» Quofda: Who was your best (or worst) elementary school teacher?  ...  Last Reply: 1 month ago by liza.

My 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Hawe, had the class wait in single line and very quiet outside the Staff Woman' Room while she ran in to remove her pantyhose. Then she led the class to a brook. We were instructed to remove sneakers and shoes. The boys rolled up their pants. She proceeded to teach us how to skip rocks and walk in the water to look closely at frogs.
That was 47 years ago. I have never looked at a brook or a frog the same way again.
The creativity and willingness to 'teach' in non-traditional ways makes her my favorite.

» Financial crisis (or, when the shit hits the fan)  ...  Last Reply: 1 month ago by auburn.

It's true I don't clearly understand this mess either. It seems there's enough responsibility for many thousands of people and systems. The part that is a source of shame to me is what the process will likely mean to the next two generations. My elderly parents who are not risky financial people at all and bought their home decades ago lost several thousands of their retirement dollars of stocks. This was money they saved, one dollar at a time. They were children in the Depression and it was a leap of faith for them to trust banks.

» McCain Suspends Campaign, Are You Kidding Me??!?!  ...  Last Reply: 1 month ago by RightOn.

I want a political leader that is skilled at multitasking. If North Korea makes movement in the nuclear sphere and simultaneously there are publicised investigations of horrible vet hospital conditions, the country has a horrific winter with the cost of oil, a part of Africa has a drought that millions are dying for lack of food and charter school national scores drop compared to inner city schools as well as the UN planning strategies about global warming and the Middle East in crisis------I want to know on a cellular level that my country has a leader that can respond to all of them. Not one of them. Not barging into folks already working on one of them.

» Help! I'm In Love With My Best Friend  ...  Last Reply: 2 months ago by auburn.

I so strongly agree! Your friendship can be permanent and forever, lasting many decades. You will share your life and go through stages together. Love may not be so long or strong. Talk like suggested and do not sabotage your friendship.

» Quofda: Democrat or Republican or The Little Man  ...  Last Reply: 2 months ago by auburn.

I'm a registered Democrat but I never vote straight ticket. Why? My parents are Republicans and my father, especially, is extremely knowledgeable of issues. I think major factors in his (their) thinking and voting are the organizations / lobbying power of religion (Middle East - Israel).
The major reasons why I am a Dem is the sensitivity of the party on certain social issues. I want the Vision at the top to be Dem but the money controlled by Republicans. My city, county, state and country could not possibly fund all my ideas but I want the ideas expressed and reached for. I figure the Dems can better do this.

» Schools eye four-day week to cut fuel costs  ...  Last Reply: 2 months ago by auburn.

Why isn't this perceived as 'flex time'? It could be a more flexible way to have the same number of hours of learning/education per week. Of course, the unions representing teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria , Security, support staff etc would have to be involved. Actually, I think something similar is presently offered in North Carolina but the reason has nothing to do with saving taxpayer money on utility bills. That area has the same number of days or hours per year but is on a 'cycle'. For instance, the sibs of the same family have school Mon. - Fri. September - June but the sibs from Family 2 has school Mon. - Fri. January - October. The goal of this has nothing to do with saving taxpayer money on utility bills but addresses major overcrowding.

» How Much Sleep Do You Really Need?  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Kamigoroshi.

I think the amount of sleep a person physically needs is very much connected with your age. Babies need huge amounts of sleep and this is not only culturally determined. The elderly (I am not courageous enough to define it!) need more sleep too. The side effects of certain medications or some illnesses (chronic disease) might effect feelings of fatigue, also. Nevertheless, assuming health is OK and no medication is involved, your're not super stressed out and did not drink coffee late at night, I figure the amount of sleep is partly genetically determined. What say you with medical backgrounds?

» Photo ID's to vote, is it REALLY a burden on you?  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by auburn.

Maybe there is a way. The populations described may not fit this idea at all but when kids are 18 years old in 12th grade, guidance counselors and teachers (whichever social studies is part of the 12th grade curriculum) have them fill out the correct form to register to vote. I do figure if a student really is in 12th grade it says they did not quit school, are not illiterate but maybe poor and not all are in the middle of college application process. Anyway, a percentage of people could be taught and formally register. The photo ID is already part of yearbook stuff or lunch cards...

» Feelings on Hats? Other stuff too...  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by Ozone42.

Wear the hat with pride. Anywhere. Everywhere. It's one of the few fashion statements left. You're right about finding them easily at second-hand stores and I add here, garage sales.

» Photo ID's to vote, is it REALLY a burden on you?  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by auburn.

Ozone42@ the 'poor and starving' folks, extremely concerned with the economy, employment and health insurance have a very direct reason to consider the election process vital. These are the people who need to register their opinions.

» Photo ID's to vote, is it REALLY a burden on you?  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by auburn.

It is no burden on me but it is definitely for the elderly who gave up their license many years ago. They do not even own a car anymore. If they could bring a telephone or cable bill in, would that suffice? Maybe a school tax bill or veteran benefit card...

» 9rules ... I need your help with the Presidential Election!!!  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by leliathomas.

Good luck to you. If folks decide who will earn their vote in the primaries or November election by learning how to play the guitar---this world and nation is in worst shape than even I thought! There are extremely important things you could do, such as providing transportation to those that need it to get to the voting booth. Contact the Senior Centers near you.

» Local or global phenomenon?  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by archangelchuck.

No, I never saw it. I really hope it's local and not contagious. Please, please don't bring it to NY State!

» What have you done to streamline your life expenses?  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by sevenworks.

I haven't changed my spending habits at all. This season in upstate NY does not need oil to heat the home. I always did combine errands to not drive a lot uselessly. Likewise, I only stop at garage sales if they are clearly on the road I'm already on. There's a certain amount of money of every paycheck I sock away in savings etc. but even that is the same as always.

» Are you really satisfied?  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by maritza.

I don't count the material things I have as the factor to my happiness. Maybe that's because I can afford them. I also don't count 'satisfaction' as the criteria. That strongly implies a permanent state of plateau. I want to always strive for the next level. Sometimes that level is not yet clearly defined. I am evolving. I am happy now and will probably become happier.

» Quofda: What is love?  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by Kamigoroshi.

I just thought of yet another level of love. It is the phrase "love my work" or "love my hobby". The very lucky among us say those phrases together. This love is a passion of sorts, it has to do with the professional excitement the object elicits, the feeling of self-confidence it provides.

» So, How Much Are You Paying for Gas?  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Gnorb.

Today the cheapest gas around here (upstate NY) was $3.75
I'm glad it's not the dead of winter and I'm ordering oil! I'm not really complaining about the cost of gas but the combination of grocery staples (milk, cheese, rice, bread, eggs) significantly increasing plus the gas makes for some upset.

» Quofda: What is love?  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by Kamigoroshi.

There's a 4th and 5th level, too. The love a parent feels for their child. This develops over time if the the child is adopted but it's there. The love a person has for an idea can start wars. Call it patriotism or nationalism or some other word that ends with 'ism'. The intensity and power of it, supported by others and strongly encouraged by a charismatic leader can be called 'love' also.

» What makes you happy?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by archangelchuck.

Also: the smell of my Bubbie's kitchen
bright red tulips, daisies and lemon yellow daffodils in bloom
having the time and silence to take a short nap
being in the public library or a bookstore
seeing tree buds in early spring
crossing stuff off my daily list
accidently finding a really good store or garage sale
hearing my son sing the Four Questions at the Seder
dirt under my fingernails as evidence I was gardening
being able to hug my parents
finishing a craft project that I'm proud of

» Sleeping with boss/friend  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by auburn.

Do not have a sexual relationship with him or anyone else at work! You described him as a 'good friend'. Well, friendship is vitally important and potentially is longer lasting than an intimate relationship. And stop right this minute having drinks with him, please.

» Do you have issues remembering important dates?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by auburn.

I, also, would not need that device. I always remember things like birthdays or anniversaries but I do it 'the old fashioned way'. I write it down with a pen on the calendar. I try and remember to mail a card or gift so it will arrive on the special day. Backing up the time-tracker, it might take me a few months to find just the right gift!

» Have you changed?  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by dieseldelicious.

I never went to any of my reunions, from HS or college. I truthfully figured that if I wanted someone or a relationship from those days in my life all these years, I would have sought it out or maintained the friendship. Have I changed? I have much more self-confidence and strength. I also lost a lot of weight and folks likely wouldn't recognize me.

» If you could write one thing on the Moon, what would it be?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by Kamigoroshi.

I got it! It surely would have to be music. The problems would be "what music" and "selected by whom" !

» If you could write one thing on the Moon, what would it be?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by Kamigoroshi.

I wonder how the peace sign and smily face would translate... I agree, the message would have to be pictural, maybe in sound or numbers code. Something universal, not a particular language.

An additional thing wrong with America: in a democracy where you can (should) vote and freely express your opinion, many people are not at all aware of political issues. They have opinions, of course, but they do not vote. It breaks my heart to see people in countries around the world who cannot express openly their opinions and not fairly elect someone to represent them. In a nutshell---Americans generally do not take an active political role.

» Dad's....are they afraid of their little girls turning into woman?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by auburn.

I agree that your mother is an untapped resource. After all, parenting together all these years gives her valuable insights. She's also a girl and may have some information to pass on about how women are valued in the family. Maybe your twin brother might be a resource, too. Before considering counseling, find ways to learn more about the situation. It's not that you must agree with what you learn and hear, but it gives you a starting point.

» Women Become Obsolete  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Scrivs.

Everyone is just seeing sexuality as a biological act. It's the difference between f-ing and loving because attraction is based on a lot more for the long term than how our bodies work together. That magnatism is there when you hold hands in the rain, and you're elderly and grandchildren bring you flowers of weeds. The attraction is still there when there's decades of joint memories but both people have facial lines and canes. People don't become obsolete. Try not to offend a huge amount of people who are not 25 years old!

» Fresh ears  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by auburn.

I do it with craft and remodeling projects, especially quilting. It starts with fascination and great motivation. Developing the concept, getting the supplies, drawing out the steps and several months in, I am very bored or something else takes my interest and time. Sometimes I only go back or finish the project with the motivation of guilt.

» Quofda: Why don't you read more books?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by auburn.

I read tons and tons for my work and at night, certain magazines cover to cover. The magazines are weekly news-type magazines. About once a month, I get to my city's public library. I really don't read more because I figure it's very self-isolating. I have the time, as my described habits present. I don't have kids home.

I guess this is a PS to my comment. I have two supervisors. One is gay and we have mutual respect. The other is my age but stupid. I know he has power but he's not very bright. I am hoping everyday he leaves. I would never have sex with my boss and especially I would not have sex with these two!

» Does marriage mean anything anymore?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by auburn.

In the US, I think there's a generational definition to committment also. My folks are in their late 70's and married much more than 50 years. They are of the same religion and live in the same home they bought under the GI Bill in the early 60's. My father had the same position for 30 years. This was the era when supper was on the table every night at 6pm and their 3 kids sat down. Was it always 'happy' for them? Marriages and long term relationships are not 'happy' at all times. I think it's this realistic view that tests the strength of any two people and every relationship.

» Psychological trainings: what? why?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by KVA.

I don't know what 'hard training' means. I have been a part of training about clinical social work and foster care / Child Protective services. A large part of this was learning and feeling the sense of empathy that various extremely significant losses and changes would be experieced by children. This is the closest I can come up with.
