One Million Pots Of Yogurt Binned In The UK. Every Day!

Food Community — Posted: May. 9, 2008

Every day British people throw away more than a million pots of unopened yoghurt.

Holy moly! Research has suggested that UK's trend of doing one big shop visit a week leads people to buy multi-packs of six yogurts or yogurt drinks a week, but tend to only consume one every other day. The shelf life of these products doesn't cover the 12 days, so many are simply thrown away.

I found this quite eye-opening.

I do but it isn't .com. Whoever owns OliverWhite.com hasn't done anything with it either, which is probably what would happen if I owned it.

I jumped up 20k places 'overnight'. I guess that's a good thing, but as Oli says, these tools will always have some kind of flaw and therefore inaccuracy. Nice to see overall trends though, if you're going up anyway.

When I got my 15" MBP I also splashed out on a monitor, and like you aadil I was in a quandary as to what to go for. I eventually plumped for Dell purely on price. I got a Dell E228WFP 22" WideScreen Flat Panel Monitor (shown in your link) and have had no issues with it. It's cheap, decently sized and of good quality. It's not like it's even ugly or anything.

Also, Paul made me do it.

He was right, as well! ;) Personally I prefer centred layouts, but your left-aligned version didn't look as annoying as others. Maybe it was the colour scheme or layout of other containers, I don't know but it didn't seem as annoying. Credit to you for trying though.

I'm pleased you guys went through a similar thought process as me, that makes me feel a whole lot better. At the moment it seems as though the cons outweigh the pros in my case. As the site in question is so young it's hard to answer Tyme's final question, but I totally get the jist of it. Great food for thought, thanks.

Happy Birthday Mike. With all you've done it's hard to believe you're still so young. 30 is catching up on me pretty quickly, so make sure you stick to you goal of doing what you find interesting and fun. That way, age becomes irrelevant. Have a great day.

» BlogRoll Standards  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by dbme.

I gave up on the blogroll a while ago. I do use the 9rules random link script though, so I'm not all Scrooge.

I used to put all my links on a separate page, but shortly after joining 9rules, I read a comment from someone that said they didn't like blogrolls because they didn't like playing favourites. That struck a chord with me and I got rid of mine. So I that makes my blogroll about as skinny as possible.

Instead, if a site is worthy of a link, it is included in a post. I feel that makes it more worthwhile, more genuine and readers are more likely to click it and discover new stuff.

» Are Guest Posts Worth Your Time?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by shadowsun7.

Thanks Scrivs.

In my case, the site that has asked for semi-regular contributions will link to me, but is not yet a major player; it has only just launched. Part of me feels that I could help the site grow and be a part of that, but the other side of me thinks that without monetary gain, I'm better off focusing on my site, improving my content and trying to get my site out to as many people as possible.

I'm probably being too kind and too worried about the humbug feeling. In this case I think I should decide with my brain, the heart can come later.

Are Guest Posts Worth Your Time?

Blogging Community — Posted: Mar. 26, 2008  ...   Last By: shadowsun7 @ 7 months ago

Since early 2008 I've been asked by all-and-sundry to contribute guest posts for other sites in my niche. As I was planning on a similar short series myself, I agreed and was more than happy for my writing to be considered for someone else's site. The linkage doesn't hurt either and it helps create a nice community among us. It all went well.

However, since then it seems my inbox has been inundated with requests. Again, this isn't too much of a problem providing people realise I don't blog professionally (as in, it isn't my job) and time frames are relaxed a little. But what may have become a minor issue in my mind is collaboration with another motor sport site.

I have been very graciously invited to join up with other bloggers to contribute to a Formula One site. While the added pressure to write for someone else isn't an issue, whenever I consider sitting down and creating a plan for a few posts for the site, I keep thinking that these articles would be great for my site. I keep asking myself, "Why am I giving someone else my work and my traffic?"

I then get feelings of selfishness and humbugness, but then loose drive to actually write something. I should probably also point out that aside from a link and my name being associated with the work and site, I receive little else.

Is my attitude towards this wrong? If I'm honest, I think it is, but I also love my own site and want only the best to be published. If I write a killer post but it is intended for another site I'm going to feel bitter sweet, I just know it.

Does anyone regularly guest post or contribute without return? Do you see a lot of benefits from doing so? Feel free to call me a humbug, by the way!

» Graffiti: Art or no?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by dreamweaver.

I think if the graffiti is intended to be art, then it is. If it's just some kid 'tagging' a playground ride or park bench, then that is just vandalism. Spending a lot of time in Brighton in my youth taught me to appreciate graffiti differently, particularly when it is well done, like the example you linked to.

Dumbass question 'cos I'm a dumbass: Are you guys moderating this somehow? Only I can see a lot of duplicate cliques springing up in the future. The result of searching Flickr groups for "Web Design" is a reasonable example of what I'm trying to say.

Organising WordPress Archives Alphabetically Question

Photography Community — Posted: Mar. 22, 2008  ...   Last By: Ollie @ 8 months ago

A quick question for the WordPress/PHP/MySQL gurus among us:

How would I go about organising my category view so that when I click on a category and get taken to ..mydomain/category/asides/, the posts are shown in alphabetical order according to the first letter(s) in the title/permalink?

It probably sounds like a "huh?" question, but I have a reason for wanting to know if this is possible, and if so, how.

(Must have mis-clicked the community, feel free to move.)

I have no idea who is judging American Idol (being a Brit) but I'm guessing "paula" is none other than Paula Abdul. Don't ask me how I came to that conclusion though, your description didn't ring any bells. [/sarcasm]

Like all television, I'm sure Cowell plays it up an awful lot. After all, it's his brand that he has created. But through all the drama, he is likely to be correct. He just says things that, if sitting in his office, he might be more polite about. Or fire his people for not vetting well enough.

» Anyone Have A Posting Schedule?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by Scrivs.

These are all great points (good note, themikehaynes), but I think a lot of the time a "posting schedule" depends on the type of site you run. For instance, my personal site gets updated when I want it to be. If I feel like writing, I write. And if I'm happy with it I'll hit the publish button. It is very much written for me and I couldn't give a damn about traffic or comments (although the latter are always appreciated).

But my F1 site does have a schedule, simply because its topic does as well. I wouldn't be foolish to not post on a grand prix weekend, but the post-worthy information that comes out at that time, combined with obvious interest in the sport at that time, leads me to write.

The great thing about having a schedule at BF1 is that I know when I'm going to have free time to write my good stuff. For sure, a post about a race published immediately after the race gains a shed-load of traffic. But the posts I write in between about whatever nuance of the sport I feel inspired to write about draws a shed-load of comments.

To me, that says a combination of both schedule and inspiration works. Schedule to draw interest, inspiration to draw community.

I do agree though, what you write needs to come from within. There's no point posting just because you feel the need to. The lack of passion will be evident to readers if not yourself.

shadowsun7's idea is great as well, although the fear with me is that when the post eventually goes live I've become bored with it, or it doesn't feel like its worthy anymore because it's 'not in the moment'. I guess that's called discipline. The post hasn't changed and what I feel is completely different to a reader.

» Makes Me Not Want To Fly Any Time Soon...  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by Lasha.

The pilot in this case was brave enough to admit defeat, make the call and pull up for another go. That is admirable and actually boosts my confidence in the handful of people who take the lives of thousands of people in their hands each and every day of of the year.

Last year my better half and I took a short flight from Barcelona to Florence. As we came close to Florence a staffer came on the tanoy explaining that we may get diverted to Pisa due to strong winds coming down from the mountains surrounding the airport. A collective groan was heard throughout the plane. About ten minutes later the pilot came on the tanoy and said he had absolute confidence he could land at Florence, despite the warnings, and had a date that evening he didn't want to miss. I wondered what his priorities were, but chose to trust rather than panic.

The landing was fast. Very fast. I've never experienced a plane coming down as quick as that. It shook around, almost twisting with the forces put against it. The sensation is quite weird. As the wheels touched the actual speed became even more apparent. The plane came down fricking fast. I don't know if that's a tactic that helps or if that was just the way it was that day, but the pilot struggled to slow down as we travelled down the runway.

I've landed a few times at Florence Peretola and have got used to where the taxiways are (I know, I'm sad). The plane overshot every single one of the exits. We eventually stopped to a halt, then after a short pause we u-turned and went back up to the last exit.

It wasn't scary, I wasn't afraid, but I do understand why the pilot got a round of applause from the other passengers. I smiled for him and wished him good luck in his quest to get laid. I'll never forget his announcement: "ATC recommend I divert to Pisa but I know I can land; I've got a signora waiting who needs to be taken to dinner."

100mph Hydrogen-Powered Sports Car Due For Unveiling

Automobiles Community — Posted: Mar. 3, 2008

Based on the Morgan Aero-8, the Lifecar is hydrogen-powered and produces little noise and only water vapour from its exhaust. The creators aim to keep the weight down to ~700kg, only a little more than a modern F1 car+driver. It should have a top speed of around 100mph and will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

We may have to supply headphones with the sounds of a five litre V8 linked to the throttle pedal.

I use Alex King's Popularity Contest plugin and have it set to show the most popular in the current month. As far as I can tell, I have to manually change the date in the sidebar (or whatever) file and re-upload each month after a few posts have gone up. Also, make sure you're using the most up-to-date version, I think Alex updated this plugin recently. I'm on version 1.3b3.

','','200802'); ?>

'5' is the amount of posts I want to show, '200802' means it will show the most popular in February 2008.

Alternatively, Coffee2Code might be able help you out with their Customizable Post Listings plugin. I don't know if it will show the most popular entries as I haven't read the blurb yet, but it looks pretty thorough.

a return over 3 years of 8%, guaranteed!

I think "guaranteed" is perhaps a bit presumptuous, but Dubai does seem like a nice place to live. Unfortunately though, every nook and cranny on this planet has good and bad points, and it comes down to which ones you're willing to sacrifice for the greater good or which ones you can live with. I would love to live somewhere warmer but I'd have to organise a job elsewhere, something which becomes tricky if I don't speak the local language. And I'm pretty certain that grumpy bastards are everywhere; you can't escape them. ;-)

I have a schedule for most posts and pre-publish things in advance when I can. As you say, it frees up time for other things, like sleep, or more writing. Some of my post series can be scheduled for months in advance, like my Caption Contests, currently sorted until June. Aside from pre-publishing, I also follow a schedule during race weekends (my site is F1-related) so my readers and myself know what to expect.
