» Do you learn foreign languages? Come here!  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Josh.

I'm in India right now, in Chennai, learning my native language of Tamil. I've always been able to speak it fluently, but my vocabulary is limited. I know enough to stumble around the meaning, but I end up reverting to English, or asking my aunt to translate.

It's hellishly difficult to pronounce some of the Tamil characters, lots of tongue work. But as a result, Spanish was a piece of cake when I took it in high school.

Ah, and Spanish, I started learning when I was in high school, it's a wonderful language and I like the culture.

Nope, it's supposed to be serious. Bollywood's notorious for its crappy copies of Hollywood films. Check out the Fight Club: Members Only trailer (or wallpaper, if you're on dialup like me :). Misses the entire point of the original Hollywood version, even.

I'm Indian, not a big Bollywood fan. In my opinion, Bollywood is too conservative to make films that have the impact that Hollywood films have.

Still, I can understand why so many Indians love it. It's the center of culture and it's where we get most our music. We (i.e. Indians) don't take our films too seriously, so it's all in good fun.

I've tried reading Catch 22, but it just doesn't click. It's one of the few non-school books I've given up reading. I'll try it when I get a little older.

» What Have You Finished Reading Recently?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by mmecunia.

Invisible Man is one of my favorites; it's messy, confusing, and filled with messages, just like life.

I hate to be a stickler about grammar, but it's Invisible Man, not The Invisible Man. The former is a powerful work by Ralph Ellison, the latter is a forgettable sci-fi short by H.G. Wells (Ahem, my biased opinion, of course).

I just finished The Clockwork Orange, which has also penetrated my list of favorites. Before that, I was reading Stranger in a Strange Land, and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

Asimov is great stuff, but I feel his language can be bland sometimes.

while those lazy vain people buying the pill lose their health and money right along with their weight

I don't think that people are as stupid as you make them out to be. When we learned about the bad stuff associated with smoking, a lot of people decided to quit. If someone makes a bad product, people realize this and they stop using it.

Point is, even without this artificial moral argument against money, we have ways of regulating ourselves.

And global warming is a relatively new problem. Before you attribute global warming to the faults of our society, let us react properly.

I like Scrivener for the Mac. It costs money, but I think it's definitely worth it if you write a lot of papers. It's geared toward the professional writer, but I could definitely see it used to write a PhD paper.

It's Mac-only, though, so that could kill the deal immediately.

» Are All Christians Fundamentalists?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Gnorb.

I disagree wholeheartedly with that definition, because it fails to take into account the wealth of tradition and community that contribute to my religious experience. That said, I'm leaving the discussion, because these things generally go on forever, and you can't change anybody's mind over the internet :p

Oh, and I'm not insanely religious, but it has filled a few gaps in my life, and I see the value.

» Are All Christians Fundamentalists?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Gnorb.

For me, religion is only partly about the holy book. It's a combination of the ceremonies, the gatherings, the role models, the mythology. I do believe accept evolution. I also believe in gods. I can't reconcile my views of gods and of science, and I don't feel a need to.

Religion's like art. If I had a beautiful piece of music that allowed me to focus and complete my work quickly, would you tell me to stop listening? Maybe there's no scientific basis for my love of music, maybe it's irrational, would you thrust your scientific truth upon me?

It's just two facets of my life, I don't analyze every line of the books, I just know that there are pieces I like, and pieces I don't like.

I think fundamentalists are people who force their views upon others. You can believe that a purple bunny will kill everyone tomorrow at midnight, just don't wake me up to tell me about it.

There was a speaker at TED that suggested we have a religion class, that focused on teaching facts about religions, no moral lessons. Just facts. I liked that idea, would promote open-mindedness and maybe people would see the not-so-antiscience, peaceful side of religion.

» Money, is it wrong?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by edub.

Under a capitalist economy, spending money benefits everyone. So even if you don't donate to charities or do volunteer work, your purchases still keep the economy flowing.

Bragging about your money is wrong.
Thinking that you're better than someone with less money is wrong.
Spending money to purchase things that make you happy? That's fine.

Haven't Italians gotten mad at Scorsese for his portrayal of Italians as gangsters? I think it's a silly reaction, but let's not pretend that westerners haven't been outraged at silly things.

And anybody that thinks either the west or the east deserves to get 'wiped out' is out of grips with reality, in my opinion.

That said, the movie shouldn't change. Obviously. And dare I chance a guess that most Iranians/Persians would agree?

» Facing Religious Bigotry  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Bartoneus.

If you take out the polite terms, it's plain immature. The difference between a child and an adult is that the child sees the world in black and white, and the adult can recognize gray areas.

But hey, I wouldn't go as far as saying that all or even most religious people are this way. Most of the people I meet [mostly teens, so my analysis is kind of tilted] prefer to separate the religious-self and the secular-self.

I live in a relatively liberal suburb, but in our slice of society, there's even a kind of stigma associated with religious people. I have friends who will say that religion is backwards and irrational. Obviously, this kind of thinking isn't helpful either.

I guess it comes down to 'live and let live'.

@blogosquare: I like Scott's plugins, but it's limited in terms of formatting my code. In my design, each category section will have a corresponding image, output using a tag. Since Scott doesn't actually invoke the loop, the post_image won't work.

I think I'm making this unnecessarily complicated. Here's an image of what I'm trying to do:
LayoutImage.

I'm trying to do something very similar to what Derek does in his blog [thanks for the link] with the categories, so I'll email him. It's not in any of his public themes, though.

I'm just worried that running 7 loops (could become 9 loops if we decide to add 2 sections to the paper next year) could be PHP overload. Ideally, I'd like to do something like:
FOREACH $category SELECT most_recent_post -> $arrayOfPosts;
echo $arrayOfPosts[0];
echo $arrayOfPosts[1];
(etc.)

Wordpress: Featured post and one post from each category

Programming Community — Posted: Jun. 21, 2007  ...   Last By: mukundlakshman @ 1 year ago

I have a bit of code, but it seems horrendous. I have to include 7 loops - eight categories and a 'featured' post with some special CSS styling.

Can I simplify this? Can I pull the posts out of the SQL database directly, to avoid all the loops, and will that speed up page load times? Is there a plugin that already does some/most of this? Should I be using another CMS? My layout is as follows:

Layout

So, to clarify, each of the 'Category' sections will have only the most recent post from that category. The relevant snip of code:

while (have_posts()) : the_post();
$feature = get_the_category(); $feature = $feature[0]->cat_ID; ?>

$arr = array(1, 2); // Grouped into sets of two categories.
foreach ($arr as $catno) {
if ($feature == $catno) { $offset = 1; } else { $offset = 0; }
query_posts('cat=' . $catno. '&showposts=1&offset=' .$offset);
while (have_posts()) : the_post();
?>

And the full code. I'm not afraid to play with PHP, but I don't know Wordpress or its hooks (aside from the basic template tags stuff).

Thank you guys, this is my first note!

» Brand Loyalty  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by LorriM.

Cars, certainly.

And I have many relatives that swear by Sony products - they purchase tech stuff based on brand, rather than the quality of the product itself. Which is annoying to me, because I shop 23027302 websites before making any tech purchase, but they're satisficers, and I'm a maximizer with respect to tech.

So yeah, Brand Loyalty is necessary so we don't drive ourselves crazy trying to purchase the best product everytime?

We have less experience, so that's a disadvantage on the deployment, business, efficiency, end of things.

Technology moves fast. With web development, most of the learning materials are online for free [9rules, AListApart, other Blogs, del.icio.us, ThePirateBay-Photoshop], so it's accessible. That evens out the playing field a bit.

Kids have an advantage in developing software for other kids - Facebook and Yaqqr are examples.

But we're also occupied with high school, so that's a big, big disadvantage.

» You want to know why I f*cking hate the rap culture?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Hedimac.

The rap music the students in my school listen to (and blare extremely loudly from their cars) have messages for listeners of violence and disrespect towards women. I don't want to give or promote that message to young teenagers.

I don't think media (movies, videogames, music, books) causes violence, sexism, rape, etc. What exactly will you do, armed with the knowledge that Snoop Dogg coaches a football team?

Good criticism. I agree with hthth. I'd also add a footer of some sort to let us know the page has ended. I scrolled down and my first reaction was "Did my internet disconnect again? Has this loaded?"

Definitely lose the font. There are much more readable fonts out there, don't try something really flashy for the body text. How many websites do you visit regularly that use a quirky font for their article text? (Stick to the vanilla Arial/Helv, Tahoma, Verdana, Trebuchet MS, etc.)
