture on your blog?

Blogging Community — Posted: Oct. 13, 2006  ...   Last By: xine @ 1 year ago

Do you have a picture of you on your blog (assuming you are not an anon. blogger)? What are your thoughts - to have one or not? Why? I was getting a lot of questions about what I look like - probably something having to do with people wanting to know if I looked 'healthy' or not since I run a healthy foods blog. I finally put one on - not sure it adds any value to the site or not - especially since it's taken with my camera phone :0)

Are there any song lyrics that describe your life right now?

Music Community — Posted: Oct. 11, 2006  ...   Last By: stefani @ 2 years ago

For me, it would be, "I got 99 problems and a bitch ain't one" by JayZ. Mostly becuase I've been getting a lot of, "I can't believe you ain't got a man - why you lying?" This from people who know I was trying to finish up my dissertation, trying to find a job, walking because my car was written off in an accident, and living in a place I didn't want to be. But those lyrics perfectly sum up my mindset.

» Boring Blog?  ...  Last Reply: 2 years ago by chris.

I also wanted to say there is no 'about' section. What's the blog about - the direction, i.e. what can I expect to read. Also nothing about the person that's writing the blog? Yeah - I'm nosey like that. I want to read more about who's writing the blog.

Also, I have to second commenting regularly on other blogs - the ones that interest you (and that return the favor and comment on yours - otherwise, you're wasting you time with that), and joining some forums (although I must say I never got lots of traffic from this).

In NY - it's weird weather. One day it's cold, break out the light jackets, the next day it warms up. i would say autumn 'unofficially' started about a week and a half ago. Leaves are changing color eveyrwhere!

Foods to avoid: chicken wings - hard to look cute tearing into those. Salad - I think should be avoided too - get the damn thing on the fork - chew * chomp * chew.

Best thing: Soup (as long as the guys don't slurp it :0) and any boneless meat!
