» I'm Loving Ron Paul  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by davidhayes.

Thought I'd dredge this note up in light of this.

The short version is that Ron Paul's name has long been attached to newsletters with some painfully offensive stuff inside. Some excerpts:

This newsletter describes Martin Luther King Jr. as "a world-class adulterer" who "seduced underage girls and boys" and "replaced the evil of forced segregation with the evil of forced integration."

An October 1990 edition of the Political Report ridicules black activists, led by Al Sharpton, for demonstrating at the Statue of Liberty in favor of renaming New York City after Martin Luther King. The newsletter suggests that "Welfaria," "Zooville," "Rapetown," "Dirtburg," and "Lazyopolis" would be better alternatives--and says, "Next time, hold that demonstration at a food stamp bureau or a crack house."

The June 1990 issue of the Political Report says: "I miss the closet. Homosexuals, not to speak of the rest of society, were far better off when social pressure forced them to hide their activities."

Another reason to dislike David Lynch. Even if he's right (and I'm not saying he is), does he really need to be such an a**hole?

Also, doesn't the iPhone's screen have a higher resolution than the standard definition TV on which people have watched movies for years?

@Ozone42
The Civil Rights Act was an effort to make America a more equal place. Creating that equality required government intervention. Ron Paul's idea that racial harmony would have magically coalesced without outside intervention is just plain silly.

And the idea that the Civil Rights Act is "unconstitutional" is absurd. The Constitution allowed slavery and made blacks (technically slaves) three-fifths of a person. If we're really going to be orginalists we should follow those provision as well.

Also, the Patriot Act's a sordid mess. Many would argue that it allowed the government heretofore unheard of ability to spy on citizens unchecked for little more than an illusion of security. (I agree that that overstates the case, but there's some grain of truth in it.) That strikes me as rather different than legislation that has clearly reduced systemic racial inequality.

@Oli
I agree this should stay on topic, but I have to clarify. I was (as I mistakenly thought you were) referring to the process of determining who will run the country, not to the way the country is run.

@Ron Paul fans
I've never understood how anyone can support a guy who proudly opposes the Civil Rights Act.

@RightOn
I'd still love to know what particular votes you're holding against John McCain. I've never heard this argument from anyone else. (Unless you're referring to McCain-Feingold, which I don't understand in those terms.)

» Obama And Huckabee Win Iowa Caucus Say CNN  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by Ozone42.

@Oli
I agree and disagree. The American system is fractured, odd, and messy. But the British system isn't exactly praiseworthy or democratic either. What determines the ascent of anyone to the head of party--and thus the Prime Minister's seat--there occurs in a context of whisperings and back room deals. In America there's at least a pretext of democracy (however faulty you may find the process).

» Obama And Huckabee Win Iowa Caucus Say CNN  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by Ozone42.

@fuscom
It's true that Thompson has been treated as a nonentity, but his campaign focused much more on Iowa than either McCain or Giuliani. McCain's spent almost all of his time is NH, and Giuliani's waiting for much bigger states, like Florida.

» How Many Blog Posts Per Day is too Many?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by LondonGirl.

I've never really bought the idea that too many posts a day will turn off readers. In general, you'll just have those who follow along and those who don't care. Realistically, even if my favorite writer/blogger posted 20 encyclopedia-sized posts a day, I'd follow along. I can't say that I'd read every word of all of them, but nor would I if they were only publishing 200 words a day.

No one (at least that I know) slavishly reads every word of every blog that they "read." This has nothing to do with the number of posts per day, but with their quality and topic. If a blogs regularly hard to read and on a topic I don't like, I may stop following it. But otherwise I'll probably subscribe, and read the content that looks interesting.

The only way that the number of posts matters is if you sacrifice quality for number. Surely I'd prefer one really good post in a day over 12 typo-ridden and clearly-unedited ones. But unless you're making that trade-off (and it doesn't sound like you are) I think you're fine with whatever frequency you want to publish.

Have you tried using evolt.org's standalone version of IE6?

I'm using it on XP, and I don't know why it wouldn't work on Vista. I admit to being rather ignorant of the intricacies of IE/Windows working, but I would at least recommending giving it a try.

» How Do You Present Your Archives to Visitors?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by bitsonewmedia.

I just put together a new archives page at my blog and thought I'd add it to this discussion. Because my design has no sidebar, I went with a separate page for the archives (though I think Nils has a point about people not looking for such a page). Where before I only had the enormous list of posts and the categories section, I added the tag cloud (very easy to do in WP2.3+) and a recommended section.

On each entry, I also have links to related posts. I've switched from the Related Posts plugin that Ollie mentioned to the Similar Posts plugin, which seems to do a better job of both finding similarity and making sure each post has related entries.

» Custom permalinks in WP fail?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by enc.

I've never experienced the problem, but I am wondering: does /%postname%/ or /%post_id%/ work on its own?

I just did a little experiment on my own testing setup (with WP2.3.1) and all three scenarios (each alone and then together) worked for me.

» My Mom Told Me Not To Flush Every Time  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by auburn.

I always heard it as "When it's yellow, let it mellow; when it's brown, flush it down." But it was certainly one of my favorite rhymes when I was about five and first heard it.

And in addition to the point about saving water, I've also heard people with their own septic systems request that you only flush #2.

» Why do the women always take the money?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Tyme.

@Tyme
Absolutely. That's a crucial point.

@JPhill
They exist, but its hard to deny that the vast majority of stay-at-home parents in this country today are still women. It would be incredibly interesting to see a divorce that featured a stay-at-home father. I would hope the division of assets would still work the same way--with the father getting half even though he didn't exactly earn it--but I'm not completely certain.

» Why do the women always take the money?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Tyme.

I think it's interesting that so far only Rich has been brave enough to broach this topic (other than the Rulers, who do pretty much whatever they want)...

In answer to the original question, I think women usually get "half" because they're less likely to work outside of the home during a marriage. Stereotypically, and--whether you like it or not--still today, women stay home to raise the kids while men work. Thus, because they're half of the partnership they're usually entitled to half the stuff. They're staying home, keeping house, raising kids all allows the man (again, in traditional partnerships) to focus more on working and making money. This, in turn, is seen as her contribution to the total earning potential of their partnership and to entitle her to "half."

All of this can seem incredibly convoluted if you wander too deeply into specific cases, but I'd say that's the basic rationale.

» How do you create a local test environment for your blog?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by greghickman.

There are a number of easy ways to get a server with PHP & MySQL running locally. On Windows, I'm currently using WAMP (I don't like the the new look of their site, but its still useful software), I guess it's probably about the same as publicenergy's Vertrigo, though I don't know how they differ.

To first learn how to set it up, I used UrbanGiraffe's now rather old instructions, there are certainly other more recent instructions that say about the same thing.

I think we had a note like this about a month ago, and as I said then:

I'm thankful to be breathing, on this side of the grass. Whatever comes, comes.

That's from Ron Perlman (the guy who played Hellboy). I also like this one from the Buddha:

Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful.

I have a new--or actually, rather old--nomination: 2001: A Space Odyssey. I just watched it. It's amazing that something that aims to be epic and important can be so dull and (to my sensibilities, I wasn't alive in 1968) derivative.

I second most of what lalindsey said. I don't know why it is Safari's font just renders incredibly ugly fonts--maybe it's not using ClearType? Beyond that I don't really see much reason to use Safari, Firefox does everything you suggest as good or better (though I don't have a Mighty Mouse).

» How to improve my writing  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by h3rald.

I've never done Naropa's (or anyone else's) Writing Program. But I do think writing classes are generally useful because (1) they force you to write, and (2) they get you feedback from others. So if you can afford it, I think its a reasonable idea to do that (or any) writing program.

Now, to really improve your writing there are really only two things to do: read and write. That sounds straightforward, but a lot of people seem to forget it.

Reading--especially if you do enough from a wide enough variety of sources--shows you how to use words, construct sentences, and organize stories or arguments. It may be the single most useful thing for any writer.

Having said that, writing's obviously important. As you first start to write, you'll probably think that what you're producing is garbage. You may even be right. But with time and effort and attention, you're sure to improve. And in my experiences, a blog, especially if your goal is just to practice writing, is a great place to do it. It's both more public than your own word processor or typewriter (which encourages you to edit better) and more interactive (free feedback, even if only rarely).

» Should I buy a Mac or not?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by Ozone42.

I think that the learning curve of OS X is shallower than the Windows curve. Yes, if you're used to Windows and have never seen OS X you'll have to get used to a few things, but compared with learning how to use Window, it's cake. And especially since you've used Linux, I doubt there would be anything too troublesome or jarring in the transition to a Mac--well with the possible exception of the command key...

» Freelance Designers Using Wordpress?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by dreamweaver.

Oh. Well, if all you're doing is installing WP, I think thats a reasonable way to feel--though not a very profitable one. Fundamentally, the things that drives the economy isn't that people are doing for others what they can't do for themselves, but things they don't want to. Grocery stores are increasingly filled with examples to prove that fact.

» Freelance Designers Using Wordpress?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by dreamweaver.

I, like JPhill, really like WordPress. I'm a little confused about the issue though. Are you uncomfortable with using WordPress because you didn't build the back-end, or are you uncomfortable with WordPress because you don't know how to use it?

If it's the former, I would assure you that many--read "nearly all"--people who called themselves "designers" on the internet have not built, probably couldn't build, a CMS like WordPress. Designers tend to do design work--the look and feel of a site--while its "developers" who tend to build the back end.

If it's the latter, I would suggest you look around for guides to building WordPress themes. There are a lot out there, and though none of them are great, most are at least good enough to get you started. Also, looking at the CSS/PHP in good themes can teach you quite a bit.

EDIT: I wrote this before I saw lalindsay's post, which said almost exactly what I did.

» Help Me Understand Advertising  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by apogee.

This discussion reminded me of a quote about advertising in general.

Half of the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know what half.

I not really sure how true this is today. I would say that part of the "irrational behavior" of your clients, wrttnwrd, may be driven by a belief that you can't quantify an ad's impact by simple trending or statistics. Perhaps that seems irrational in the internet age where we have much better access to much more accurate numbers, but it seems reasonable based on the old paradigm (from the quotation).

Vidar, I read the note, but I still don't get it. I'm not saying that digg'll suddenly give you a high-traffic blog. Nor will 9rules or any other blog directory. But with time and constant effort and quality, I think anyone could have a high-traffic site/blog. That's the crux of what I'm saying.
