I'll bite! I'd appreciate it if anyone is willing to critique my recent piece:

Due Credit

Thanks in advance. Thanks for starting this note, bloglily. :) I'd reward with some points but alas, I have none. :( <-- sad. Nonetheless, I'm excited to be a part of 9rules. Cheerio! Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Can I just say that when revbennyd recalled that line in the hymn "In the Garden" that disturbingly conjured up some long-buried memories from when I was a child, of the voices of the women in my church singing those words particularly loud? And it was weird. Because it's not as if the men had stopped singing...just that the women really did get louder because that line seemed the most meaningful to them. Too interesting.

Just to contrast, the congregation I now belong to is lead by a rock band worship team. So hymns in general bring back to me a different (childhood) era of my faith. :)

I've got higher allies. Believe me. The chairman of the foundation that pays for the place I've managed to become good friends with, as well as the President of the school who is actually a very close confidant of my family from generations before me.

How very East Coast of you. I can't relate.

I agree with the concept of "picking your battles," or shall I say, "picking your bottles" *groan* but I think sometimes we forget that the battles we picked back in college did mean that much more at the time than we remember in hindsight. :)

Anyway, letter of the law, substance over form ... enjoy your fight, whatever it may be.

I tend to overlook it if it's a one-time thing--like Rich said, if there's any doubt, I too, rarely contest it. But once there's a pattern and you're in a relationship of trust with this person, then that becomes a liability.

As Michael of The Office said, "Fool me once, strike one. But fool me twice ... strike three."

» Age of users on 9rules  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Seb.

I don't know why I was surprised to find such a deep discussion about the "number we are" here. I think it's awesome. Well also, everyone at 9rules (and in the world) is of "age." On any other forum I would've expected to see a billion flames at the bottom mixed in with some personal insults but instead everyone civilly discussed the topic of the discussion...and then the right to discuss the topic in those terms. You guys are probably used to this, so pardon if this is all new to me--I'm a newbie after all.

I'm twenty-eight. And I don't care if you care if I care if you care.

» FirstnameSurname.tld - do you use your real name online?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by winnopeg.

Wow, ionfish. That's such a simple but really cool idea. I'm aghast at how perfect it is. It's owning your name but doing it in the minimal way which I would personally prefer (since I'm one of those closet types who keep my online alias separate).

@carmadyarc: I wish I'd read more, but only The Virtue of Selfishness and Capitalism thus far. Now I'll (maybe have the discipline to learn to set aside reading time, get off the internet and) read more. :)

My mom. And Ayn Rand. :)

» FirstnameSurname.tld - do you use your real name online?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by winnopeg.

I won't use my real name in my blog, much less as a URL. It's a way to remain anonymous from those who would seek me out, including my immediate family. Not that I'd even think they'd search, but it's possible. There are huge cultural and generation gaps there that I won't go into.

I also think being a woman is a huge part of it--there's more to worry about as far as potential "stalkers" go and I think it's somewhat foolish to offer that on a platter. Kathy Sierra is a whole other level, though--I couldn't even imagine it would go to those lengths. Enough about that. I agree in that if they want to find you, they will, but I won't help that process along, myself. I think it's also a way to protect my anonymity in real life, not just online. Sure, all you have to do is look through my flickr feed and find pictures of me, but there's a difference between linking that image to your personal information.

I had a situation once, where I blogged about needing a roommate. A fan of my blog, in turn, had searched through Craigslist for my ad. She found my cell number on that ad (I don't post my cell no. on craigslist either, anymore) and while I hadn't been near my phone when she decided to call, I found 8 missed calls from the same number. Count 'em, 8. She left a very desperate voicemail message in that she really wanted to be my roommate, "if" I had found a roommate, she wanted to "beg me to reconsider," and then went on talking about herself and how she would be a good roommate. When I called her back, I lied in that I had found a roommate (I hadn't) but in reality, she had frightened me. While I'm flattered that someone would want to be my roommate by learning about me from reading my blog, I would prefer to be on common ground with my prospective roommate as she is with me. Call it paranoia.

» What do you do with death threats?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Impz.

To combine bloglily's and hthth's comment, it's precisely why especially as a woman, I don't use my full real name in my blog. As bloggers, we inherently put ourselves out there for scrutiny. If not our personal lives, then our knowledge, skills, tips, etc...

It's cowards hiding behind pseudo-anonymity that have preyed upon that and have used that and her gender against Kathy Sierra.

I was also hesitant to wonder why she reacted the way she did and resulted to locking herself in her house. But as bloglily said--who is to say unless we've undergone the same sort of threats ourselves. Who is to say that they are just threats that online cowards won't act upon? Wouldn't they be the same people who, if Kathy had continued a normal, visible life, will say "told you so" if something in fact DID happen to her? By her protecting herself from this "if," yes--the people who have have stooped so low to make these threats--win. They've succeeded in making her life miserable.

There needs to be enforcement in the online community. I hope law enforcement catches up fast.

A note has never inspired me to write an entry, but it has certainly inspired me to comment on a couple blogs. So the reverse effect does apply. Then again, I'm a newbie on 9rules so maybe I shouldn't even be answering... A negative on the second, too...I find these notes, like forum topics as Rich said, are kind of found on-the-fly. Not in the act of finding research for a topic you already have thought up.

» Personal Blogs applying to 9rules  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by RoseDesRochers.

It is encouraging to hear some current 9rulers having an open mind on "personal" blogs. I personally (har!) consider mine a personal blog first and foremost--however since I'm in Los Angeles, the secondary or arguably even primary topic is the city in which I live. It also stems from my appreciation of the city that I think many natives might not be able to provide, as I'm a transplant originally from the Midwest. So a lot of the ponderings I have will overlap with my location in the city and the experiences I encounter while out and about. I think that comprises a huge portion of the "quality" in my blog--that is, my ability to articulate those epiphanies given my experiences in this city.

I hope my blog is good enough to join the ranks in the maybe-even-near future!!

» Blogging About Your Coworkers  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by bing-a-bong.

You know that quote about the greatest minds talking (blogging) about ideas, great minds talking about events, and average ones talking about people? Screw that; I will talk about my coworkers *all day long*. I have to admit I feel entitled to it, being a woman in a very male-dominated industry. I even give my coworkers pseudonyms--two of which I've named Team Creepy. I'llwrite about how I "put it down" or vent about a situation that I didn't do anything about because I've decided to choose my battles. I do have to admit that I omit anything that has to do with inherently job-related tasks or anything that has to do with my position at the company. I keep it to mostly amusing stories that are mostly social in nature.

» Any Interest in Writing Feedback?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by estarla.

I'm ALL about feedback! Especially now, because I'll be honest. I've recently left Xanga in search of a better blogosphere and I finally found you guys. Like as in, I just joined 9rules, today. Mind you, I am not teenaged, Emo nor anorexic and I do value quality content so it was a long time coming--my leaving, that is. So if any of you would be gracious enough to leave me some feedback on my new wp site, I'd be so ever thankful. :) If it's best to wait til bloglily's new feedback thread, I'll understand. ;)

» Men and the Church  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by revbennyd.

I tend to think that the qualities of Jesus are unisex, to be emulated by both men and women. Would you then perhaps consider the consequences of "marketing" Jesus as masculine maybe including the repelling of women already at your church? I tend to agree with Chacon's premise of being hesitant to put the "spin" on Jesus--I think true believers find they want the truth about Jesus, not how certain qualities of Jesus are conveniently complimentary to him-(or her-) self.

» Would you document death?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by estarla.

I think it's more respectful than non- to be documenting a place of such atrocity. If you weren't to document, then wouldn't you just be aiding the loss of the remembrance of people who've undergone suffering? I agree w/most of the views expressed above, of course, it should be done tastefully, not exploitively.
