» Member exodus?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Griffith.

I would guess that even the people who have decided to leave do feel a strong affinity for what 9rules has stood for, and still stands for...they wouldn't have applied to join if there wasn't something there. The part that stings is the feeling that they are being REJECTED AS INDIVIDUALS, when actually this is more of a decision by the Rulers to focus on people who want to be part of an active one-on-one community, not just membership in a faceless group of affiliated members.

Tough decision to make when you're already doing a zillion other things...9rules members probably tend toward this more than the general population. It comes down to deciding whether community participation in 9rules is an active part of your methodology for achieving continued success. If it's not, then no hard feelings...our paths just diverge.

I think it goes without saying that everyone who's been a part of 9rules is pretty darn awesome at what they do, and membership does not add or take away from their accomplishments or status in the world. It's wrong, I feel, to assume that this is somehow linked that with the desire to commit time to 9rules. Nah. However, this is a hard concept for some people to understand...it's not a zero sum game here. Everyone wins so long as we are all kicking ass.

There's also the emergent task timer and task order up tools I've made. You can find all the stuff that I've done at on my site if these are the forms you remember.

Thanks jensized for the pointer! :-)

You might look into the lamps that Solux makes. They make full-spectrum halogens MR16 bulbs, and also sell lamps. They're a bit pricey, though, and the lights run hot (they're 50W), but the light is quite nice. I'm actually not that keen on the ACTUAL lamps they sell; I had one of the task lamps and the fixture head broke after a year. Annoying.

Sorry to see you go, nostrich, under what seems to be a cloud of self-doubt. I was just starting to get to know and recognize you too on the forums and twitter and had considered you one of us, but maybe that needed to be more visible to feel real. It also sounds like you're looking for your own sense of mission, and that 9rules sort of resembled it but wasn't quite "it". I wish you the best of luck in finding it.

I've been on a (dv) base for several months, and am using WordPress as my blog base. I have been pretty happy with it, though it is largely because I spent a week optimizing it to run well. As it's configured by default, it has a tendency to explode under stress unless you take measures to prevent this from happening. I was able to survive a DIGG onslaught and serve a peak 2750 pageloads in a single hour without incident. I've been keeping notes about the optimization on my blog if anyone is interested. The major cause I found was that the default mail and web server processes were allowed to grow beyond what memory the (dv) base can reliably handle. Secondly, there are some wordpress plugins that are quite inefficient that I had to disable.

I'm running a few sites on my (dv), and it's a great platform once you have learned your way around it. My daily numbers for all sites are fairly low, maybe 10K pageloads a day on average, about half of those from a Phorum installation. When I do notice performance problems, it seems to be due to network congestion more than server problems. I have seen higher latencies from (mt) than other services, and sporadic spikes of unavailability that I mostly don't notice.

I have a list of tips on searching that I wrote up a while ago for those times when Google just isn't serving up the good stuff: Oblique Searching Strategies

» Are you a touch typer?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by estarla.

I learned how to burst type certain words like CATALOG and BRUN, and worked up from there. I never learned the correct finger placement on the home keys, which is probably what's saved my wrists from carpal tunnel since my arms are angled just as they would if I were using a bent ergo keyboard. I probably do something like 70-80wpm without error. Wht's impotant is that i type as fast as I can generally think, which makes writing so much easier.

» Meeting vs. Productivity  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by cmak.

You might have been there not for actual productive work, but as a "just in case" resource. Sometimes people will pull others into a meeting just for the peace of mind knowing that there's another person listening. They may not SAY that, but it is sometimes part of the reasoning. I'm not sure if that was the case here...possibly it was an instinctual desire to look bigger (more bodies at the table on your director's side).

Just a thought, not that this makes it any less a waste of your time if it's stuff you hate doing, but sometimes seeing the underlying motivation allows ya to reframe these meetings in a more interesting and sometimes amusing context.

That's a very clear insight, Scrivs, one that people can steer by. It's all that dancing around to find the clearest and most direct path through all the daily clutter, though, that's the challenge. Example: "How do you make a profitable business? Don't spend more cash than you have coming in." A very clear directive, but when you don't have a clear picture of what that means, you're rolling the dice. Methodology, which I've learned the hard way, is another essential component.
