From Glenn's site:

The idea wasn’t to pump up my traffic, gain readers, or gain exposure for my site. It was in full support of the base idea behind MacHeist - helping indie developers.

Considering that both the hacking and the following post made it to the front page of digg, it seems he was just lucky to get all that traffic.

It does show a serious lack of judgment, but Glenn's actions to rectify the situation will show more about his character than making the mistake in the first place I believe. That's assuming he does do something to rectify the situation... keeping radio silence won't help him at all.

To me, the time to rectify the situation was when MT called him on it. That was the time to come out and say, I'm part of something that I'm not proud of. In that case, he'd have been the first to admit it and that would take courage. Being the last, suggests little more than damage control.

I think EngineHosting handled this much better than MT.

Also confirmed by macheist as well. There's at least one p/t code monkey who's annoyed.

I agree with the above. This was a seriously ill-conceived prank that wasted a lot of people's time. Personally, I think Media Temple should have pulled the plug on Glenn's site when they learned of it.

Apparently, applematters / iphonematters thought it would be a good idea to be 'hacked' as well. The implication was that expression engine and/or EllisLab hosting was hacked by malcor leaving the good folks over at ExpressionEngine / EllisLab less than amused.

Sites that were 'hacked' include:
- glennwolsey.com
- macapper.com
- applematters.com

It is worth noting that in Switzerland, where military service is mandatory and every male between 21-32 has their full fatigues and weapon in home, gun crimes are almost unheard of.

So you don't "condone" it but you do "suggest" it... repeatedly. How nice.

Any chance you have a college ID layin around Mike? I have mine from '99 and they STILL give me a student discount :)

Pardon my ignorance, but if you are going to license software illegitimately, why not just download the torrent or the files on usenet? The student price isn't the 'sale' price for those who remember their student ID.

As for Pauls absence of support in 2005... "dunno".

Pardon my ignorance, but how can you write that he supports the fair tax?

» Ron Paul Spam  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by RightOn.

Honestly, I thought it was just a collection of 14 year-old diggers that skewed the online polls. I didn't think there were any real supporters.

He doesn't want to abolish TAXES... he is an ardent supporter of the "Fair Tax".

Isn't the "Fair Tax" a consumption tax in the form of a national retail sales tax on new goods and services? It seems to be designed to replace personal, estate, gift, capital gains, alternative minimum, social security, medicare, self-employment, and corporate taxes. In the process, you get to repeal the 16th amendment. If Ron Paul is for this, why didn't he support the Fair Tax Act of 2005? Pardon my ignorance, but I don't see his name?

The big problem that I have with this is that it makes me, as a business owner, the tax collector. Sure, the fair tax would eliminate the filing of all individual tax returns, but every single business that does not currently collect state sales taxes will have to collect taxes for the federal government. Every doctor will now have to charge sales tax on his/her services. Will the neighborhood kids who mow my lawn and babysit my kids do likewise? And who will collect this tax from retailers and service providers? It may not be called the IRS, but it will have to be overseen by some agency of the federal government.

The fair tax national retail sales tax is 23% percent. That is on top of state sales taxes (collected in 45 states), on top of the sales tax that many cities/counties collect, on top of the special taxes that exist on hotel rooms in most areas of the country. I suppose that a national retail sales tax would also apply to each gallon of gasoline.

Any thoughts on how the existing social security and medicare programs would be funded under the Fair Tax scheme?

Lastly, the fair tax is hardly progressive. There are still outs for income redistribution via family size and poverty credits. And how is it fair where some people have to pay a higher percentage than others merely because they have more money to spend? What incentives will I have to actually spend money in the USA and not overseas?

A fair tax isn't going to fix the problems associated with a $3T annual budget. I am all for the government spending less and being fiscally conservative for a change.

» Kids and math  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Jawaher_1995.

I was generally good at everything in school so I'm not sure I really understand the left-brain/right-brain philosophy. If your children are struggling with math and it is not something you are particularly strong at, then I would recommend you find them a good tutor immediately. My cousin schools his two boys at home and I gave him the same advice when it came to English lit. If your older daughter has indeed missed a fundamental concept somewhere, re-taking a test until she passes with isn't going to help. Learning is a personal journey so I wouldn't ever worry about confusing them by teaching them a different way to look at a problem. In the end, they need to figure it out for themselves... either by practice or one of those magical 'oh' moments when everything starts to make sense.

Just out of curiosity, what specific aspect of math is she struggling with? Can you post a few of the questions she answered incorrectly on her last test?

Absolutely none. While high-speed connections are the norm for me, I just don't see the point of needing to be online to do my work. Similarly, I don't like the idea of handing over my data for another company to mange.

The only "in joke" is Ron Paul's candidacy

At least I'm not alone in this feeling ;)

We must recognize the government led space program is dead and the corpse must be buried as soon as possible. Any defense functions should be put under the military, and the rest of NASA should be sold to private operators. -- Ron Paul

I, for one, take great pride when I think that Americans have built and launched planetary research probes and that they continue to operate robots on Mars. It may not be done for profit, but it is damn cool.

Ron Paul Spam

Politics Community — Posted: Oct. 2, 2007  ...   Last By: RightOn @ 1 year ago

Can anyone please tell me why the web is becoming increasingly full of Ron Paul spam? Is it some sort of "in joke" that I'm not privy to?

I appreciate that he is anti-war, but it is hardly a unique stance among candidates, or US citizens for that matter. I understand the appeal of small government, but having studied economics (and as a small business owner), I think abolishing income taxes and the IRS is pure lunacy, given our current deficit. Likewise, as ineffective as he may portray government agencies, I believe there's a reason the DHHS, CIA, FBI, FEMA, FDA, JPL, NASA, and the Department of Education exist. I guarantee all those promised tax cuts aren't going to come at the expense of the Halliburtons and the Ted Stevens of the world, they're going to come at the expense of the people who need it most, as "needless" programs are cut. Finally, I disagree with his views against abortion and gay rights.

So please tell me, if this isn't a big ruse, what is with all the Ron Paul spam?

Who owns your Flickr photos?

Photography Community — Posted: Sep. 24, 2007  ...   Last By: pelf @ 1 year ago

Driving into work this morning and the morning talk show was discussing Alison Chang vs Virgin Mobile (AUS). It seems that Virgin is using a cheesy photo of this girl as part of an Austrailian ad campaign without her (or her parent's) consent. I fully understand that the photographer retains ownership rights to each image, but it seems that even he wasn't aware the photo was being used. Uploading to flickr does give yahoo some rather liberal, royalty-free licensing of your shots (Flickr TOS) and many photos are given Attribution 2.0 (CC-BY) Creative Commons licenses. It is worth noting that Virgin includes the URL to the original photographer/image as the CC license requires.

So how do you pay much attention to how you license photos online? More importantly, how do I license my flickr photos such that they are not used by someone else without my explicit consent?

For the first time since the 1970s, the Canadian dollar is equal to the American dollar. Similarly, the greenback hit a new record low against the euro this morning, two days after the feds made a surprise cut of 1/2% to prime lending rate. As someone who does a fair bit of work in Germany, Switzerland and BC, I can say that this sudden 'fluidity' (weakness?) in the greenback is starting to hurt. Has anyone else been impacted by this?

You accuse Cooper of trolling for posting "we care about oil" without. as you put it, "back[ing] it up with the why and the how." You then end with, "I will gladly call Cindy Sheehan a moron though" without any sort of justification. Thanks for the "contribution" there Ozone.

I don't play the PC game and quite frankly I would expect others to do the same.

There is a difference between not being PC and being a troll.

I think I was mildly misread there...

LOL. How is "forcefully attacking the opinions of others" showing respect? As far as I'm concerned, you consistently write to offend. Sure, state your opinion and question another's POV, but your whole "attacking" mentality is the shits and it brings down 9r IMO.

» War with Iran  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by cooper.

It is somewhat ironic that you wrote the youtube video was "put together by three year olds" to "derail" this note and that, "Cindy Sheehan, "idolizes Hugo Chavez and would probably sleep with Mahmoud Ahmadenijad if she was given the opportunity" and then proceed to call Cooper a moron for expressing her opinion.

Sorry or not, you seem to have a real problem expressing yourself without insulting others who do not share your opinions ("moonbats"??). We all read your posts without feeling the need to berate you so please return the courtesy and give everyone else an opportunity to express their opinion.

» An original design  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by milkaddict.

So what sort of credentials would be required for entry into this professional society? Would you need a high-school diploma? A University Degree? A college course in fine-art? Engineers, doctors, lawyers are required to take advanced degrees, pass certification exams and adhere to a set of ethical guidelines. Do you really think this would work in web design?

Regarding the originality of this (and many other similar designs), Khoi Vinh writes:

Generally, I ask that you refrain from reusing or repurposing the design of this site [subraction.com] in any way — especially if you’re a business of some kind, or you intend to turn it into a template for other people to reuse, or into a product that will be sold or distributed.

On the other hand, I freely encourage you to borrow and/or learn from the site in any way you feel is appropriate, so long as what results at the end is a design that’s reflective of your ideas, and not simply a regurgitation of mine. That’s what’s most important to me: that the design not simply be an instance of paraphrasing my design ideas, but that it’s a product of your own ideas. That’s how we all learn.

I see considerable "similarity" between grid-focus and subtraction.com.

Sorry Paul, I completely agree with megfra and I'm glad somebody has finally said it.

"If a couple that you do not like reflects poorly on how you view the whole Network than I feel we are in trouble since we don't plan on going backwards. As we do grow though, better filtering options are needed in place because too much content at once can definitely be a bad thing."

In that case, I think 9rules is headed for trouble. You probably should have worked harder on putting those filtering options in place before adding 134 more sites. There is way too much junk to sift through now. Filtering can only go so far and I think there is a good chunk of regulars readers who will get frustrated and leave. We can debate the meaning of a 9rules and the definition of a 'blog network' but at the end of the day, the site is primarily an aggregator for content written by others. It seems a shame that the you've chosen to go from being one of the few who only link the best content to one of the masses that links everything. Sadly, I think I can see where 9rules is headed.
