yes it is true. a lot of sites whose focus was search engine optimization also saw a drop according to some SEO bloggers

» Pagerank update in progress? eek!  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Kamigoroshi.

There are a lot of new ways to generate traffic. Viral marketing, affiliate marketing, advertising. Basically, not putting all your eggs in one basket (Google). Of course, Google is the best, or one of the best ways to get traffic, but you should not rely on one source of traffic, or income for that matter, especially because they are in control of if/when/how much money you make!

Yeah, 9rules used to have a really high pagerank, 8 or 9. Now they are down to 6. What up with that?

I remember seeing a video or webpage, either from Stompernet or Wikipedia, that says Google's algorithm takes into account more than a million variables for a site.

From Google:

Googlefriendly = Design & Usability + Web Site Navigation + Page Content + Keyword Research

I'm sure there are a lot of other variables like traffic and how often the site is updated with good content, actually, who knows what's in Google's algorithm...

I wish i could promote all my projects here! I think the leaders do get a little irritated when people post backlinks to their site because 9rules tries to weed out the bad and pick the cream of the crop.

Anyway, I like the layout of your blog, it is well designed. As far as the site, it seems a little complicated to me. Lots of ads and many places to go when you first arrive. After using Tumblr, I like the big button that says 'start your blog in 30 seconds or less'. I think every site should have a little tumblr simpleness in them.

In that case,

- Gmail
- Facebook.com
- Mint.com
- ListRankr.com
- Twitter.com
- 9rules.com

i am a web designer and bought the macbook pro 15 inch...i had to upgrade the ram to 2gigabytes as soon as I got the thing though. Now I'm up to 3 gigabytes of ram and have a 30" cinema display attached. I think the combo will last me a long time.

» MacBook For School  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by arthus.

I think you are making a great decision buying a mac!

I was debating between the macbook and macbook pro and I think 2 inches with the separate graphics card makes a difference in photoshop. However, the macbook is very small and easy to take around to class.

Either way, make sure you get your student discount on a laptop. I saved about $200 on my macbook pro buying through the university apple store.

does anyone here play second life?

Games Community — Posted: Aug. 9, 2007  ...   Last By: quietjune @ 9 months ago

I have heard many good things about the game and about how revolutionary it is. People have said Second Life is a great new way to market and advertise.

I recently joined Second Life to try and figure out what's going on and I, along with many others it seems like, are trying to figure out what the game is exactly. Besides it being your "online life," can anyone explain the object of the game?

My opinions...

I would let them customize the profile to an extent, but I really don't like on myspace when people choose a background color that is 2 shades off from the text. Facebook lets you customize now, but there are limitations.

I am not sure about legal issues with the site. I would think you might need a minimum age for your site and to monitor or restrict communication between people over 18 and people under 18...And I have seen some social networking sites where you must be at least 13 to sign up. I'm not sure why though.

» Trendsetters Are Not Geeks  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Michael.

I think if people find something useful, they won't care if they are a geek. It just so happens that sometimes geeky people discover great new tools sooner! Maybe they can understand the technology better and the future of it all.

As long as they can communicate to others that the website or service will be useful to everyone and not just geeks! I have trouble with that sometimes.

you could start with a blog and use the framework of something like Wordpress to play around with. You could toy with the CSS or php (whatever you are interested in, coding or designing) to start.

what is the best family networking website?

Web Community — Posted: Jul. 27, 2007

Is it just me, or does family networking seem to be an unexplored step for the social networking part of the web? Being able to keep in close touch with relatives who live far away, including messaging back and forth, posting pictures from vacations, having a family calendar for get-togethers, etc. would be a nice tool to have. Does anyone use something like this service regularly?

There are lot of sites I have attempted to use, but they are very hard to navigate or don't allow for an easy way to communicate to family members.

for example:
1. cingo.com
2. myfamily.com
3. ourstory.com
4. microsoft's family networking thing (I forgot the name)
5. google groups
6. mykin.us
7. potentially facebook or myspace?

» how do you keep up with technology?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by cooper.

I've been doing websites for quite some time, but only recently have I started researching SEO and started my first blog two weeks ago (bizwidgets.biz/blog). Every time a new technology comes up like optimizing your website, ajax, blogging, etc., I feel like I should have known about it a lot sooner. I'm attending a university in the midwest right now and I haven't learned about any of this through school, but it seems to be part of the future and I need to know about this stuff!

In conclusion, blogs, rss feeds and digg seem the best way to find new cutting-edge technology, particularly in my industry (web design). Am I correct?

» how do you keep up with technology?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by cooper.

Oops, sorry!

I am a web designer who took a break from the web while in college to go partying for a year...or so. I would have called myself an expert until someone wanted to partner with me in a new website venture. He was asking my opinion on ajax, ruby on rails, SEO and all sorts of stuff. I was shocked; I had never heard of any of them before! I thought I had been keeping up with new technology, but apparently I hadn't, so I ran to the bookstore the next day to learn about everything he was talking about.

The same thing has happened with my younger sister (sophomore in high school). She had an away message up and i had to ask her what it meant, like on TV where the girl is talking to her mom about her BFF jill.

So, I just wanted some opinions on keeping up with all this new stuff (without spending all of my time researching online) before it passes me up!

ok, how do you get people TO your blog, and if you can't talk techie, what do you talk about? :)

Is a blog just an ongoing conversation with anyone who wants to join in?
Are you the 'Forrest Gump' character that sits on the bench waiting for the bus who tells his story to everyone that passes through? Or is a blog an online journal of your experiences that you want to share with the world?

» Which OS X Leopard feature are you looking forward to the most?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by RightOn.

I've had a macbook pro since April and I will say that I love it compared to Windows. It's elegant, functional, and pretty. We do have our moments with each other (like when I spilled coffee this morning), but we make it through the rough patches.

I did have to upgrade her memory to 3gigabytes though; I don't even understand how they shipped the macbook pro without at least 2gb ram.

Leopard is going to be awesome on it!! Especially with the 64 bit stuff too! I'm ready for all the features.

» I'm a PHPer, how hard is it to learn Ruby on Rails?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by danoph.

i've tried ruby on rails and it's awesome and easy to learn, however popular hosting companies (godaddy) did not support it at the time.

so, i tried a few of the PHP frameworks to stick with MVC programming, and CodeIgniter is by far the best documented and easiest to learn, IMHO.
