» Anyone have experience with SimplePie?  ...  Last Reply: 3 weeks ago by seopher.

SimplePie is the RSS module of choice for us when we're doing such things on large client websites; I have nothing against Magpie and use it for a couple of smaller things, but I have it on good authority that SP is more sustainable for large operations.

Could all be propaganda though...

» Flexible and cheap VPS hosts?  ...  Last Reply: 3 weeks ago by seopher.

Oli you're probably going to have to speak to smaller hosts on a one-to-one basis to see if they can cater to your fairly specific needs.

Large hosts don't lose much by turning your business away and as such thay can be quite rigid with their conditions. Smaller hosts may not have the massive infrastructure but they can be more negotiable with your requirements.

No examples I'm afraid >_<

» Some advice, I've hit a bit of a wall with my web projects  ...  Last Reply: 3 months ago by seopher.

Some good advice there sir and something I've certainly thought about. I think tagging the niche I operate in is hard, because I don't really discuss making money online (because I don't really make any), instead I focus on metablogging and marketing - two things I actually do and enjoy.

It's just finding content within this niche that has sufficient mainstream appeal to attract new readers... That's the trick.

Some advice, I've hit a bit of a wall with my web projects

Entrepreneur Community — Posted: Aug. 13, 2008  ...   Last By: seopher @ 3 months ago

Hi guys (especially love for S, T and M), I've not been around much for many reasons, but while I'm trying to get my life together I've been pondering how to get my web-shizz together too.

I've been running a few websites for quite a while but prosperity seems awfully low; Seopher.com is running on decent subscriber levels but there's surprisingly little attention on the new content. It's barely paying for it's own upkeep too, and that's not ideal.

I just wanted to canvas opinion on maybe where I should be taking things. I'm finding marketing the website is a lucrative past time and I just need to somehow break through this glass ceiling and get more users reading the latest material and generally make the site more profitable.

Any thoughts?

Yeah it's part of the 'watch out for cyclists' campaign in this country, good piece of viral IMO.

I didn't see it either first time

» How do you go about with several blogs?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by mStudios.

The only thing with Yahoo pipes is that you're only allowed a certain number of requests to them per IP (in a set timescale).

It's not hard to get banned from them for a day for hitting it too hard with AJAX requests etc.

But for what you're talking about you should be fine :)

» Anyone here do freelance blog work?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by seopher.

It just so happens that there are some excellent designers here at Wordpress who would be happy to discuss your requirements (obviously for a price).

Have a nose around a few of the 9rules members who are classified in design; if you like their stuff drop them an email. Or wait for someone to get to you o here :)

We get an inflated sense of importance, as well as an ego that people care about our opinion.

Or at least I do.

» Is my business really workable?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by wrttnwrd.

I work for a new media marketing agency too, and this sentence concerned me:

I think I've answered my own question. We earn 2/3 of what other agencies do, from 4x as many clients.

Increase your day-rate. If you've got more clients, up the day-rate you charge. This way the irritating clients who take too much of your time and don't spend enough will leave, allowing you to focus more on new pitches and delivering better work to the ones who stay.

Mmmm yeah my maths wasn't ideal but you get my point.

@subimage
you're probably right :)

» How much traffic do I need to make ads pay?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by shadowsun7.

Define "worthwhile".

If you have 5 visitors a day, every 50 days you might get a click, for $0.30. If that's worthwhile then 5 visitors a day is your answer.

If you have 50,000 visitors a day and you're netting 5,000 clicks, then $150 a day could be yours and there's your answer.

I've seen blogs without much traffic do well financially through CPA programmes because their readers were after specific information and the advertising suited that nicely.

Other sites that have lots of traffic but only run a small CPC network like Google Adsense have been known to make very little, it's really different horses for different courses.

I don't find it a problem but I've been here a while now.

» Say goodbye to SEO as you know it, say hello to LSI  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by ivanpw.

In my opinion good content should be written using a suitable width of language, using synonyms and whatnot. So LSI seems like the best way to naturally assign relevance.

Unfortunately it seems that keyword density is still a massive factor.

» Online + Life + Work = 24 hours for everyone?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by shadowsun7.

lol karma, funny yet good advice.

I think it's worth mentioning that there is a point where you have to admit that you've taken on too much.

I have that problem when I have people paying me for reviews and wanting them done sooner rather than later. When work is busy it takes away my time, then any social commitments really absorb whatever I have left. A time machine is the only way to make it work without something suffering.

Just make sure you're not making the wrong things suffer.

» Online + Life + Work = 24 hours for everyone?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by shadowsun7.

Funnily enough I've just done another guest post for John Chow on how I manage my time, and how difficult I find it balancing everything in my life.

linky

Basically it's hard to manage. I have my duties as a home-owner, as a boyfriend, as a cat-owner, as a professional web developer, as a freelancer and as a human to manage, then when you add in blogging it becomes really busy!

» Is it accurate to use the term "Web 3.0"?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by Johnny.

I hate terms like this. Marketers love to use these "buzzwords" without any understanding of what they mean. I'd instinctively get them to give examples of Web3.0.

All too often people use bullshit terms like this in inteviews to sound impressive without "teh skillz to pay teh billz"

» Where can I find strong CSS/HTML/Photoshop coders?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by inclindkevin.

In my professional opinion as a web developer you're going to be caught in catch-22 land for quite some time.

Quality = Price

My hourly rate is quite high because I'm good at what I do and work for one of the UK's biggest marketing agencies. To get good quality work you need to pay for it.

Places that turn PSD's into XHTML will give results that correlate to their price. Pay a lot and it'll be good, pay very little and it'll be poor. If they're too expensive for you then you might be in a spot of bother.

I personally charge like £25-30 per hour for work like this and a lot of my collegues charge similar amounts or more. Like I said, Quality = Price.
