Vlogging Virgin

Blogging Community — Posted: Feb. 8, 2008  ...   Last By: Tyme @ 9 months ago

I just posted my first ever video review on HeatEatReview.com and I was wondering if anyone else on notes video blogs (vlogs, the most horrific-sounding word in the world).

If you video blog now or you've tried it at any time in the past, please share a link to your first time on this note.

If you have any suggestions or favorite equipment, post that too!

» If I owned Google stock, I'd be freaking out...  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Joe.

Tyme, everyone should be more risk averse at they age. There's a reason why 2045 Retirement funds are more geared toward the volatile stock market than 2010 funds.

Vanguard's 2045 fund holdings are about 90% stock and 10% bonds

The 2005 fund is 45% stock and 55% bonds

That's quite a difference for folks who are young and folks at retirement. I just have to tell myself "Breathe deep Abi, this is a good time to max out your Roth IRA"

» Do you use Craigslist?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by designzillas.

Via Craigslist I've found/purchased:
2 apartments in Washington, DC
Concert Tickets

I've sold:
Concert tickets

I've given away:
Lots of furniture

But now that I'm in Palo Alto I don't use it as much to find/sell things. Partly this is because the location restrictions just aren't as effective - the entire Peninsula is a much larger area than all of DC. And partly because I am not on the prowl for a free book shelf.

What do I use it for? Entertainment in the form of the 'Best of' section: Best of Craigslist

Everyday I am more and more glad that MySpace didn't exist when I was 13 and practicing gang signs. Whew.

@Josh - I just imagined the look of utter confusion on your face

@fuscom - I thought the same thing, except I thought of a hand clapping game that included the lyrics "Shimmy shimmy cocoa puff, shimmy shimmy shake" Of course, once I looked up the lyrics I found 800 different versions of the song.

I am a regular hand shaker, but I was at a VC/Startup meetup the other day and multiple guys commented that I had a firm handshake. So, maybe too strong?

» Do you use Facebook applications?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by cpoteet.

One of my friends recommended the Neighborhoods application so that I could see (learn about, but not in a scary way, more in a mild, nice way) who else was on Facebook and living in grad student housing at my non-University.

So I installed the app. AND THEN IT SENT A NOTIFICATION TO EVERYONE I KNOW.

ARAHASDFGHAGD.

I could have sworn that I skipped that option, but apparently I was wrong. Don't the people I have as 'friends' already freaking know where I live? Yeah, they probably do. BECAUSE THEY CAN SEE MY ADDRESS. ON MY PROFILE PAGE.

ARAHAGAGHG.

I hate that kind of crap.

P.S. I am sorry if you're my friend on Facebook (because some of you here are) and you got that notification.

» Please explain Facebook to me  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Michael.

When I was in Italy I used Facebook to get my friends' addresses so that I could send them postcards. That was nice.

I don't spend more than 5-10 minutes a day on Facebook. Just like I don't spend all that much time checking out my calendar or looking at my watch. Facebook is a tool for me, not a hang out.

Now watch, I won't be able to get any jobs with Facebook app developing companies because of my comments ;)

» How do I get over my ex?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by realepicurean.

When she goes out, she never told me where she was going and what she was doing, me being miles away from her the tendency is to worry and hope that she’ll be alright.

Yikes.

You first lived 1400 miles away from her and then lived 10 hours away from her and she was supposed to tell you when she went out socially?

After reading your post it doesn't seem like either of you were mature enough to have a relationship.

Dang, I could totally mumble for 4 minutes. But maybe not do the beehive thing. It must get really itchy.

» Girls Like Ego ... Or Do They?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Jia.

Oh man, I read 'taken care of' and I thought "Yeah, when I want a massage."

I will now go on to agree with what the women (and Kami) here have said: confidence is important and necessary, being either a jerk or a doormat is not attractive.

Of course, there are some women who like jerks and doormats. I'm just not one of them.

» Which kinds of music do you listen to while working?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by jillmarie.

I start with Morning Becomes Eclectic then no music for awhile (just white noise) then I end my days with some last.fm for whatever I'm in the mood to hear.

I highly recommend trying out MBE for a day or two. They have great shows.

» How do you make your coffee?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by Chavez_Chavez.

I just got a Keurig coffee maker. While I adore the convenience, it it not the best coffee in the universe.

I accept this trade-off.

» Do you "need" interaction on your blog?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Hige.

HeatEatReview needs interaction if it is going to be a good resource. And I really like hearing about people agreeing or disagreeing with a review.

My new project will not have comments. It is a sort of journal/writing project, not a place where I want people giving their opinions on my life.

» Vegetarians/Vegans?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by JoeLencioni.

Oh yeah, don't attempt to live in South Texas. It was super-easy being a vegetarian in Seattle, but once I got to South Texas I lasted about 6 weeks before I gave up.

» Vegetarians/Vegans?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by JoeLencioni.

Check out the Amy's Kitchen Diet Plan at http://amys.com/special_diets/diet_plan.php for a structured way to switch to a vegetarian diet. And of course, you can check out the Vegetarian and Vegan sections on HeatEatReview.com to see what we liked and didn't like.

If you're into making food for yourself, take a look at Vegan Lunch Box,. Not only does she feature tons of recipes and interesting meal ideas, but Jennifer has tons of links to resources for going vegan.

» So... my hood is on fire... (Southern California)  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by auburn.

There are risks inherent to living in a lot of parts of the United States. It doesn't make what happens the fault of the people living there, but at the same time, we have enough knowledge of the history of this country to know that certain things occur or are likely occur or are unlikely but might only happen once and if it does happen once you're screwed anyways.

Sure, I hope that everyone in SoCal is safe tonight and that they are able to go back to homes, not destroyed homes, but these fires (and Hurricane Katrina and deadly flooding in the Midwest and blizzards in New England and earthquakes in the Bay Area) are not surprises.

They're not. They are emergencies, but they are not surprises. They effects of fire are saddening, but these fires are not surprises.

Some might think that this is "a blase/nonchalant attitude."

But maybe we should stop ignoring the environment and climate when we choose where to make our homes, how to build them, and how to protect them. That type of nonchalance has much more dangerous effects.

Jensized - I've never heard that one before, but I must get some sort of I-95 gear now that I've left the East Coast.

The weirdness at the end of the video is brilliant in its insanity.

» Weekend Plans (October 19, 2007)  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by estarla.

Yeah, I like that cushy/minimalist look. I'll have to do a sit-test on these tomorrow. Though, I spent last week couch-shopping with a friend in Seattle. It is EXHAUSTING. I now have hamstrings of steel.

» Weekend Plans (October 19, 2007)  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by estarla.

@Estarla - Ooh la la! I love it! I'm actually looking into this combo from Ikea (because I just measured and we definitely don't have the space for a chaise):

» Automattic Acquires Gravatar And Promises New Features  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by chapstick.

I thought about putting Gravatars on HeatEatReview, but when I saw complaints everywhere (and non-working systems on other blogs) I decided to go with names only.

However, with this new development I'll reconsider using the system on my site. It think it makes it easier for people leaving comments to develop conversations and relationships. Even if it is just a photo.

» Anyone interested in NaNoWriMo?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by peroty.

For a second year, HeatEatReview.com will participate in NaBloPoMo (aka National Blog Posting Month). It is a reasonable alternative to the pain and suffering that NaNoWriMo inflicts on friends and family.

I say that now. Just wait until it is mid-November and I'm going crazy from writing about Lean Cuisine every day.

» Which Fall fashion trend will you not buy into?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Cappuccino.

I'm psyched about purple. I've been wanted a terrific purple purse for the past couple of years, but since purple wasn't 'in' I couldn't find one anywhere.

» Could you Face Fast?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Sara.

I am not model, an actress or a hooker therefore should it doesn't matter.

Cooper's hit the nail on the head.

  1. I don't wear makeup every day. I wear makeup a couple times a year. I am lucky to have visible eyelashes, eyebrows, and lips. Also fairly decent skin.
  2. Provided I don't have to be in somebody's wedding pictures, I can go a year without makeup. Going without moisturizer in the winter would be a completely different (and painful) matter. The only thing I put on my body in the summer is Secret and sunscreen.
  3. I think I might start wearing makeup to see how people react to my made-up self. I don't know what the responses would be then.

Ann Coulter is the Carrot Top of political commentary. But blonde.

Even if I don't agree with a single thing she says, I have to appreciate her prowess in getting media attention for doing nothing at all.

» Have you moved because of your job?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by carmodyarc.

I moved from Seattle to South Texas to be a teacher. That was quite an experience.

Then I moved from South Texas to DC because I wanted a new job, but not for a specific job.

Now I am moving (from DC to CA) for love. This Saturday. I am fortunate to be taking my job with me (on a contract basis).

Thanks Scrivs. I made my roommates gather around the laptop so that we could all watch it a couple of times. Of course, now they're making the screaming bear noise. So maybe it isn't so great after all.

» Does The Size Of The Comment Box Matter?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by glenndavid.

When I updated HeatEatReview, I forgot to style the comment box (though strangely, it looked nice and big on the Admin side) and I got hell for it.

People really want to see the comment in its entirety before submitting and it is awfully annoying having to scroll to view a 5 or 6 line comment.

» I always value 9r opinions higher than others...  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by LorriM.

Cooper's right. The lack of white space and the width of the text don't make me feel good about the site. It doesn't invite me in to read, it pushes me away.
