» Makes Me Not Want To Fly Any Time Soon...  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by Lasha.

After reading all of these comments and imagining all the thousands of other people who have had negative flying experiences completely turns me off and away from flying. My flying experiences has been quite pleasant in terms of landing and such, but I've had some intense mid-flight scares with wind and bad weather.

I really hope that airplane and airport technologies get better and better over time to help improve the safety of flying, and so forth. It's also important to have very well trained pilots, as exemplified from the posts above.

Sexual immortality. Sounds kinda "wow," but quite true. Haha.

» Why are rounded corners so attractive  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by wemakethings.

I agree. The reason why we are so attracted to round edges is more of a psychological thing. It's nice to know what types of "vibes" different design elements can provoke from site viewers, and as a designer, it's most important for us to work with what we know about the human psyche.

On my site, I tried to give it a little mix of both edgy and roundedness so there'd be a good balance between the two - everything is a work in progress though. Adding multiple elements gradually makes things a bit difficult to maintain, but through proper planning, it should be okay, hehe.

That's pretty sweet. If you have time, let us know how it all turns out with the EeePC, and how it serves as an organization tool.

» Organizers, Planners, Calendars  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by Lasha.

Hmm, I don't know why more people didn't respond to this, but there are so many great ways of staying organized, keeping track of things, and staying on track yourself. I wrote about keeping a calendar and such on my blog, so hopefully you'll find that helpful.

Basically, what I do to keep track of lots of data is keep both an electronic and written forms of to-dos, events, reminders, and etc. The things you want to have written down and posted in places you frequent at, are the very important things. You can keep an electronic form of an organizer like a PDA, Phone (in my case, an iPhone), or if you want to go extreme, a laptop.

There are certainly benefits to the fact that you are already used to using a hand-written diary/organizer to keep track of things. I had it pretty bad at first cause I never wrote anything down before. One thing that you might question is rather or not you should carry an electronic one, or a written planner, OR both. That's one thing you would have to experiment with and see what you're most comfortable with. I carry my iPhone everywhere, naturally, and sometimes I bring along a small notepad for quicker and more instantaneous note taking.

Hope this helps, even though it's a bit late. :)

» Can you do 700?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by auburn.

I've been into these types of athletics for quite a few years now, and I can tell you that what you're experiencing, Shadowsun, is completely normal. When you exercise those certain muscles, it takes time for the muscle tissue to repair, this resulting you in doing less pushups and situps the following couple of days. Keep at is, and you'd be able to work your way up to 700 quite easily.

Jogging is definitely helpful in this case as it adds to proper blood flow throughout your body, and increases your stamina. Try to go for higher reps every 4-5 days, if not, every week. For example, I started out only being able to do around 8 pullups. Within one month of doing pullups for about 3 minutes a day, I reached 18 pullups. Now imagine if you actually put more time into it? Yep. You can do it in a breeze!

If I knew I couldn't fail at an endeavor, I would probably start a company enforcing "green" development in every way possible. Make Green Energy streamlines and CHEAP, and easy for everyone to get. On top of it being good for the environment, I think it's just cool, too. :)

Hey Trevor. I just started going to the gym again - this is my 4th day, and so far so good. It's pretty much been on and off for me, but this time I really do plan on keeping a steady pace and develop myself physically and mentally.

I am particularly interested MMA (mixed martial arts) and I'm developing a personalized a plan of workouts and exercises to have my body conditioned for it. I don't plan on competing anytime soon, but I do practice Jiu Jitsu a bit.

For a few months, I've had a pretty steady regime and stopped only due to other complications in life at that time. I find it the best if you had a friend you could work out with. You two can serve as motivational source for each other and achieve satisfying results just as I have.

You know, I heard that once you maintain something like this for a month, it becomes a natural thing and not a hassle to do anymore. It's just something that you do, and not have to "force" yourself to do it. I did start going back to the gym because I noticed myself slipping out of shape, and that I was paying for a gym membership (contracted) that I wasn't attending to! So....yea. :)

» Earth Hour, Making a Difference 1 Hour at a Time  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by Lasha.

@Lelia: Thoughts well stated, thank you.

@Shadowsun7: You bring up an extremely valid point about this whole environment thing not only being about the earth's temperature rising a bit, but more on a widespread scale as you mentioned. Wildlife conservation and pollution (which technically contributes to "global warming", no?) are just more reasons to begin acting towards change, and away from neglect.

I must say one thing though...After observing lots of evidence from both sides of the pool regarding the validity of global warming, I've been lead to believe that global warming IS happening, but at a rather slow speed. This is why a lot of people believe that it's just a natural phase that the Earth is going through. And as Al Gore said, "just because we can't see it, smell it, or taste it, doesn't mean it's not there."

Our world today has the largest and dirtiest population the Earth has ever seen, and still growing dangerously fast, for the worst. The abuse the Earth is taking pumping hundreds of millions of pounds of oil and gas are not causing it harm? Honestly, do the millions of tons of CO2 vanish magically with a wave of a wand? Think about the amount of *junk* that goes into our landfills, the air that we breathe, and the contamination that's occurring in our seas, oceans, and other bodies of water. I don't mean to sound like a fanboy on crack or something, but if we think that global warming is not really happening, we will probably end up falling in a hole that will be really hard to climb out of.

There are so many starving nations in the world, yet so many fail to acknowledge or care about it - but there are a few of those that have stood up and realized the reality of it. A lot of us are gifted with the fact that we will probably be born and raised to an elderly age without ever experiencing hunger, or the lack of shelter. This, to me, is like our weakening environment (not just global warming). We don't see it, or experience it in any way, other than the media, this we tend to put it off to the side.

Maybe I'm just motivated for the wrong reasons to make a difference and change myself, and hopefully others, for the better. I come from a very poor country that hasn't experienced stability of any sort for a very, very long time. I was raised for the first few main years of my life in the types of places people would want to hang themselves in. I hate it so very much every time I hear about these terrible situations in the world, and would just hope that more people take some sort of action. Every so often I come to realize the opportunity that I've been given in America, and think back into the past of how things used to be, and how they are now. I also think of the possibilities of how I could have turned out to be if I spent over a dozen years in Georgia, instead of New York. But then again, that's just me. Just my 2 cents, sorry.

» Most beautiful female photography  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by tylerc66.

Okay, are we supposed to post links to what we think is the most beautiful?

I think that what we think is the most beautiful is quite relative to our tastes, cultures, and just what makes our minds tick when observing. There are a lot of female photographers that are talented in the art, located on flickr.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ndybisz/ - This is Miss Aniela, she has an amazing talent with post-processing her photography. I love her work.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ilinas/ - This is Ilina, also very creative with the use of lighting, angles, and artistry in her sets.

Both of these are photographers are very talented in my opinion, and can serve as motivation to those looking to create beautiful compositions. :)

Well, okay. You have a damn good point about "feeling good" while being green and all, but I was referring to that in a more general sense. What I meant is that, generally, when people go green, and keep it stable, they save money! Of course, no one on earth "likes" being disconnected even for a minute against their will, especially in cities like Sydney. But hey, I guess we will eventually reach a time where people will consider it a "norm" to be conservative or "green" with the things we do on a daily basis. And yes, I also do agree that discomfort would have to be confronted by many, but humans are known to adapt. :)

» Earth Hour, Making a Difference 1 Hour at a Time  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by Lasha.

Well, okay. I didn't read that document in its entirety, but it concluded that it was difficult to measure the real effect of Earth Hour in New South Wales. It also said that the use of electricity compared to times throughout the day itself wasn't significant, but I didn't catch anything in that PDF that mentioned the fact that there are more lights being used at night when the sun sets, as compared the rest of the day when there is daylight.

Although, it is indeed interesting that at 7:30 the use of electricity went really high, but that might have been coincidental for that day. Still, all scientific notes aside, you can't disregard the fact that something like this was pulled off in the first place, and whatever electricity was saved, even if it was so small.

Shadowsun7, I definitely agree that they should be applauded because this just goes to show that there are people who are genuinely interested in the bettering of our environment. I believe that this is just the beginning of more and more countries taking part in something extraordinary, as it is an effort to spread knowledge of the benefits of being green, saving energy, and feeling good while doing it.

Honestly, what's the point of reading an article that negates the idea of even having an EarthHour? Regardless the scientific results, it can and WILL eventually reach a state where shutting off lights for one hour will actually make a big difference.

Earth Hour, Making a Difference 1 Hour at a Time

Science Community — Posted: Feb. 3, 2008  ...   Last By: Lasha @ 9 months ago

I was browsing around the web doing my usual "green stuff" hunt for my little database that I'm building, and I came across Earth Hour! It was kind of interesting to hear about at first, but then I realized how serious it was. I recently blogged about EarthHour, talking about who is participating, the positives of it, and how the whole world can collaborate together to make a difference, and I've been greatly motivated.

www.EarthHour.org

I think it would be really exciting for more large cities around the world to shut down for one hour! All the energy that could be saved would amount to a pretty significant decrease on CO2 emissions, but like I said, we all have to do this together. Watch the video on the website by clicking the "About" page, and see what has motivated me even more.

I hope you guys enjoy this, and help spread the word about Earth Hour, and just being environmentally aware in general. It would make everyone happy by saving on energy costs, all while putting a gentle smile on Mother Earth. Haha.

» Is it accurate to use the term "Web 3.0"?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by Johnny.

You know, I used to be totally excited about this whole "Web 2.0" and "Web 3.0" things and so on, but I realized that all it is, is just a buzzword for people to use as a marketing tool, and an excuse for people to attempt things design or development wise (which may not always be a bad thing).

As mentioned, I think it'd be the best for us to concentrate on developing awesome content, and designing with the best of our abilities to make everything as efficient as possible, easy to use, aesthetically pleasing (although, relative), and we'll just gradually fade into new stages of the web. We still don't know what discoveries people may learn of that'll change the way we work on the web!

You know, a while ago I actually forced myself to believe that Web 3.0 would be the age where all of our applications would be accessed online through the web, without ever having the need to install anything anymore. Haha. Although I believe that this specific stage will eventually be reached, it won't have a direct identifier (such as Web X.X).

I've been doing web design for a few years now, and now did I only start adapting these "fads" of styles, and ways of working on the web - and I really do love it! There are some amazing pierces of work out there. Staying up to date with all this stuff without having to rely on terminologies to describe what you're doing is the best way to be, I think. Hmm, and another thought: I guess it's not bad to keep track of the things we're doing by these kinds of terms - we just have to avoid things going overload. lol.

» LOST Season 4 Premiere Tonight! Predictions?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Heliophage.

LOST is the only show I really ever got in to - like watched almost every episode of, every week. Personally, I would also like to see what happened before they got off the island and all, and what happened to all the characters (quickly summed up). We still don't know the whole deal with Walt, etc. I can imagine this season being REALLY good and I'm totally hyped! It would also be interesting to see the development of "the others" since they've all left, etc.

» Say goodbye to SEO as you know it, say hello to LSI  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by ivanpw.

Why do I feel that this is something that should already be a part of what "SEO" is already, today? This is nothing so extraordinary to make it deserve the title of being a whole new way of optimization. People who follow the current SEO rules and have properly set up websites shouldn't worry about it, unless the writing on the blog/etc. is terrible and worded too much for keyword density. Let's see how this new "LSI" thing is integrated in the time to come.

Plus, if we were to say "goodbye" to our current trends of SEO, imagine the fury and retaliation of web against the big guys like Google and Yahoo! Search engines would just have to adapt seamlessly, and so would we.

» Whats is Photography according to you...  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by PixlNinja.

Hello!

To me, Photography is many things. Yes, it is something that tells a story. Something that captures ones emotions and imagination. Something that strikes the viewer with awe, curiosity, and desire. Photography is about composing expressions. Capturing a moment of a lifetime. Sharing knowledge, information, and most of all, the beauty of our land, our home, our Earth.

I have been doing photography for a long time and only recently I got a DSLR (Canon 40D). I have yet to use it to its extents, and I have to buy more accessories, but I am loving every moment of it. Photography is something I plan on taking with me everywhere I go, when I travel around the world.
