You can't go wrong with Ella Fitzgerald, that's a fact. I love Jazz and would highly recommend you just go to the store and get a couple of "best of" compilations.

» what's the point?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by ReddyKilowatt.

I'm not saying anyone is dumb or trying to insult. But I do think that we need to be careful that we separate the instance of religion from the purpose of religion. The fact that some people have used religion as a guise for control does not imply that the purpose of religion is control.

Of course, if you really do believe that the entire purpose of religion is control, then what I say doesn't matter too much :D .

» Which blogging platform do you Like?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by StevenCampbell.

Having used Blogger, Movable Type, WordPress and Textpattern, I can say with a good degree of certainty that it really matters what you're wanting to do with your blog. I find Textpattern easier to design with due to the template tags (though from what I hear, WordPress has template tags in the pipe.) Textpattern is great at natively dealing with comment spam without any plugins or extra countermeasures like Akismet, Bad Behavior or Spam Karma. Textpattern is easily the best choice for a "deep" site that includes more than just a blog. But if you're just wanting a blog, then WordPress is definitely what you should go with.

Heh, I wonder who would miss any one blog, should it disappear. My blog, Copyblogger, Tech Crunch, any of 'em. I think blogs only have meaning when viewed in community (like 9rules) Seriously though, I don't think anyone would miss any one blog for very long.

» What's wrong with being single?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by chris.

There's no need for an explanation. Sometimes society tends to try to push the ideal that a single person is half a person, that we become "whole" when we find the right someone. That's a lie. Everyone is a whole someome, single or not.

I dig the icon usage. I dig the dark background with a white page. It's a good effect. I think the narrow sidebar is cool too. Fat footer gets a thumbs-up.

I'd make the drop shadow in the header about half as dark. As in, when you do the drop shadow in PS make the opacity like, 25% or so from where it is right now.

The blue is a little too dark, and the main body text is a little too wide, maybe add in a second sidebar? Or ... you could just reduce the overall width of the site in general. Right now you've gotta be pushing about 950px. Maybe reduce that to 800 or so and it might feel less spread out.

You've got great padding on the sides of the content though, I don't feel like I'm going to fall off the page.

The dark blue text in the black footer makes my eyes go a little wonky. but I like the effect ;) .

But dude, it's a good job. And it reflects who you are, I think.

Go for Vista, then you can have desktop effects that are almost as good as we have for Linux ;).

Nah, seriously though, stick with XP. It's been said before: Vista doesn't offer much more than XP.

» Do you mind if I curse?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by focused.

It's all about the context for me. People who use curse words in every other sentence appear to me as having a small vocabulary. But then, sometimes a curse word is the only appropriate word that will communicate the thought. I think moderation makes cursing more effective, if that makes sense.

That said, I hardly ever curse on my blog or in real life. But some of my favorite blogs do have cursing in them.

Feed with all posts or only the main ones?

Web Community — Posted: Aug. 9, 2007  ...   Last By: peroty @ 1 year ago

I've got a question for y'all and the way you answer will seriously influence my blog's feed, to please think hard ;)

On my blog about, oh, 2 or 3 times a week I'll post a "big article." You know what I mean, an essay or whatever.

The rest of the time, about 5 times a day I'll post links, videos, etc.

If you were going to subscribe to my feed what would you want? Would you want to know every time I posted a link or would you only want to know when I wrote something big?

I'm pretty sure that Kottke only includes his "major" posts in his feed, right?

I'd like to meet some 9rulers who live in the ATL area. There was a meeting before that was set up but it was on a Sunday and that's the worst possible day for a minister to try to take off from work ;). Any ATL 9rulers up for a meet?

What blogger would you want to meet in person?

Blogging Community — Posted: Jul. 30, 2007  ...   Last By: joshawesome @ 7 months ago

I was thinking about this on my ride home from this evening. If you could meet any one blogger in the world and have lunch with him/her, who would it be? Why?

I would like to meet Shawn Anthony because he and I both have an obsession with blogging and it's like he's in my head when it comes to most issues. I just get the feeling that we would get along really well.

I'm a Christian minister in a Southern Baptist Church and I LOVE Harry Potter. Some of the best fiction ever written, as evidenced by the MASSIVE following of people of all ages.

As for this Christian group, bah. Morons. Did they forget that C.S. Lewis, one of the more prominent Christian writers and theologians, created the character called Gandalf? He was a wizard, doing battle with veritable demons on a seemingly regular basis. To embrace Lewis and reject Harry Potter is ultimate hypocrisy.

"Personally, I find it completely ironic that these Christians would rather burn a fictional character--were he real--at the stake (based on the OT verse that states, "Do not suffer a witch to live") than try to preach the salvation message to him. One'd think they'd believe Christ died for HP as well (were HP real, that is) and would want to show him the same grace and mercy they received themselves, you know?"

HAHAHAHA! Exactly my thoughts.

It's nutball Christians like this that give the rest of us a bad name. I swear, I literally spend more time refuting the wayward (and often harmful) beliefs of Christians than I do arguing with those who are of a different religion. Perhaps that speaks more of me than anyone else though. Dang, I'm gonna get flamed for that last statement.

"yes, you have to go out and buy windows if you want to use ie."

Man, that just sucks. Thanks for the straightforward answer, Ozone.

As for browsershots, that's really not an option for me. Especially when I'm trying to debug a design, it's a MAJOR waste of time waiting for those screenshots.

» Is Marriage So Important to Women?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by dewdrops.

There are lots of double standards like that which are still carrying over from the Victorian era. A man who has a lot of sexual "conquests" may be seen by his peers as being something of a superstar. A woman who does the same thing is seen as a slut. It's ridiculous. What's good for a man is good for a woman.

Run IE on a Mac?

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 24, 2007  ...   Last By: glenndavid @ 1 year ago

I'm not a Mac owner. I'm a Linux fanboy but I would love to get a Mac at one point in the not-so-far future. In my spare time I do a bit of web design and was wondering how y'all (as in, Mac using web designers) test your designs in IE?

Are Parallels or VM the only options? And if so, does that mean that basically I have to go out and buy Windows to install on a Mac? I'm a n00b, please enlighten me.
