Well there's the whole Freudian interpretation of Oedipus and his mum that you could look at.

The Crunchies, what a joke, a bunch of geeks with plastic monkeys, blathering about web 2.0 s*** like it matters...
Pidgin rocks, love the all the little options you get with it, like the preemptive screen that appears just before someone begins a chat with you...
And so you're expecting us to do your homework for you? There's only one way to deal with it in my experience and that's the hard way. Read some books, formulate ideas, come up with a main argument and structure your speech.
Finally, something that's happening in our neck of the woods...almost. Day trip to Brussels sounds very nice actually. Wonder how much a Eurostar ticket from London costs.
Nils, are you going? Are any other 9rulers going?
Seopher, there are actually quite a lot of top level Brit blogs and blogging/tech/new media events. As usual, they tend to swarm around London but if you search you will find.
Now I'm not a Scoble fan by any means, I find him far too arrogant for my liking, but the guy he's 'interviewing', Mike Butcher is the editor of TechCrunch Uk and he 's pretty keyed in to what's happening in the UK and beyond.
Yeah I think you're thinking of Zaoza Scrivs, but he just doesn't cut it imo.
Awesome! Thanks so much for that.
Thanks Tyme, any idea if there is a captcha plugin or some sort of anti-spam device available?
Most of you will probably have already come across these guys by now, but if you haven't it's worth a look.
They're a comedy trio that make youtube videos, got youtube famous with their David Blaine street magic spoofs.
It's also worth checking out their other stuff too. See their youtube channel here.
Here they are:
Part 1
Parrt 2
Part 3
Google.
I'd recommend Crucial and of course my affiliate code which will get you $50 off at sign up (code='twigged') ... yeah I know, I'm a shameless affiliate pimp.
They're still small, they operate a split-shared hosting system which runs very fast. (survived simultaneous digg and stumble effects). The company boss is very approachable and open to new ideas. Support is fast and efficient, and staff go the extra mile to offer alternatives in case you don't like their initial reply and there's also a 101 day money back guarantee.
I dunno, before them I tried Micfo, Hostgator, MT, Dreamhost and all have issues. I'm sure Crucial will have some too. That's part of the budget hosting experience.
But so far I'm happy. It's tough to make a decision, I've been in that situation so many times. The best you can do is listen to other people's opinions but ultimately set yourself a trial period and monitor the hosting carefully. If you don't like what you see you can pull out and head elsewhere.
Power can sometimes be reduced to the simple binary of 'empowered' and 'disempowered', but we shouldn't stop there. We can also look at the context of 'empowerment' for clues as to the components of a power base. What is it that enables one person to be more powerful than another? How did those circumstances come into being?
Understanding a wider array of contextual parameters can offer a greater chance of eluding or even dismantling situations of power abuse.
Think of a city's power grid for example. Contrary to the popular media image, it cannot be shut down by the flick of a single switch. There are a whole number of procedures at different locations, each requiring multiple steps and agents in order to shut down a city's power supply.
In an analogous sense, if one were to lead a bottom-up movement against the Mugabe regime in Zimbabwe, it would have to be executed through a myriad of channels that one by one dismantle the base of power. You could of course engage in an immediately destructive top-down approach, but you do so at the risk of strengthening elements of power and forming new factions and ramifications. This is the case of Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Iraq and countless other conflicts.
I'm just curious to know how many of you have 1 car for 1 person?
Now, wiith regard to the rest of the discussion, ie. involving various forum products: SMF is probably the best of the open-source solutions out there, providing pagination (albeit with difficult to use navigation controls), stickies, and the usual.
SMF is not actually Open Source, it's free but doesn't adhere to OS licensing as defined by the OSI.
Vanilla is definitely a nice, lightweight piece of software and it powers some huge forums. One thing that has always bothered me about Vanilla though is the sign up process. I don't like the fact that you have to apply for membership and that has to be validated by an administrator. I'd much prefer to do the whole email verification process if it means that my account can be up and running in a few minutes.
Has anyone found a way of doing this with Vanilla?
I use both Mint and Google Analytics. For small sites, these are perfectly adequate. Mint is really just there for its 'real time' capability. For more in depth traffic analysis, including SEO targets and ad campaigns etc I use Google.
I also like the fact that you can assign accounts to google and let specific people see specific data. As far as I know Mint only gives you the option of having it closed off or open to all.
I've not noticed any resource issue with Mint on my sites. It just seems to tick over quietly in the background.
Ultimately, I'd say if you're toying with the idea of buying Mint, give google analytics a chance first, it's free and it's far more capable, but a lot less web 2.0...
This is a young but promising site listing some of the best Open Source software on the web.
Um... what is all this about torment and intellectual superiority? If you don't think it's funny just say so.
Perhaps there's a little more to life than 'A' or 'B' ?
I can't believe people actually went as far as doing a lolcat translation of the Bible. I read the first chapter of Genesis and that was about all I could hack.
I think lolcats is probably funniest to the people who have been cat owners, particularly to the kids who grew up tormenting their poor household moggy, lolcats just seems like a logical cyber extension of that torment.
While I like the idea of transparent backgrounds, and I like the colours of your design, I don't think your current background does justice to the content, my eyes are too busy trying to settle on one colour. It's the blue that eventually pulls me in, but there's a colour battle always going on in the background, so it's hard to concentrate.
Another themes that has caught my eye recently and that uses a similar technique is Magnus Jepson's Woodpress theme.
Otherwise, in terms of layout etc, I think it's excellent, simple and effective.
No Rich, I assure you, this is the most pointless discussion ever. Not even a discussion actually.
Yeah I picked up his Dead Emcee Scrolls book last year, highly recommen it. Off to the download. Nice link btw.
My instinct tells me that brb is no more than 5 minutes, the time it takes to answer the phone, take a pee, save the pasta, pay the pizza guy or chat with the other person IMing you.
Yeah it has to be said we put on a poor show on this island. I've said it before and I'll say it again, we're still a nation addicted to printed matter. It's changing but not as fast as other countries. Personally I like both. If someone finds out about a decent UK blogging event, let me know. And we still need to have a 9rules UK event...how long have we been talking about that?
The other thing I was wondering is what would the UK equivalent to Vegas be? Blackpool?
Cardinal Point Here's mine. It's about my postcard fetish. Kind of sad in a an ok sort of way...

I now have absolutely no idea what prompted me to post this...could it be the fact that it gets dark at around 4:30pm?
I was just checking google analytics when I noticed that the project created by my brother and I just a month ago, Calling America, has been nominated for the 'Best New Blog' category!! Woot! Welcoming all vote love with a huge smile!
Yeah London Theatre Blog is run by me and thanks for the compliment. I find time late at night mostly (says he, posting on 9rules just after lunch!). But the postcard project is a no-brainer really. Find post card -> scan postcard -> upload to tumblr ... bish bash bosh.
I bring you my latest devious plan: Cardinal Point a new tumble log showcasing all the postcards I pick up on my travels. If you have postcards and a scanner, then get scanning and send me a postcard, I'll showcase it on Cardinal Point with some link love back to your Web home.
Happy marketing ploy to everyone!
Yeah their design and marketing stance sucks, everything down to the name Utterz...how could they turn such a great concept into something so hideous. Lack of capital? lack of knowledge on the development team?
Yet another web 2.0 wonder, utterz.com works somewhat similarly to twitter and pownce, only the main medium is not text but audio. You can submit 'utters' via your cell phone (which is how they make money) otherwise you can upload mp3 files.
Anyone using utterz? If so post your profile link and let's hook up on audio. I don't have a video camera, so I've never done the whole youtube video thing, but I can record audio via my laptop, so this might become a new hobby. I'll see how it goes.
Suggestion 1: Buy a treadmill. Tie the puggle to the treadmill, hang a bone at the front of the machine, set the speed to max, sit back and watch some Oprah...
Suggestion 2: Bike it to the park. Lock your bike up and run only in park.
Suggestion 3. Join local gym.
Suggestion 4: Keep a heavily regulated diet and do yoga at home for exercise.
Can't think of anything else right now. Good luck.
Why have we stopped eating each other? Surely we are animals too aren't we?

What's even more funny is that you seemed to have taken my criticism personally. Relax.
