Got a Postcard Handy?

Special Interests Community — Posted: Apr. 9, 2008

This website has a neat idea of sending postcards in from all over the world. The idea is to gather postcards that have been sent and collect them from all over. Everyone can participate. All you need is a stamp, a postcard and a pen. Just write a message on the postcard, and drop it in the mail!

You do not have to include any personal information such as a last name or a return address.

All postcards are scanned in and will be shown on the site.

Thank you Clarkey :)

As for being a paramedic... I do miss it so much. Funny thing is.. I did that exact thing leaving as a paramedic to become a computer tech. I dropped all the schooling I had.. all the work, all the expereince and started cold feet to learn - sink or swim on computers. I don't regret it at all.. but it was such a chance I took. All in all, I guess that

getting the courage is hard... and following through even harder.. no matter what you choose to change!

LOL! Thank you Johnny, I appreciate your compliment ! :) I think I will be sticking with this theme... now I have to finish up 2 other sites and I will have a chance to finally finish mine!

» Quick Question for those with IE 6.0 (CSS with IE6 problem?)  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by elixir2004.

elixir2004 I have downloaded it and tried ie5.5, and I am not sure I am going to get it to work in that version :(.

The bottom half is actually a spry from Dreamweaver using JS and CSS. I have tried to tweak it in multiple places, but I have a feeling that the CSS is what is not rendering correctly in ie 5.5. I am not sure if that version of the browser has the correct support for the version of CSS I am using. either that, or it is the Javascript. But, either way.. I am not sure I am going to get it to render much better under 5.5. I will keep looking and trying though.

As of right now, I should have it working correctly on

  • IE 6, 7 and 8 (windows)
  • Safari 3 (windows)
  • Firefox 2 and 3 (windows)
  • Opera 10 (windows)
  • Flock (windows)
  • Sea Monkey (windows)

Thanks elixir2004!
I was unaware of the standalone version , so I have not tested with it before. Usually, I try to get sites to work right in ie6 + but now that I know of this, I will download it and give it a try. Thanks for the heads up on that!

» Quick Question for those with IE 6.0 (CSS with IE6 problem?)  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by elixir2004.

Well, I figured out what the problem was - and it was a strange problem I had not seen before.

When i saved the back.jpg for the background, I was saving it with the "progressive" checked. But, if I unchecked the "progressive" it saved it and IE 6.0.2900 that came with the XP image (From MS for developers - they distribute an XP image with IE 6 so people can test ie 6 under Microsoft Virtual PC) showed it just fine.

So now, I am wondering if the "progressive" form of images exported from Adobe PS and Illustrator present a problem with this version of IE. I tested it multiple times with multiple images and every time - same result - If I saved an image progressive, it would not display in IE6 ^ but if I unchecked it, it is fine.

Weird.

bitsonewmedia you are making me blush :). This is really like the second thing I have ever done on illustrator - the first was some little character I created back in high school that I tried to replicate on a wacom. The waycom and Illustrator are both new to me.. maybe 3 weeks old lol. So... I am actually glad it has turned out as well as it has so far! I guess the target audience I am going for is one that most liekly would have broadband as opposed to dial up.. so that should all be good. Just different for me is all.(and Thanks for the kind words as well )

Thanks Oli!
I am trying to at work today.. and here on 6.0 ie I noticed something strange.. the top half looked fine, but the bottom half was all white.. not sure what is up with that. Nor am I sure why it (halfway) works here but doesnt work at all at home.

I am going to forward myself a screenshot from here so I can look more into it at home.. very strange! It seems to show up fine on yours... IE always seems to make me shake my head.. I almost dread V8 coming out.

Quick Question for those with IE 6.0 (CSS with IE6 problem?)

Design Community — Posted: Mar. 21, 2008  ...   Last By: elixir2004 @ 7 months ago

Hi.
I have IE 7, but I test with IE 6 on Virtual PC (MS). When I test a site I am working on using Virtual PC with IE 6, it does not show my background - the illustration part of the site and the whole background is just dark brown.

example ie6 with virtualpc

example in firefox

Can anyone with IE6 confirm that the illustration does not show like in the example ie6 with virtualpc above, or do you all see the illustration as in the firefox example above ? Thanks
Erica

Johnny -
Excellent suggestion. I think I will do just that. The footer does seem quite plain and lonely on the bottom.
That will be my next project before I start duplicating the pages.

Thank you much for your kind words!

» Design problem: Could you guide me?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by dbme.

If it were me, I would start by trying to eliminate the errors in the html code that I could find. Many times, this will help get the design cross browser compatible..

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fguillaumebelfiore.free.fr&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0

The, I would probabally do this CSS the same... trying not to use proprietary code (made for one browser only)

http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fguillaumebelfiore.free.fr%2F

That is just my 2 cents though.. sometimes correcting code isn't always possible with some hosts.. but it is a start to getting it working in all browsers.

Well, I think I have it as I am going to use it now...

Opinions are welcome :)

The background doesnt "seem" to take too long to load.. but it is hard for me to tell on cable. Plus, I figure the target audience for this site will also have a higher speed connection..

Well, I have made the background darker and added my fav bumblebee :) I do think I like it darker, thanks for the suggestion leliathomas. I could not get the 'right' shade of grey, so I did go with the brown.

Now to add a few more things and then get down to the actual inside of it

» When is enough, enough?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by ericastjohn.

Maybe I have a split personality. :D

Ahh no.. I don't think that is it at all. We each have at least 2 sides to us.. what we are inside and what we project as to how we want others to see us as. They are both part of us.. it is just being selective as to who you let see what part of your 'whole' that only you know all of - what you think, what you feel, what you remember, what you perceive. Nothing wrong with it - it is human nature.

I think at 21 I was just beginning to understand who I really am.. finding myself - outside of books, peers, teachers, family, siblings, friends - learning about who I am compiled from the last 21 years. Growing older is also about growing to understand yourself as well as things around you in different environments.

As for an abusive relationship and change - it took me getting pregnant at 22 from someone who I thought loved me - to get out of broken bones, black eyes, busted lips, stalking.

I woke up one morning 6 months pregnant and decided that I would not have my son bringing his g/f or wife to my house in the condition I was in week after week - and telling me that he saw his father do it to me.. so he thought it was alright to do to his g/f or wife.

After my divorce I swore I would never put myself in that position again. Now, I am married to the most perfect man in my eyes... we celebrated 5 years marriage last October, and we have been together going on 11 years now. And no matter how mad I get, or how mad he gets.. he will walk away and never raise a hand to me. I see now there are more good fish in the sea than bad ones.. it is just hard sometimes to open your eyes.

As much as I hate to say it, I would never take it back though... I learned about myself from it. And, I wouldn't have my son now who I love as much as life. Just another change I had to make.

» How many domains do you own?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by wkasel.

I am still trying to think up a creative name for buying another domain....

I like stuff different (itschanging.com <-- different .. but has a purpose if i hadnt messed the site up ).. and i want to buy a small domain that doesnt make sense until you add a virtual ahead...

like...

cre.8tive.com

where 8tive.com is the domain..

and you can change the beginning to be a whole differnt thing...

n.8tive.com
rel.8tive

but, its taking me a while to come up with something and that hasnt been taken.

» That Chair You Are Sitting In ???  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by ericastjohn.

I think I might try Pelf's idea with the pillow on the chair.. has to be more comfortable than what I have.

The chair is like 2 years old.. but it is very broken in and worn.. feels like I am sitting on cardboard more than a cushion.

I am so partial to it though, I am not sure if I can get another one. Mine has a high back and arms... I love it.

Maybe I will try one of those pillows made of the space age foam that contour to your... body. I wonder how that would feel.

Seems black is the general colour so far... few reds, off white, tan... Interesting. Someone needs to come out with a comfortable line of all different models and colours.. like green, pink, blue, navy, maroon... just to be different.

» When is enough, enough?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by ericastjohn.

I made a huge change to do what I am doing now. I gave up being a paramedic (which I loved!) to drop everything and learn about computers - and move to a new state. I struggled the first few years.. but now.. (9 certs / 10 years later and the job I have always wanted that is in my now blood) I would do it all over again!

What made me decide? I wanted change. I had thought and thought and thought about it. Don't get me wrong, I loved being a paramedic.. but I had a fascination with comptuers I could not 'get over'. Well, actually that started when I was 10 with a commodore 64.

But I actually embrace change. Whether it is at work (I've moved from MO to NC and now to KS with my job), in my life (starting over after a rotten/abusive marriage as a single mom.. and 8 years later getting remarried after I swore I never would), or just anything.. I guess I get bored of the same ole same ole.. and I know after a while I NEED a change.

Sometimes change Has impeeded where I want to eventually get.. but the knowledge learned along the way always makes my goal more attainable - even if I don't see it at first.

My best friend gave me a book before I moved to the Raleigh NC area.. The Dream Giver - http://www.crossroad.to/articles2/05/dream-giver.htm and I read it before I decide to make any big change in my life. It helps me re-analyze my goals and helps reassure me in what I am doing.

Normally, if things go smoothly.. then I know it was meant to be and somewhere out there, there is a reason for whatever happens. I try to take it and learn from it - good change and bad change.

Life is about expereince.. so what better way to expereince it than change. The more you know....

(sorry to go on and on, I did not mean for this to be so long ;)

» Keep on or Ditch it?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by dbme.

Good idea leliathomas! And thanks! I will experiment some more with the background colour when I get back.. unfortunately I had to come into work to do ot this morning :(

I was trying to go a dark grey in the first place because I like the look of it as a background, but I was not sure if it would go with that or not. Hopefully it will look alright though when I try it.

Im all about ladybugs . My Mom started collecting them for me when I was first born.. and now... 30+ years later I still collect them!

I also have a couple of butterflies and bee's I want to add to - just did not have time to add them before I left.

Keep on or Ditch it?

I am trying to create a new theme for my site since the old one is boring.

I am going for a totally new look with more of an'illustrated' look. In fact, this is my first stab at using illustrator. I am undecided on the look, but I wanted to ask your opinion before I continue.

Do you like what it is turning into or should I ditch it now? (The layout/Theme - not the content)

Thanks!

I am trying to think up words with ‘ate’ in them.

  1. Fascinate
  2. Deliberate
  3. Donate
  4. Create

"ate" can come in any part of the word. How many can you think of?

» Obama, Smoker.  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by cooper.

Jeeze.. I can see where that would affect things. That was just wrong. No if and's or buts.

» Obama, Smoker.  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by cooper.

LOL RightOn... Actually, I take the same 15 minute break everyone else does after 2 hours. Normally, I only take 10 minutes of that and end up working the other 5 minutes of my break. Then the same 30 minute lunch everyone else has. So, in essence, it isnt affecting productivity.. I have the same breaks the non smokers do. I am there the same amount of time the non-smokers are, and somtimes even more considering I do not take the full 15 minutes of a scheduled break.

Point being though... whether I smoke or not does not reflect on how well I tell someone where a bridge tap is or a port is bad, walk a tech through doing a throw on a cable pair. I do my job the same - whether I smoke or not.

» Obama, Smoker.  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by cooper.

Personally, I don't equate smoking or non smoking with how well a person can do his or her job. I smoke ciggs, but I rarely drink alcohol.

Smoking ciggs has nothing to do with how well I do my job.. just as the idea that when co workers go out for a beer after work, I drink Coca Cola instead. Once again, neither reflect how I do my job. (It would be different if I lit up between breaks or came into work flat drunk or drank during working hours)

Saying One candidate is less of a candidate because he or she smokes is like saying if he or she has a martini or drink of vodka, that person would be less of a candidate. Personally I would rather a candidate smoke than have a few drinks for lunch.

I agree with above, people throw votes for the stupidest reasons. I'm just happy to know hes human and not perfect!

Just my 2 cents though.

Help, I Need Photoshop Advice for Brush Organization

Software Community — Posted: Mar. 1, 2008

I download a lot of Brushes (And custom shapes, patterns etc) for Photoshop. I love being able to use brushes others have designed, but the biggest problem I have is how to organize them? When I click on brushes, my list expands to 2 screens.

I may use 1 out of every "pack" I have, so I am not likely to delete them at any time.

I thought about "grouping" as in taking the artist and compiling all the 'brushes' by the author into one brush? Is there a better way or has anyone found a plugin?

I am not too impressed with Adobes manager. It would be nice if I could create my own groups under Brushes so when I click on Brushes, it listed groups that could open and close instead of listing every brush.

The same applies for patterns, custom shapes, gradients, textures, etc.

*update* I did find ABRviewer
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=143912

I guess I could put all brushes in an external folder so they do not load up, and I could use this program to view the brushes, find the one I want and then load it in the manager.. but this seems like a time killer.

Though this may be nice, I still have the same problem with all the other presets?

» How Do You Get Used to a Wacom Tablet ?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by ericastjohn.

Well, I have taken the advise and started practicing everyday with the Wacom. The more I play with it, the more I love it!

Last night, I drew a character that I used to doodle in high school with the Wacom. At first, I drew him on a post it note and then tried to trace it on the tablet. That did not work so well. So, this is the result of about 30 minutes of doodling with the Wacom. Don't laugh too hard, it is my first attempt with the Wacom.
