Maybe the authors write those characters after "that guy" who always hook up with his friends at home and the author is constantly trying to figure out how to be "that guy" but can't.

Who is "That Guy" in Anime?

Entertainment Community — Posted: Dec. 11, 2007  ...   Last By: Michael @ 11 months ago

Okay I have a question for you regular anime watchers. Who the heck is "That Guy" in anime? In Fullmetal Alchemist it was Scar's older brother, in Honey and Clover it was Morita/Harada...the point is that these characters are all characters that the main character usually looks up too...kinda.

Common dialogue: "and I saw his eyes, yes they looked different from a normal person's eyes."

In the case of Morita/Harada, he is a man who has things come easily to him, in Naruto that person is Sasuke. But the one thing that constantly ties these characters together is that they are always admired by the main character and that you never really get to hear the story told from that character's point of view.

This of course has a weird implication. Who the fuck are they referring to and are these authors secretly aspiring to be like their awesome admirers? Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

I agree with Cooper. I just took a class on this and you can only sue someone for libel if you report it as news. But what do I know?

Okay random question but did the diologue from Halo 3 seem kind of anime-ish? Is anyone with me?

Let me also say this. The best of us make mistakes. Some of the coolest people I know fall for shit like "what Scrivs said" numerous amounts of time. That doesn't make them bad people. In my experience it is better to let them learn their lesson.

This sorta reminds me of something that I saw on College Humor. Back on the subject. Ya know I think a lot of the women in this forum can really relate to situations like this but I am guessing that a lot of men here can attest to being the "one she's not interested in so she will see through your lie" sort of thing.

Anyway enjoy the video.

Remember folks, it is not what you say but rather how you say it.

» Why do you believe us?  ...  Last Reply: 12 months ago by Vidar.

I know what Scrivs is talking about and it's okay as long as it's done in a non malicious fashion. My simple answer is that men like us aren't supposed to be 100% factual or truthful. Just entertainment. It's what we men are.

Scoopersmith: Perhaps you are correct. Facebook is turning into the new MySpace. But MySpace is successful despite the bugs, spam and design problems. So in effect we will probably see Facebook turn into a super MySpace because they won't have the same structural problems as MySpace.

Btw coopersmith, you're totally that girl in my social networking class. Welcome to 9rules. :)

I see Western culture slowly drift over to an eastern way of thinking. There is a reason why Japanese culture appeals to groups of people in western society.

So no I don't see anime adapting to incorporate western values because I believe that there is a huge enough market in America for eastern values and myths. I see Japanese social trends as a precursor to that will eventually catch on in America. I don't know how this happens but for some reason it does.

I don't have any strong evidence for this but you can kind of feel it in the air. Talk to someone people who are interested in Asian culture and you can tell that they are passionate about it.

Why do snobbish people like to go to Sushi Restaurants (I love sushi)? Asian influence in interior design. Gnob mentioned Wired's fascination with Japanese school girls. (Take that anyway you want.) Devotion to the group rather than the individual. These values/great food are very attractive to some people in the competitive western world.

It would be cool to see western cartoons adopt anime style storytelling. Some of it is gosh darn entertaining and clever.

A Question About Facebook Apps

Web Community — Posted: Dec. 4, 2007  ...   Last By: Scrivs @ 12 months ago

I'm going to throw out a question about Facebook App "spam". And I suppose I'm going to do a lot of stereotyping and generalizing but here it goes.

Do you guys have a lot of eccentric friends. I love them to death but I do get a number of app invites from them every once in a while and no

  • Zombie Hug
  • Pirate Fight
  • Superpoke
  • And the list could go on. Now I'm not trying to pin this whole App problem on one group of people but is it possible that the invasive app problem is only caused by one type of app and that the reason why other people aren't as annoyed with facebook is because they don't have interaction with that "app group"?

And I'm talking super specific here folks. The Zombie/Pirate/Superpoke type apps are pretty invasive and are almost virus like so I don't think that it is anyone's fault but it is something to think about.

Folks what do you think? Oh and the Quiz app is pretty invasive as well. People could be inviting people to the app without even knowing it.

If I had to take a guess, I would have to say that Ron Paul is a candidate that fights for the little guy and unfortunately, people like that rarely win.

About Iran. You got me there. The chart is flawed in the sense that it does not show the entire stance. Yes Right On you are correct. From what I can tell, Iran should not be invaded but there should be something done about the Iranian government.

But my initial impression of Ron Paul. Sorry guys I still don't like him. I think Rudy would probably do a better job than him.

I mean let's look at this seriously:
    http://www.2decide.com/table.htm

    Ron Paul is against:
    Gun background checks.
    Assault weapons ban

His foreign policy plan also sounds scary. He doesn't want to do anything about Iran...the list could go on.

» CNN YouTube Debates: The Republicans  ...  Last Reply: 12 months ago by RightOn.

A lot of what he says sounds radical. Reduce the size of the government? Legalize pot? I'm not saying that what he says is bad but how does he expect to win? Those are all pretty radical stances and I would be surprised if he even makes it. A good portion of his funding comes from online support.

Rudy sounds like a man who can get the job done. Obama might have a lot of out there supporters but I think the man is a lot more reasonable that most people think.

» Facebook is over in 2010  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by Tha-Flash.

Yeah I see what you're saying but they'll probably get away with it. I mean Facebook is still relatively safe. Are people leaving because of the privacy issues? I thought it was because of the applications?

The funny thing is that people are joining facebook because it is a norm not necessarily because it is a private walled garden.

» CNN YouTube Debates: The Republicans  ...  Last Reply: 12 months ago by RightOn.

Righton: McCain does seem kind of grumpy. Ron Paul seems to be kind of crazy if you ask me.

» Facebook is over in 2010  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by Tha-Flash.

You won't get anyone to beat facebook. They have their users, and I don't see them loosing any soon. Tyme: where are these people who are leaving?

Everyone and I mean everyone I know uses and maintains a facebook account. The only people who have talked about getting rid/reducing their account are two people in my itec class and that is it.

Would you call AOL unsuccessful? Of all the major blogs out there, AOL's TMZ is the only one that gets real coverage on TV. Almost everyone uses AIM, and tons of people are still subscribed to their mail service.

I thought Rudy Giuliani sounded pretty smart. The other candidates didn't sound as great. The debate was pretty good in my opinion or maybe I haven't seen enough good debates.

@cooper: from a financial standpoint maybe they do. if online news is cutting into their bottom line and more people are likely to watch exclusive entertainment news then more power to them.

as long as we're getting the news in the end. in a way it is ironic. the internet revolutionaries that said TV news was terrible, self fulfilled the prophecy. that's just one interesting point of view

» It's time for somebody to discuss the difference between real news and fake news  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Michael.

What if, the TV stations were being forced to run more sensational/entrainment news to compensate for the explosion of news that is appearing on the web? With more competition, news corporations are bound to consolidate and shore up their defenses to save their own bottom line.

» It's time for somebody to discuss the difference between real news and fake news  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Michael.

Just because television stations cover entertainment news doesn't necessarily mean that American's are becoming less news conscious. Or should I say, that we get our news in private and in different ways.

Television represents the superficial surface part of American Culture...the popular culture that keeps us connected but in reality there are tons of smart people in our life.

My professor took a poll of our class and found that the majority of the class did not read the paper. When given a current events quiz, the class was able to answer all but one question.

I think that that it is dangerous for people to assume that the person to their left is "dumb" just because they follow entertainment news. Knowledge isn't just facts and current events.
