I'd say try to get a shot of the other photographer taking the picture while everyone is formally composed, sort of a "behind the scenes" shot.
Veronique,
Just looked at lorettalux.... in a word... wow.
Chase's is definitely excellent. I have to say though, I'm very partial to the "Daily Sunrise" (9rules member). This kid is flat out talented.
JMathias,
I didn't even know Nikon made prime lenses with AF-S, usually it's just AF. Where'd you get it?
Growing the beard is definitely the one essential part of that suggestion... :P
1. Prague
2. Barcelona (although I've never been so that's sort of a reach)
3. Prague
4. London
5. Chicago
6. Seattle (again, never been but I hear it's fantastic)
7. DC
8. Did I mention Prague? ;)
Agree on the MoMA stuff, other than that, it really depends on who you're shopping for. I'm not much for things that say the name of the place where I've been, I'd rather get things that are kind of unique and interesting, that spark people to say "wow, where'd you get that?". I'm also all about random local artifacts (read: maps). I think a cool gift can be an entire NY Subway map.
I just started using a second (free) flickr account. I'm starting to get a little serious about photo, and I don't want to share my personal drinking/partying/etc photos with my very-slightly-above-amateur work. Separating business from pleasure if you will ;)
Honestly, all I want right now is a Nikon 50mm prime with AF-S
My one regret is not taking the advice of a pro and buying into the same brand that my friends have. A couple of my friends are getting rid of some old Canon lenses that I could have used had I gone with a Canon instead of a Nikon. However, I love my dSLR and am still glad I made the choice.
1. yes -- 2 - casio exilim and a Nikon D40
2. very interested
3. yes
4. just 9 rules for now
So I'm starting to get into the world of "slightly above amateur photography" and I came across this article:
http://www.morguefile.com/archive/classroom.php
It's a free online self paced introduction. She's got some great examples of techniques she's talking about. Check it out, let me know what you think.
Here's an interesting concept, the DIY string tripod
http://www.instructables.com/id/ERUNUN3F0ZSTF0W/
esterla: that's actually a cool product. I dunno how stable the images are going to be but i've never thought to use a monopod for that purpose.
RightOn: i've never seen one of those before, awesome idea. I'm using a Nikon D40 (dSLR) so it won't work, but, I bet I can rig something up on the cheap. Time for some MacGyver...
Heya folks,
Anybody got any good tripod suggestions? I need it to be as light and small as possible. The Gorillapod won't work for me because I'll want to use it in places were there's nothing to hook it onto.
Any ideas?
thanks!
I'm pretty sure "Ethan Frome" tops it off. I mean, I can respect the work but it was a BOOORING read.
Thats true.. you could always go and get loaded on them :)
I definately feel for you. Conveniently be out of town that weekend. Of course, go with the whole card/gift cert thing. Besides, in my opinion, a second marriage shouldn't be that big of a deal. I think it should be more reserved for family and close friends, so you're actually celebrating the union rather than the wedding, know what I mean?
I really liked the beach at Montauk, NY. It's not the best one I've been to as far as beaches go (that would probably be in Nassau in the Bahamas), but i really really enjoyed the town around it. Same thing with Wilmington, NC.
I love to fly, and surprisingly, I LOVE the turbulence. Toss me around as much as you want, just don't kill me and we're cool. Other than that, sometimes I get nervous if something just doesn't sound right, but then I think about how pointless it is to worry. If we're going to crash, chances are, I wont' feel a thing anyways, so whatever, there's nothing I can do to help my chances at this point.
Apart from that, I'm not a big fan of the international flight food, but the little liquor bottles are chock full of goodness :)

If you're into indian food, hop on the train and head to South Hall. It's literally like being in New Delhi and the food is unbeatable. Other than that, I was only in London for a weekend, so it was getting drunk at night and seeing the touristy crap (the Palace, Big Ben, Westminister, etc.) in the day.
Oh crap.... I just posted a new note but I should have posted it here... Sorry Tyme for intruding on this thread! Anyways, fantastic.
Nas :)
When I visited Prague, I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. Sounds ghetto and I know it's an american chain hotel but the room was rather nice. The lobby wasn't much, but the room was very spacious compared to others in Prague. I think the rate was $180 per night? The location was incredible too, right down the street from old town square. When shopping for places, be sure to get a place that's in either the Old Town or the New Town (preferably the Old town, that's where all the happenings are). Also, spend the extra $$ and get a hotel that doesn't have a shared bathroom (trust me, you'll be thanking yourself later).
If you have any more questions or questions about a specific hotel, drop me a line, I'll be glad to help.
I'm not sure where this note is best suited, so I'm writing under Food. This month's DETAILS magazine has an interesting short on the science of a hangover. They've even listed a common hangover cure that I will share with you. It's sworn to by bartenders across the world and is commonly referred to by the name 'Prairie Oyster':
1 Egg yolk
1 Dash Tabasco
1 Dash Vinegar
1 Dash Worcestershire sauce
Top with fresh salt + pepper
Layer ingredients into a single shot glass and then down the hatch it goes.
I plan on trying this concotion this weekend (after my inevitable hangover) and I'll surely post my results. In the meanwhile, what are the cures that you swear by? Here's mine, and a little something I do to prevent the hangover before it begins:
If I'm doing mixed drinks, I'll try to eat all the ice before I get another drink. Before bed, I'll chug water (or gatorade if I've been dilligent in my planning). If I forget (or am too toasted to remember the night before) to take these remedies, then it's 2 Aleve followed by 2 big glasses of water, intermixed with dry toast and more water throughout the day. If I'm travelling hungover (as is often the case), nothing says I love you in the morning like a stiff Bloody Mary.
Mike, uncrate is actually an awesome resource, I didn't know about it. Gracias.
You've gotta realize that it's not you, it's her. Perhaps she typed it in wrong, perhaps you heard it wrong, etc.? My business cards have the wrong phone number on them because of a typo on my part, it happens. And honestly man, if she really meant to give you a fake number, then she's got issues (baggage perhaps?) that you really don't need.
Let me preface this note by explaining a bit about me : I'm 24, recently graduated, have a fairly decent paying job working in software, am socially active and generally like to appreciate anything stylish and cultural.
That being said, my two favorite magazines to read are "GQ" and "DETAILS". Both are arguably on the cutting edge of modern style. Anyways, I was reading one of these the other day and they had an article on camel hair coats, a sort of, "every one needs one of these" type things. The feature was based around a beautiful coat, with a mink (yes, mink) lining. The pricetag: $17,000. That's about how much I would put down on a house. If you've ever read any of these publications, you'll realize that they're geared more towards the upwardly mobile 30-40 something, established professional male. Eventually, I'd love to be able to afford the things outlined here, as well as be able to relate to all the articles, but right now, being as there's no trust fund in my name about to mature, I'm sort of left in the dust.
So, here's my question to the 9Rules community: What sources are there for 20something yuppies in training to get sophisticated, well balanced advice on a range of subjects: style, personal well being, relationships, design, LIFE?
I'm looking for both paper and online venues here.
Everyone vote for Mike!!

What do you guys think of the release of IE7 so far? I've only tested it with the web app that we've been developing here at Misys, and I really like the cleanly-minimalistic interface. It seems to be quite a bit speedier as well. What do you guys think?

I like the twice a month idea, but how about this, just announce both at the beginning of the month and have submission deadlines for both by the end of the month?
