Finally, designers can stop fudging web crawlers looking for content on their flash sites. This will allow trues indexing of flash text and dynamic content for the major search engines. Look for some search shifts in the next 3 months.

The Yahoo FBL was so successful that it forced Yahoo to re-evaluate the process. Perhaps that is a nice way of saying, until we find out who will own us, we have stopped processing these requests.
Fatdoor is a social network that planned to be community based and provide locality and interest based groups to have a more adult social network. They halted their development after concerns about the idea of them crawling the web for information and creating associations with users based on information found regarding their locality (physical and online resources). A nice article on that can be seen here: http://localonliner.com/2007/04/17/fatdoor-crawls-the-web-for-neighbor-info/
Fatdoor received 5.5 million in additional funding (http://mashable.com/2007/11/13/fatdoor-funded/) at the end of 2007, but went lame duck amid privacy concerns. Now they are back as Centerd and focusing on the organizational aspect of local community and social network.
So, to rephrase my question, is there actual interest in an adult oriented community based social network like this. I ask because I wm working on a concept like this and would be interested to see if they can be successful beyond initial funding and if anyone thinks that there with be a migration from Facebook or MySpace to these less anonymous yet more private communities.
After what seems like forever, a well funded social network site finally has a public offering after realizations that the initial concept for Fatdoor would lead to a myriad of privacy issues. Here is a snippet from their email today:
"Thanks for requesting an invitation to Fatdoor, we appreciate your patience. We've been busy building a new site, and as you may have noticed, we also changed our company name to Center'd (www.centerd.com) to better reflect our new product."
Snazzy looking site, with a nice mix of graphic elements and photography.
Does anyone think this idea can take off?
True, the homepage lacks information for anyone that does not already know what tivo is, it really should have some info, or embed somethin telling in the video. As for the rest of the site, they discuss the migration here it explains that the changes will be fazed in over the next few weeks.
AP writer Jessica Mintz takes a look at the image of Microsoft LIVE. I can hardly image there is anything worth saving, aside from the fact that MS always pours money into failing business models and waits out its competitors.
The new design, IMHO, (take a look here)is actually stunningly elegant. I really like the tone on tone coloring of the blue as well as the simplified navigation. They are planning to add some easier to use features as well. All in all, I am impressed with the direction the product is going. Recently they have won their lawsuits and brought back the lifetime service plan, and now a new site with fresh easy to use content. Welcome Back Tivo. I never left your side.
I can agree that sometime the sidekicks make the show. However, let's not forget that almost NEVER has a sidekick made their own show work.
Joanie loves Chachi and Joey to Name a few. Though admittedly unlike Joanie loves Chachi, Happy Days did spawn 2 fun shows from minor characters that would not actually classify as sidekicks: Mork and Mindy as well as Laverne and Shirley.
I will retract my Punky Brewster comment IF and ONLY IF we all pretend the Punky Brewster cartoon never existed.
So, I can agree. MOST of the shows mentioned were the worst. But lets not forget gems like Punky Brewster and Welcome Back Cotter (without Mr. Cotter or Vinnie Barbarino in the later episodes). What I actually find flawed with the list is that because it attempts to span the history of television shows it makes itself irrelevant.
All in all, it was a fun read and I enjoyed looking it over. I would have like to see the worst shows of the 80's (which it primarily focused on anyhow) and then a counter with the best. But alas, I am sure a list exists somewhere.

I think I would partially agree with Fuscom, but I would add that the future of the web will be a personalized experience. You will interact with the web by selecting the type of content you want. Instead of being fed the entire site, you will get the piece you want, much like the change in music from albums to tracks. Where design trends come in will be a mixture of functionality and feel in the mode of viewer skins, which the lemmings will flock to the design fads, while the experienced will design there own or use well planned designs and UIs.
Back to the initial topic however, design trends are ground swell. Hardcore users will early adopt edgy design elements, and then some commercial designer will spot it an emulate its originality.. BANG the masses are told what to like and flock to it. Goddamn lemmings...
