Tim Russert Dies Of Heart Attack

Commentary Community — Posted: Jun. 13, 2008  ...   Last By: Tony @ 5 months ago

This is really sad news for anyone involved in journalism.

An ambulance rushed to the studio and a source at the network said Russert was briefly revived. But, the broadcasting lion apparently passed away either on the way or at a local Washington D.C. hospital.

My father-in-law passed away a few short months ago in exactly the same manner -- sudden heart attack, little that could have been done. What a blow to his NBC and real-life families.

Computing the Ten Millionth Bernoulli Number In Mathematica

Science Community — Posted: Jun. 13, 2008

But a few years ago I programmed a quite different algorithm into Mathematica. Instead of directly computing the Bernoulli numbers using a recurrence relation, I instead used a trick recently suggested by Bernd Kellner: computing Bernoulli numbers by computing the Riemann zeta function.
It’s the integrated nature of Mathematica that makes things like this practical. Without Mathematica, one has to use the simplest building blocks to make efficient algorithms. But with Mathematica, one can take for granted access to efficient very-high-level operations—like computing Riemann zeta functions.

Ron Paul To End Campaign, Shift Gears

Politics Community — Posted: Jun. 13, 2008  ...   Last By: Ozone42 @ 5 months ago

It's time. It's difficult to see him go but this is what his campaign needs to do now and I think it affords him some additional visibility with his new Libertarian-minded group called The Campaign For Liberty.

I was a big Ron Paul supporter early on, before the early primaries and caucuses, and it was tough to see him do so poorly in states like New Hampshire where the Libertarian slant is more pronounced. I never anticipated Paul winning the Republican nomination but I did enjoy his thoughts on shrinking the government and going back to traditional foreign policy.

Great Article Discussing The Cost Of A Bugfix In Webkit

Programming Community — Posted: Jun. 13, 2008

Every fix doesn’t call for a blog post, but this one deserves it. It all started when Jonathon Jongsma found a way to make text disappear in QtWebKit on May 27th. So he raised a bug. He and I started working on fixing it. We rapidly found that WebKitGtk was also affected, but it was unreproducible on the Mac port.

He ends up talking to the engineer at Apple who committed the code that ended up causing the bug and they fix it together. Pretty interesting read.

Has John McCain ever said anything that made you sit back and say, "damn, that's eloquent", or, "I agree with you"? It's almost every day that something comes up that makes me think McCain is just a complete idiot pandering to the 28% of America who he's probably already got sewn up.

Movable Type Security Trumps WordPress, Not Much Of A Newsflash

Blogging Community — Posted: Jun. 13, 2008  ...   Last By: davidhayes @ 5 months ago

I just left a comment over at Anil Dash's entry at the Movable Type blog about this and I think it's worth reiterating here at Wriging for others to see.

The problems that WordPress is currently having with security really need to be scrutinized because huge security issues like this one are a bad thing. WP has released an update to address that issue but the bottom line is that if you allowed users to register on your site they could potentially modify their cookie and trick your WP blog into thinking they were authenticated into a different account and then gain administrative rights over your site. Ouch. Let's hope you downloaded that update.

Wow, no text messages at all? That's totally ridiculous. I don't even send that many text messages (about a dozen or so per month) and now I have to pay an extra $5 just for that small quantity. Paul I have no idea how much your messaging habits would cost you but it sounds prohibitively expensive and outrageous.

Hypnosis - myths and facts

Science Community — Posted: Jun. 11, 2008  ...   Last By: Scrivs @ 5 months ago

When I was in college there was a big class event in the gymnasium where a hypnotist was brought in and was going to entertain us with some antics. He had people up on stage hugging and crawling around the ground and stuff so there has to be some truth to what he was doing. Right?

Has anyone else been to or seen the effects of a hypnotist? I know someone who was so afraid of the dentist that she had to be hypnotized into going, and it worked.

Apple has said that certain downloads that are larger than 10MB will need to be made at your computer and then side-loaded into your iPhone, so I see no reason why you can't "deauthorize" your old iPhone and "authorize" a new iPhone once you have it, just like you can do to iPods and music purchased via the iTunes Music Store. I really don't think there will be a lock-in scenario.

The Phone Business Is Forever Changed

Business Community — Posted: Jun. 9, 2008  ...   Last By: fuscom @ 5 months ago

The new iPhone 3G that Steve Jobs announced today is the coffin the existing mobile phone industry will be buried in. I'm calling it.

There's no doubt in consumer's minds that the iPhone is the king of the hill of the cellphone industry. If someone is looking to buy a new phone then they're probably coveting the iPhone in the back of their mind. This is still a probably notion as the iPhone hasn't reached the ubiquitous status like the iPod, but it's getting there. If you're in the market for an MP3 player then the iPod is definitely on your mind. Soon, it will be exactly the same for the iPhone.

Apple has entered the most crowded marketplace in the world and was ready from the start to start making billions. They didn't half-ass their first entry into the cellphone world, they went full speed ahead and Jobs announced that the technology in the original iPhone was at least 5 years ahead. Cellphone executives laughed. Palm CEO Ed Colligan has this to say in his now-famous quote:

"We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone," he said. "PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They're not going to just walk in."

Well Apple did just that, they walked in. And now, with the new iPhone coming out in a month, they're putting everyone on notice that it's Apple's game to lose. Nobody else can win it, Apple can only lose it.

How? Well with the new $199 price point they just put the iPhone's price right up against any other phone you could get with a 2-year contract (in the U.S.) and it's an unbelievably attractive offer. Get the phone you actually want for a price that you're planning to spend. Before, no matter how badly consumers wanted the iPhone, the price point was not what they were willing to spend. Now, you can get what you covet for a good price.

The new iPhone is going to kill. Everybody else.

» iPhone 3G: July 11th...whaaaaaaa?  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Tyme.

Oli, I don't think contract commitments are as prevalent in the UK as they are in the United States but please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have no problem signing into another 24-month commitment with AT&T if it means I get a cheaper, newer, iPhone. In the U.S. it's rare when you don't have to sign-up for a longer term contract when buying a new phone so people are simply used to it. It's not a big deal for me.

» New iPhone 3G Ad  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Scrivs.

The ad is sick but I'm surprised they didn't put the $199 price point up at the end. They said "half the price" in the ad but it seems like that price is a bigger selling point than it simply having 3G, at least to potential iPhone buyers.

A lot of things are moving over to "The Cloud" which makes the type of computer you use not matter as much anymore. With data storage happening on a server you can't see and your main business functions potentially occurring within a web application, for many businesses the type of computer you use is mattering less.

More Info On Google Android Using Java, But Not Really

Programming Community — Posted: Jun. 5, 2008  ...   Last By: Scrivs @ 6 months ago

After reading this clip about how difficult and costly it is to deploy a J2ME application in the United States, things are finally starting to click in my head regarding why Google built Android the way it did.

The high-level concept behind Android development is that the syntax is Java but it doesn't use a Java virtual machine to make the applications. There's a great article about this and here's a quote:

Android uses the Dalvik virtual machine, which is a register-based VM whereas the Java VM is stack-based. Neither a specification nor the source code for Dalvik are available yet, but it’s clear that the bytecodes are quite different from Java bytecodes. There is a translation tool from JVM bytecode (.class files) to Dalvik bytecode (.dex files) but it is a build-time tool only. JVM bytecodes are never loaded onto an Android device.

Google chose Java syntax because of its familiarity with developers — if you're developing apps for a mobile phone then you're probably already using Java. However Google was incredibly smart in that they didn't want to deal with all the hassles that are involved with licensing the Java virtual machine. What are those hassles?

Well, for starters the deal cycle can take about 12-18 months. And not only that, you have to convince the operator that it is even worth talking to you... And while I hate to admit it, it's quite reasonable... Operators (or carriers as they are called in the US) get a huge amount of noise from companies wanting to launch their services. Content managers there have more hits than Google has... So, even if you're a start-up with a brilliant solution, they will have a hard time getting you in unless you have some proof of getting revenues or an impressive userbase or an impressive brand etc.

Oh, and the worst part?

[...] and there's also the fact that they will take about 50% of your revenues...

So Google wanted the code to be familiar but total control over the packaging, deployment, and future revenues. By using Java syntax but writing their own virtual machine to execute it, they got the best of all worlds.

Obama Puts The Screws To Joe Lieberman

Politics Community — Posted: Jun. 5, 2008

I hate Joe Lieberman. He should be kicked out of the Democratic caucus.

Furthermore, during a Senate vote Wednesday, Obama dragged Lieberman by the hand to a far corner of the Senate chamber and engaged in what appeared to reporters in the gallery as an intense, three-minute conversation.

While it was unclear what the two were discussing, the body language suggested that Obama was trying to convince Lieberman of something and his stance appeared slightly intimidating.

Using forceful, but not angry, hand gestures, Obama literally backed up Lieberman against the wall, leaned in very close at times, and appeared to be trying to dominate the conversation, as the two talked over each other in a few instances.

Tony Rezko Convicted, Obama's Statement On It A Bit Odd

Commentary Community — Posted: Jun. 5, 2008

I don't doubt that Obama is saddened by his mentor's conviction, but the rest of his statement is from outer space. "This isn't the Tony Rezko I knew." Deja vu, anyone? I could swear I've heard it somewhere before. Sure enough--the racist, anti-American Rev. Wright whom we've all seen on video wasn't the Rev. Wright whom Obama knew for 20 years, either. And the outrageously bigoted Father Pfleger wasn't the Pfleger whom Obama assiduously supported with earmarks--another form of political corruption.

Yes, I just quoted Power Line. I think pigs are flying.
