» Recommended PDAs?  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by Gnorb.

I'd still suggest an iPod Touch, maybe you can find a refurb at some point in time. I tried to get into the PDA game for a while, but the iPhone/iPod Touch really changed the game. No need for a stylus, no need for cryptic graffiti (mentioned above), and so many other benefits to boot. Not to mention the crazy awesomeness to come with 3rd party apps in the coming months. If your $300 limit isn't extremely limiting, I would definitely suggest an iPod Touch.

» External Monitor for my Macbook!  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by Ollie.

I've always been partial to non-Apple displays simply due to price point. The equipment doesn't really justify the increase in price for an Apple branded monitor.

I'm running a MacBook hooked up to a 21" widescreen Samsung 205BW and it's been a great monitor. To answer Mike's question, MacBooks can indeed run a dual-display setup (surprisingly well) given that it uses onboard video. I do believe there is a resolution limit, however; so don't go hooking up a 30" monitor any time soon :)

» Limitations of Adobe Fireworks?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by RightOn.

I recently moved from Photoshop to Fireworks to put together design comps because it truly is the design application for Web designers (in my opinion). Photoshop is designed for and caters to photographers. The application is huge, and working on comps, you'll hardly use the features. Fireworks has (nearly) every feature you'd use in Photoshop for Web design, but the added benefit of vector objects, and other tools designed specifically for you to get the look you're going for quickly and easily. It seems as though Fireworks has caught on quite a bit recently, and I'm reading more and more about people becoming interested in it. I think it's great, and suggest you (or any Web designer for that matter) give it a solid effort for at least a couple months. Learn the ins and outs of the app, and don't compare it to something you may be used to.

» OmniFocus vs. Things  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by amandag.

That's one of the selling points of Things from what I can see; people love the fact that you don't have to work by the GTD "rules" -- Things let you figure out your own system that works for you. I definitely agree in that once Thigns obtains iCal integration, it will be much more attractive. I hope that's one of the highest priorities. I'll definitely be keeping my eye on the app, once it matures a bit more, it just might be worth the switch.

Just FYI: you can change the Sidebar to a Drawer and the Drawer side in Preferences > Interface in Colloquy

» OmniFocus vs. Things  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by amandag.

I can definitely see the attraction to the interface of Things. I had a similar experience with my personal finance application decision a few months ago. I came across Cha-Ching, the interface was stunning, and the app *seemed* to work as it should. Of course I shopped around a bit, and the runner up at the time was iBank. It had more features than Cha-Ching, but the interface, in my opinion, was not very Mac-like and a bit confusing to use. I opted for Cha-Ching, even though it was quite early in development.

I started noticing some quirks, some math not working out properly, and then out of nowhere the developers seemed to halt work for a few months. They're back to work, but there are still some bugs that absolutely need to be worked out (such as transferring from one account to another) before it can be completely depended upon. I ended up backtracking and purchasing iBank for the features, and I've found it to be completely great.

That is not to say (at all) that Things will follow suit. From what I can see, CulturedCode is a very responsible company making very good software (with superb UI design). I'll definitely be keeping my eye on the app, especially for iCal integration.

» OmniFocus vs. Things  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by amandag.

I spent some serious time with OmniFocus just now, and purchased a license. The way it integrates with iCal has totally sold me. It's smart enough to add (to iCal) all the items from a parallel project, while keeping track and adding only one item at a time if they're sequential. For me, that's completely killer since I sync to my phone and (thanks to Leopard's handling of To Do's) will always have a copy for reference.

While Things has a prettier interface (at least I think so) -- the functionality of OmniFocus is quite nice and I'm really liking it. I'll be sure to revisit this note in a couple weeks after really getting some use out of OmniFocus.

» OmniFocus vs. Things  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by amandag.

OmniFocus also has the 'quick entry' functionality you mentioned. It's also already got integration with iCal/Mail which is a major plus for me. Things has it in the works, but OmniFocus already has it. I've got to admit. OmniFocus has gained a few points both for maturity, as well as being an Omni product.

OmniFocus vs. Things

Apple Community — Posted: Jan. 4, 2008  ...   Last By: amandag @ 5 months ago

I've been keeping an eye on both apps for some time now, and since the discount period for OmniFocus is running out, and Things is also offering a discounted price on the new public beta, they both ring in at the same price.

From far away, the apps are fairly similar, they both focus on GTD task management. Has anyone got any experience with either app? Any pros/cons you can list off the top of your head?

I can say that OmniFocus does look and feel more mature, because it is. But Things looks to be nearly on par feature-wise at some point in the future. Does anyone feel like Things is absolutely worth the wait?

» Windows Prototyping/Wireframe layout software?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by Ozone42.

I had actually just written an article on this very topic. If you're looking for a really robust tool, I'd suggest Fireworks. Not only is it great for rapid wireframing, you can continue to use it for your designs themselves.

» Geotagging Photos  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by ericastjohn.

I really think it's a great idea -- but I never got into it simply because I know I'd forget to keep track of the exact points I took a shot. I think it will be great when many cameras begin embedding GPS chips which record the information right in the EXIF data, automating the whole process.

» Flickr apathy  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by seriocomic.

I really think Flickr is as popular as it is because of the ease of use, both for the Flickr member, as well as their friends/family. I use Flickr as a way to share images with my friends and family instead of having to take the time to sit down and burn a dozen CDs and pop them in the mail. The integration with printing services is a complete selling point as well. I'm not really in it for the community aspects, but it's (sometimes) nice to keep an eye on people you know personally.

» Wordpress Users: Do you customize you login screen?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by jchristopher.

I don't customize my login because I'm the only one who sees it. If I ever ended up doing client work based around WordPress, I'd definitely customize it. It would act as some icing on the cake you just spent many hours putting together. The BM plugin makes it quite easy, so why not?

» Safari 3.04 for Windows is GREAT  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by httpwptexofi.

I haven't had a chance to check it out in much detail on my XP machine, as I hardly use the thing anymore. But since the arrival of Leopard, I've been using Safari simply because it works really well. You can also enable the Debug menu, giving you access to lots of developer tools (if that's your fancy) -- including WebKit's Web Inspector.

I'd really like to take it for a test drive in XP soon, but I can understand how many Windows users will be put off by the complete aesthetic differences.

» iPod/iPhone WiFi question  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by jchristopher.

You'll need a WiFi router. Unfortunately you can't use the WiFi antenna in your iBook to act as an access point for WiFi. If you do end up snagging a router, at least you'll be able to use it with both your iPod as well as your iBook though!

» Favorite JavaScript Library  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by alexsuraci.

I've been using mootools for quite some time, but I've decided to give lots more attention to jQuery. I try to at least check out quite a few JavaScript libraries, because at the end of the day, a certain library could be more useful when compared to another for a particular project.

For quick and dirty projects, I often find myself using Robert Nyman's DOMAssistant -- quite small, quite useful.

I used it for a while, but only for application launching. With the new Spotlight in Leopard, I don't really have much use for Quicksilver. On another note; didn't it recently go open source? If so, that's great.

» Help Me Understand Advertising  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by apogee.

I really don't get it myself. The conclusion I've come to is that I basically just spend too much time on the Web and have subconsciously taught myself to ignore anything that even resembles an ad. I just don't see them.

For many people, though, hopping on the web is still a unique experience. They'll take everything on a page into consideration and click if there is even the slightest interest. I think that's why some sites are magnets for ad revenue, but what the heck do I know :)

» Has Anyone Jailbroken Their iPhone/iPod Touch?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by jchristopher.

I jailbroke my iPhone when it was 1.0.2 and loved it. Now that an SDK is really coming down the pipe I might just wait that out instead... did you have any troubles in your process?

» Getting a Mac... suggest software!  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by michele.

I tried using NeoOffice for a while, but it is quite slow. I've since moved to iWork '08 and I'm really happy with it. The OpenOffice devs are working on a native OS X version so you can keep an eye out for that, but I'm not sure how soon that will be a reality.

For a browser recommendation, I use Firefox, but be prepared; it's ugly. Quite slow at times, Flash basically just eats anything in it's path, and I'm staring at lots of beach balls (spinning rainbow ball when the machine is really busy). Camino is a great alternative. I stay far, far away from Safari.

Image editing will depend on what you're looking to do. If it's just photo touch-ups, Pixelmator is something to keep your eye on, or Acorn. If it's doing print work or other design-focused work, Photoshop will be king for a long time.

» Apple iPhone SDK On The Way  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by jchristopher.

I'm really quite excited about this. I jailbroke my iPhone when it was 1.0.2 and I thought the 3rd party apps were completely fantastic. I still think the phone is top-notch even without 3rd party apps and that's why I bought it, but officially providing an SDK just makes things that much better. There will be some really exciting apps built when it's truly legit.

I completely agree with Ronald -- it's truly painful to use on OS X. I've been a Firefox user first on Windows (works great), then on Linux (works even better), but when I switched to Mac I was severely disappointed. Memory hog, painfully slow at times, and just feels bulky.

» Coda Not All It's Cracked Up To Be  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by Rizza.

I'll be honest -- I've since started using Coda full time. After forcing myself to use the built in preview it really works out quite nicely. A slick DOM inspector with console.log and you're well on your way. I'm dying for a more elaborate snippet system, though. Currently there are Clips, and they're little more than that. I'd like some multi-tab triggers on a per-Clip basis. I think they'll be coming down the pipe though.
