I voted earlier this evening in Ohio, and I was in and out in 10 minutes or so. I am, however, in a pretty tiny town, so...

I ran updates twice yesterday and this morning. I'm seeing entries for the 29th.

I'm seeing some new stuff now, but just a question... I thought the updates were automatic?

I don't really have a preference either way. I wouldn't mind having a look at what's cooking, but I can also wait until the entire meal is done; whichever.

» Is this dancing?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by Vidar.

That's not dance, it's sex without penetration. I would label myself as liberal (perhaps extremely liberal), but I think those "dances" cross way too many boundaries. Even if they were adults, I'd call it tasteless crap; that they're not even adults makes it awful. Where are their parents?

As a parent, if I found my son doing that with friends, I'd feel pretty bad; wouldn't it reflect on me that I'd made a serious blunder in raising him? Perfection is impossible, but I hope that when my son gets older, I will have done a good enough job with him that he knows that that is NOT dancing, and it is NOT something he should be doing - not until he's an adult and has moved out of the house, at any rate.

Tyme our society is growing more complex and competitive with each passing day. I wouldn't be surprised if our kids are doing this at age 10.

Going to have to go with RightOn, Michael: WTF? What is that supposed to mean? Our society is growing more complex and competitive, and so we should expect 14 and 15 year olds to act like that on video, and then post it to the internet?

If that's the case, maybe the doomsayers are right. Maybe our society is headed for the garbage.

» Do you find that self-hosting your blog takes focus away from content?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by jiggerish.

Self-hosting my blog doesn't take focus away from the content now, but it used to. When I first went to self-hosting on a former blog of mine, I spent 95% of my time messing around with code, themes, etc., 5% on actually writing posts. I've gotten much better about tinkering with all of that stuff, and only do it until I'm mostly happy, and then I walk away from it. (I say "mostly" happy, because if I strove for complete satisfaction, I'd never write anything. Ever.)

Would I give up self-hosting now? Probably not. System 13 started on WordPress.com, and I quickly ran into wanting to add stuff to my site that WP.com just wouldn't do. This didn't happen often, but when it did, it was frustrating to realize that, no, there really wasn't any way to do it. One issue I recall is I wanted to include some of my books from LibraryThing in my sidebar; the widget script was JavaScript, which wasn't allowed on WP.com, and so no LT widget.

Ironically, now that I've been self-hosted for good while and can do mostly as I please, there are no LT books in my sidebar. Go figure. ;) Still, though - the very fact that I know I can put them back in if I want is comforting, in a geeky sort of way.

In short: self-hosting can take focus away from your content if you let it. Set limits to yourself; if you're digging through code for 15 hours a week and writing for 15 minutes, it's probably time to shout "stop this!" From the viewpoint of a reader of your site, Gnorb, you being self-hosted hasn't affected much; I love your posts.

» Mathematics: Hate it or Love it?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by realepicurean.

I like basic math, and even occasionally algebra, but generally speaking, I hated the subject in school; I seriously considered having a small party after I took my last math class in college a few quarters back.

I might have liked it more if more of it had been practical, because a lot of it made me feel like I was learning how to figure out the trajectory of a spaceship or something similar. I don't own any spaceships. :)

However, that doesn't explain all of my dislike towards the subject. I'm taking a geology course now, and while knowing the difference between potassium feldspar and plagioclase feldspar will likely never be helpful in my everyday life, I'm loving the class. I've had something "against" beyond-basic math for as long as I can remember, and despite previous efforts, I can't seem to shake the feeling.

» Adverbs: Friend Or Foe?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by Josh.

I'm with Oli. I'll admit that often, adding an adverb to a sentence makes it clunkier while not strengthening or changing the meaning of the sentence very much. However, I think a strict rule of "stay away from adverbs" is going too far. It should be a guideline, something to keep in mind while writing, but a rule? No.

» Online solution to my writing snippet overload?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by endellion.

Have you considered just using a text or Word file and adding tags at the beginning or end of each snippet? You could do this with a wiki as well. Either way, a quick Find or search will scan all of your snippets and tags. It would also simplify the process - the idea of trying to organize snippets of writing into some forced hierarchy system sounds crummy to me. "Should this snippet go in this section or that section? Or should I copy it into both sections?" etc.

With an online system with a "page" for each snippet, in search results, you're probably going to just get the title of the snippet page, or a bit of the actual text. If that's the case, you're going to have to come up with titles for each snippet, which sounds pretty pointless. With one big wiki-page / Word file, cycling through whatever tag word you're looking for, the screen will just jump to where the snippet is, so you can see what it is at a glance.

Oli:

Dreamhost. Cheap (with coupon codes up to $97 off). Powerful. No stupid hard CPU-usage cut-offs. And fully featured.

Sadly, not quite the case anymore. They're capping coupons at $50 - even the $97 dollar one. More info here and here.

» Is email dying?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by Scrivs.

I can't really give any insight into this, because I've been using Gmail almost exclusively ever since I got an invite to it. Other than it being down three or four times for a couple of minutes, I've never had any problem with it at all. Out of the hundreds I get a week, occasionally one or two spam messages will make it to my inbox.

If we're talking usage, for me, email isn't dying. In fact, I'm probably using it more now than I was a few years ago.

» DreamHost Billing Error... Not Good  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by cellseven.

@Oli: I agree, I'm not really sure why this is being seen by many as such a big deal. I know they screwed up and overcharged a lot of people, but they fessed up, and they're fixing it. Also:

Even if you move host, there is every chance that this could happen again because all this comes down to human error.

The fact that it was a human error doesn't "fix" the money issues that folks are running into because of Dreamhost's mistake; I know that. If I had accidentally been billed $800, my bank account would be drastically overdrawn, and it'd be a pain in the butt to get it all fixed up. But - if a company I deal with overcharges me and breaks my bank account, I'd much rather it be a company that responds quickly and honestly, rather than one that sits around for weeks and goes "We're working on it."

Put yourself in their shoes, folks. I think it's clear that, unless Dreamhost wanted a big mess to clean up which will ultimately make them lose some money, this wasn't malicious.

» DreamHost Billing Error... Not Good  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by cellseven.

Sounds like a good deal, and from the research that I have done people seem to be overall more pleased with the experience on lunarpages as compared to dreamhost.

I think that's extremely difficult to gauge. I considered Dreamhost at one point, and so I tried to get a feel for what people thought of them. I found tons of "oh my god, I love this host", as well as tons of "this place sucks!" It's also difficult because we don't know how many customers each company has. If Dreamhost has a million, and Lunarpages has 500,000, Dreamhost could have more unhappy customers, but still be the "better" host. I'm not saying you can't get a feel for such a topic, but what was your research, exactly?

» DreamHost Billing Error... Not Good  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by cellseven.

@Oli: Nicely said. While I'm not a DH customer and so perhaps my opinion matters less, I thought some of the responses here were a bit over the top. People screw up, whether you're one of us, or the billing guy at Dreamhost. Screaming and raving about it doesn't make it any better. The fact that they came out and said "sorry, we made a major mistake and we know it" means a lot, I think.

» Blogging in the UK still yet to take off?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Bartoneus.

I read a fair share of blogs written by people from the UK. Just because there aren't a large number of UK bloggers clamoring to make money from the activity does not mean it hasn't "taken off."

Sure people write in their livejournal accounts but no one really takes it to Problogger levels.

And? Is there a problem with this? Is blogging not blogging unless you're trying to make money from it, gain something from it?

What exactly is "Problogger levels"? Posting numerous times a day? Monetizing?

» What Feed Reader Do You Use?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by MattBernstein.

I use Google Reader, which I've been using for a long while now. I started out with Bloglines, which I also soon discovered didn't suit my tastes. I hated that clicking on a feed marked every item as read. I moved on to other stuff, settling on FeedDemon for a short while. I found that I wasn't crazy about the desktop feed reader thing, so I went back online with Feedlounge. I loved Feedlounge - until things started just not working at all. It went downhill from there. In the midst of using Feedlounge, Google Reader had been released with a difference interface, quite a bit different than its initial launch, and so I gave it another whirl. It did what I wanted, was free, and worked.

So there I am.

» Does the 2nd Amendment apply to blind people?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by deadskip.

I think they have the "right" to do so, certainly; but I would probably question the sanity of any completely blind person that wanted to own one. I am incapable of flying a jet plane, so I don't need an F16; a blind person is incapable of aiming a gun with any precision whatsoever, and so they don't need one, at least not for self protection. I suppose they could have someone at the shooting range say "a little higher, to the left", etc., but I don't know how much fun that would be.

But, sure, the "right" exists.

» What's up? How are you doing?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by D_U_N_C_A_N.

This happens to me all the time at work, where I'm a reference assistant at the university library. Someone will walk close by my desk, I'll nod towards them or say "Hi", and they'll respond with "How are you?", "How's it going?", "What's up?". Before I've half a moment to respond, they've walked on.

If I have time to do so, I generally say "I'm doing alright" (even if I'm not), then ask the person how they're doing. They'll then respond that they're very well or whatever - even if they're not.

Brief social encounters that follow entrenched questions and answers can be pretty weird.

» To the Writers: Do You Do Writing Exercises?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Kamigoroshi.

I agree with Rich and fuscom. The best writing exercise you can do is to just write. If you're wanting to write your book, skip all of the stuff you listed and sit down and write your book. Skip the prepared exercises. If you want to avoid writing your book and just talk about writing your book, continue on with writing notes here about how to write.
