Can’t Find The G-Spot? You’re Not Alone: The Science of Sex

Love & Sex Community — Posted: Jun. 16, 2008

As much as I am inspired and impressed by modern medical and scientific advancements—nanotechnology, laparoscopic surgery, and genome sequencing to name a few—I’m also a bit shocked by the fact that we haven’t yet mastered some of the basics. Take human anatomy for instance. Yes, we’ve identified the twenty-six bones of the foot and the ventricles of the brain, but when it comes to deciphering the female urogenital tract, scientists are still at the drawing board. In fact, they have the same questions you might—does the G-spot exist, and if so, where the heck is it? Do women really have a prostate, and if so, can they ejaculate?

No More Cavities?

Personal Community — Posted: Jun. 16, 2008

A Florida-based company called Oragenics may have found a way to rid our mouths of these acid-excreting organisms for good. This would make cavities a thing of the past, and put no small number of dentists out of business. But despite the obvious benefits, there is potential for disaster.

The 25 Worst Sitcoms Ever

Television Community — Posted: Jun. 10, 2008

TV has its hits and misses, right? For every great sitcom, there’s a pile of crappy ones. Some get cancelled right out of the gate — others drag on for years, begging to be put out of their misery.

TV Sidekicks That Steal My Show

Television Community — Posted: Jun. 9, 2008

I’ll be the first to admit—TV sidekicks out-nerd (Chloe, the power behind Jack Bauer), out-funny (Cosmo Kramer), and just plain out-do (hello, Dwight Schrute) most predictable main characters. Sometimes I love them, sometimes I hate them, but there’s no doubt—I can’t forget 'em. True, they may be mere tagalongs to the Jerry Seinfelds, Michael Scotts, and Peter Griffins of the TV world, but these 15 show-stealing sidekicks have kept me tuning in…again, and again, and again (yes, I watch way too much TV).

This discussion makes me feel like I don't push the boundaries with blogging software. Am I the only one that uses a blog to blog? WP does that pretty well and I don't see the admin interface that much since I use MarsEdit.

Sapphire joins the 2160p LCD TV party

Technology Community — Posted: Jun. 7, 2008

Not that you could really take advantage of the resolution of a quad HDTV today, but just in case you want to run a video game in 8.3 megapixel resolution – four times what current 1080p TVs offer - on a 56” display, Sapphire will be the second company we know of that is actually selling such a display. The bragging rights of owning such a TV come at a hefty price, of course.

Why Men Have Breasts

Science Community — Posted: Jun. 7, 2008

As much as men hate to hear this, the human fetal blueprint is initially female. We all begin as a ball of cells that quickly differentiates into various body parts. At five weeks of gestation, the fetus sports a neural tube that eventually becomes the spine, but other than that, we all look like a wad of chewing gum. Then at six weeks' gestation, the outlines of eyes, arms, legs and a face (and let's not mention the tail that also shows up for a while) appear.

A similar tipster tonight has very generously given us these pics of the iPhone 2, or iPhone 3G as some are calling it. Like the Fat Nano from last summer, the images come from Apple or AT&T promotional material that shows not just the new iPhone, but also gives away a couple secrets.

35 Fantastic HDR Pictures

Photography Community — Posted: Mar. 19, 2008

Applied carefully, High Dynamic Range-technique (HDR) can create incredibly beautiful pictures which blur our sense of the difference between reality and illusion. In graphics HDR imaging is a set of techniques that allow a far greater dynamic range of exposures than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to the deepest shadows. This is usually achieved by modifying photos with image processing software for tone-mapping. And the results can be really incredible; in fact, many artists and designers come up with some pretty fancy results.

The Courage To Do Things Simply

Programming Community — Posted: Mar. 19, 2008

I think that sometimes people think I'm into complexity for its own sake, but that's really not true. If you see me delving into complexity, it's only when I'm after the simplicity that sometimes lies on the far side. Sometimes, the differences in things that a program needs to do can mask their underlying secret symmetry, and if you can tease that symmetry out into the open, you can improve the design by simplifying it on both the inside and the outside. The most innovative software products are often not those that merely add new features, but those that discover a new way to approach a problem: one that makes it simpler, such that fewer features are needed in the first place.

The Shrinking Advantage Of Brands

Business Community — Posted: Feb. 18, 2008

Brands are perhaps the most intuitive example of cheap interaction’s atomizing hand. Yesterday, they were a potent source of advantage. Today, the game has changed: investing in traditional brands is yielding fast diminishing returns, and leading more and more players directly into value destruction. That’s why it’s not just revolutionaries like Google, but also mass-market giants like Nike and P&G, who are rethinking orthodox branding.

A Better Way To Start A Business

"There are many things that we know enhance the performance of startups that most entrepreneurs aren't doing," Shane writes. "You can take the atypical (and better) approach. If you do, you won't guarantee your success, but you will increase your odds." His tips follow.

The Fakebook Generation

Commentary Community — Posted: Oct. 17, 2007

For young people, Facebook is yet another form of escapism; we can turn our lives into stage dramas and relationships into comedy routines. Make believe is not part of the postgraduate Facebook user’s agenda. As more and more older users try to turn Facebook into a legitimate social reference guide, younger people may follow suit and stop treating it as a circus ring. But let’s hope not.

» What do people think about Naruto?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by darkpixel.

Nartuo is a bit more unqiue than Dragonball Z in the sense that it feels like the creators are trying to grow the show with their audience. Dragonball was always meant for the kiddies and adults who just like silly action non-stop, while Naruto started off the same way the show continues to get darker and darker, like it is maturing as the audience matures. Still hard to get people into something when there are over 200 episodes to show with no end in sight.

Radiohead: 1.3 Million Downloads

For Radiohead, the gambit is an unqualified success: While true cheapskates could take the songs for free, anyone willing to pay at least a penny also ended up paying a 45 pence (91 cents U.S.) processing charge, so band will certainly cover costs, and is quite likely to make a significant profit.

Why was Gandhi Never Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize

Commentary Community — Posted: Oct. 13, 2007

Up to 1960, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded almost exclusively to Europeans and Americans. In retrospect, the horizon of the Norwegian Nobel Committee may seem too narrow. Gandhi was very different from earlier Laureates. He was no real politician or proponent of international law, not primarily a humanitarian relief worker and not an organiser of international peace congresses. He would have belonged to a new breed of Laureates.
