JPhill: Rankings mean nothing. :) Not till the end of the season anyway. We'll see how that plays out. I'm thinking that the girls might be able to kick our asses this year though...

Fantasy Football '08

Sports Community — Posted: Jun. 17, 2008  ...   Last By: peroty @ 2 months ago

I know it's still a bit early, but I'm starting to gear up for the '08 season of Fantasy Football. I'm working on my rankings, considering who I might want on my team. Last year I was strong on defense, moderate on offense in one of my leagues. In the 9rules league last year, I placed second, which isn't bad, but there's room for a lot of improvement.

So, what about you? Still too early? And are we going to have another 9rules league? Because I'm ready for some re-matches.

Damn that was awesome. Seriously one of the most, if not the most, exciting round of golf I've seen.

Yea...they are tied right now. I'm so glad I get to watch this at work.

Now Tiger is up by 2. There's no doubt that Tiger is a great athlete. His knee has to be in pain right now, unless he has some nice pain killers.

» Some females are scandalous - no other word for it  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Tyme.

I have no sympathy. I guess you shouldn't have sex after only a few conversations without having some real proof of identity. If you are in the habit of doing so you might want to be more careful.

It is kind of stupid to have sex with someone you barely know but that doesn't mean you should stop and ask for ID everytime you want to have sex with someone. And it doesn't make the girl any less at fault. Yes, both guys were stupid and should have been more careful, but she shouldn't have lied in the first place.

Just because the guys rushed into having sex with her doesn't mean that they deserve what happened. If they had known she was underage, maybe they wouldn't have done it, or maybe they still would have. But she still shouldn't have lied about her age. It's not like she was 18 and she told them she was 21.

The most recent guy was trying to do the right thing by fessing up to the girl's father. It sounds like if he had known going into it that the girl was underage, he wouldn't have done it. But because she lied, and he didn't stop to think that maybe she was lying and she's really not 18, that he should be in jail?

So she lied, he believed her. I blame rests on the liar. The guy learned a huge lesson.

I'm going to buy it. I don't have one at the moment and since it is now cheaper, I will definitely be picking it up. Ir's more price competitive and it's something that I could better afford as opposed to the ones out now.

Of course, when I'm at work you have a birthday streamcast.

Happy Birthday Tyme. Sorry I can't make it.

That is beyond messed up.

I know a lot of kids, even here in hicksville, who do the same thing that the girl did and try to meet older guys. A lot of my sisters friends have blantantly lied about their age on MySpace. When I first got MySpace, I noticed that two of my younger sisters had lied about their age. I made them change it and now I monitor their profiles to make sure nothing out of the ordinary is going on.

I'm not blaming MySpace at all. People lie all the time and they'd do it with or without MySpace. It's just a bit sickening that kids feel the need to lie and try to grow up too quickly. Because being older is so much cooler.

The girls parents need to take some parenting classes or something. The girl needs some help too. Obviously if she's done this before, she's not going to change. Hopefully, some 18 year old dude knows how to use Google or watches the news so it won't happen again. It's obvious that the parents aren't going to do anything about it.

» The Talk  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Scrivs.

I don't have kids, but I do have younger sisters. My parents refuse to talk about sex, in a serious way, with them. As a result, my sisters often come to me with their questions. To be honest, it's a bit awkward, but my awkwardness doesn't really mean anything if talking to them about their questions means that they are going to be prepared and all that.

Like Tyme said, start off with something not relating to sex, and slowly build up to it. I did this with my sisters and now they just walk up to me and ask me a sex related question right from the start. Once in awhile, they'll ask me something that I either don't know or shocks me. If I don't know, I look it up myself, and if it shocks me, I'll tell them and explain it.

I showed them how to put a condom on a banana once. I figure if they knew that, they wouldn't have an excuse when whoever they were having sexual relations with didn't. My youngest sister is 13, and while she isn't sexually active yet, a lot of her friends are and some of her friends have even had kids already, so them being prepared is important.

Josh, that mixtape is totally awesome. I'm saving it, bookmarking it, and I'll be hunting down the artists' albums later.

If you put up another one please let us know. A note, an email ... anything. Whoosh this is good.

Thanks shadowsun. I'm working on putting up another one. I'm going to return to doing them monthly now.

I'd love a 50" HDTV, but right now I'd settle for any tv. I'd also love an iPhone, but I'm waiting for the new one to come out before I buy that. The Mac Air is on my list also. Really, I'm not thinking of that many gadgets at the moment since I'm saving up to get an apartment.

» Where Do You Find Your New Music?  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by shadowsun7.

jensized: I will keep that in mind. It probably won't be towards the end of the summer. I need to find an apartment and do all that good stuff before I really make a vacation. But I'll make sure to remember to give you a shout.

jensized: I wish I was hanging around in Memphis. I'm hoping to take a trip down that way this summer to visit some family friends and visit Graceland. I'm hoping to take an extra day or two to check out the music scenes in Nashville and Memphis. And I hadn't heard of Cory until I came across him on Muxtape. I've been listening to Lucero for awhile now though.

"A Thousand Splendid Suns" was good. It wasn't great, it could have been a lot better.

When books get a lot of hype, I purposefully don't read the book for awhile so I can forget about the reviews. Same goes with movies.

Anyway, I only have two of the books left to read that were on my list above. All of them I liked except for "Ghost". That was a horrible book. I had to force myself to finish reading it.

» What are you reading?  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by cooper.

I read "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and liked it. I haven't picked up "The Kite Runner" yet. It's on my to-read list though. I just keep forgetting to pick it up.

» What are you reading?  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by cooper.

I guess I've been reading a lot of comics lately, though.

I'm starting to get back into comics. Much to my surprise, I discovered that my library has a relatively awesome comic and graphic novel collection. They even have a little sheet by the section where you can write down requests.

Just resumed reading "The Audacity of Hope" and finally am almost finished.
After that I'll be reading Timothy Crouse's "The Boys on the Bus", which is about the press corps on the 1972 presidential election.
Hopefully by summer's end I'll have read Fareed Zakaria's latest "The Post-American World" and Yglesias' "Heads in the Sand."

I have your last two on my list. I've heard some good things about them. I will have to check out "The Boys on the Bus".

I was reading The Time Traveller's Wife, but now I'm at a loss for books. Am probably going to dive into John Irving's works, starting with Gawp.

Any suggestions?

The Cider House Rules. The movie was based on this book.

» Mountain Biking...anyone?  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by joshawesome.

I just started a couple of months ago. For about a month I stuck to flat bike trails and streets just to build up my stamina and to build up strength in my heart again. During the second month I ventured into some more wild terrain and now I'm starting to push myself harder.

Had my fair share of dislocated joints, bad scrapes and close calls, but yeah, that's what mountain biking is for me. Nothing like a little danger to make your life worth living.

Danger really does help in the living category. And I've broken over 50 bones in my life, so another won't kill me.

What are you reading?

Writing Community — Posted: May. 24, 2008  ...   Last By: cooper @ 5 months ago

I've become a huge fan of our local library. I've been checking out around ten books a week or so. That means that my book list is dwindling. Although I'm slowly building up my list through GoodReads.com.

I'm determined to break my reading record for a year, which tops out at 502 a couple of years ago. At the time, I included books I had to read for school and most of these were what people consider "classics".

Currently I'm reading the following:

  • Dispatches from The Edge - Anderson Cooper
  • The Audacity of Hope - Barack Obama
  • Child 44 - Tom Rob Smith
  • Ghost: A Novel - Alan Lightman
  • Armageddon in Retrospect - Kurt Vonnegut
  • Everything is Illuminated - Jonathan Foer

So, what is everyone reading? Or what have you read recently that sticks out or you thought was particularly good?

» Mountain Biking...anyone?  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by joshawesome.

I haven't brought along a camera with me yet, but I'm going to Sunday if the weather holds out. When I have been going, I keep kicking myself because I see things that I want to remember and I don't have a camera with me.

Mountain Biking...anyone?

Sports Community — Posted: May. 24, 2008  ...   Last By: joshawesome @ 5 months ago

I've been trying to build up the strength in my heart and I've taken up mountain biking. Nothing too extreme as of yet, but on Sunday I'm hoping the weather stays nice so that I can get out there and try a run at one of the harder trails in my area. I'm hoping I don't pass out, so good thing I'm going with some friends. Anyway...

Are there any other people that enjoy mountain biking?

So far I've been enjoying the scenery the most. Here in Western New York you never run out of beautiful things to look at. Mostly it's just trees though.

Now I'm really hungry. :)

I'm going to eventually try all of these for my own purposes. My sister decided that she wants empanadas. She said to me "Now all you have to do is buy all the stuff and make them." 'scuse me?

I'm going to go to the grocery store tonight and pick up some stuff. I'll try out a couple of the recipes you all suggested and see if I can convince her to do one of those.

» Spanish/Mexican recipes :)  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by Gnorb.

I wouldn't have it if I didn't make it myself or if I knew that it wasn't made fresh. I've had store bought guac before, and while it's not *that* bad, why buy that when making it yourself tastes so much better. It's not like it takes forever to make it either.

One of my younger sisters is doing a project for her Spanish class. She needs to prepare a food dish and bring it to her class so they can eat it.

So far I've suggested taquitos, chips and dip (salsa and guacamole), quesadillas, and enchiladas and she hasn't been thrilled with them.

And so that brings me to all of you. Do you have any suggestions for her? Well, technically, I'll probably end up cooking it, but you know. It can be anything from appetizers to dessert, but it should be cheap because I'm not spending that much money to feed fifteen 13 year olds and a teacher.

  1. What would an average day be like if you were born to that society? Work, whether that be farming, gathering, hunting, carpentry, or what have you. I would think that family/community meals would be given huge emphasis and take up a portion of the day. This would also be the time where entertainment would be most prevalent.
  2. What kind of challenges would you see? Guarding against any predators or threats to the way of life would be huge challenges and would probably be the biggest challenge.
  3. What spectrum of ideologies would you come across? I agree with Ozone when he says that
Ideologies will differ greatly region to region. In areas with lush land and animal life, you'll have a more open and laid back lifestyle, followed by population boom. In harsher climates that necessitate more work you'll get the invention of holidays/festivals to break up the daily grind and to reward themselves for good harvests/plantings/etc.
For holidays, I would think that they would revolve around any sort of harvesting, or growing season, as well as any sort of natural seasonal change. Tribal cultures are deeply intertwined with the Earth's cycles.
  4. Would you try to rebuild the old system and technology? Would others? Again, I agree with Ozone. Some would try to rebuild some of the old technologies, however, I think that they would try to rebuild the technologies that would improve life, like medical technologies.
    • If rebuilding, how would you ensure that we had sustainable growth, and what mistakes from the past would you want to make sure were never repeated? I would think that any sort of mega-bomb would be avoided. Any sort of mass destruction would want to be avoided for that matter. I don't think that technology would evolve fast enough for that to happen in one or two generations however, probably more than that.
  5. What about art and music, what forms would they take? I would think that pottery and ceramics would be a huge part of the artistic culture. As well has paintings and murals. I think that most of this would revolve around nature. As for music, instruments would be limited to what they could make from readily available resources. I think folk music would probably be the main genre.
  6. Would we see a return of the fireside story? Yes. Storytelling would play a huge role in the culture. From history, these are usually the first stories that are put to paper.
  7. Take the society you live in right now and make it the past of this new society.
    • What social norms are kept? I can't imagine that there would be very many that would remain. The way of life would be completely different than what it was in the past.
    • What norms are discarded? Pretty much all of them. I can't really think of any off the top of my head that would actually remain.
  8. How would today's religions play into this, or would they be largely rejected? I would think that today's religions would be non-existant in the future, tribal society. I think that the future tribal society would revert back to a more Earth-centric religion, with many Gods depicting the various aspects of nature.
  9. How would current tribal societies be affected, if at all, by the changes? Different tribes would obviously have different beliefs, especially the ones from different regions. However, I don't think that religious differences would play that big of a role between the tribes.

That's all I have at the moment. I'll have to think more and get back to you.
