Surely you've all seen Amy Winehouse accept her European Music Award from MTV? And perhaps her subsequent, um, performance?
Obviously, this has raised "discussions" in the entertainment media. Is this a good or a bad thing? Is it inconsequential? Do we care?
Personally, I'm forever veering between the two. Winehouse seems to be terrifically talented, but if she goes on like this the fairy tale will end soon.
On the other hand, she's a grown-up and she can do as she bloody pleases.
I've heard this must be hell for her manager and band, but "good press" for the recording company. Live gigs don't interest them, and as long as the albums sound good and people keep buying them... Well, hello irony.
Drugs and booze and the romanticism of throwing away talent, it's all fine and dandy, but in the end, it's just saddening.
Thoughts or industry insights anyone?

Well the most MTV awards are based on the viewers vote, they vote the artist, artist with most vote wins, I can tell you, if I'd voted on miss Winehouse here, and see she is that "happy" with her award the next MTV music awards I'll think twice before voting on her. It's not exactly the right way to "buy"/gain your audience.....

The whole show was a parade of poor taste, to borrow a catchy, alliterative phrase. Save for Justice winning Video Star award for the second year. Seriously: Linkin Park, band of the year? An Amy Winehouse performance seems like a nice way to ice the cake.
She dropped out of the mtvU Woodie Awards too. Some sort of drug-related fiasco. For the best? Probably.

All emo chicks have hairy armpits. You need to be more specific.

Yeah, people's vote counts; I hate to think this is what they want to see. Bread and games and all that.
As for the drunk hairy emo chick, yes, there have been a few. Amy's definitely not original in her performance as far that's concerned.
Anyone see her back on Buzzcocks? That's all over again these days too.
@Estarla Yes, sorry, I should've linked to some footage. Was lazy. Not drunk, unfortunately :-)

<insert "Rehab"-related joke here />
After her first album, her management company suggested she get help for her drug problem. She said no, no, no, recorded the second album, and look at her now!
At this point, she's singing to her own soundtrack. Talk about a broken record, though.

Still no link to footage? I'm curious! I'm curious! (But, apparently, not so curious as to go hunt it down myself...)

Here's your link
Wow.
That was absolutely horrible. I think the idea of flubbing live performances obviously no longer means "career suicide." Well...I guess we'll see where we go from here. Like in Britney's case, it seems like her horrible performance had no bearing.
On the other hand, Madonna's contract with a tour company seems to speak otherwise.

Dang, I could totally mumble for 4 minutes. But maybe not do the beehive thing. It must get really itchy.

Thanks, estarla. That was it indeed.
Good grief, I only saw bits of it. This was horrendous. The voice is there, the looks, but what a crap performance.
Heh, that is funny.
As for career suicide, no, it seems it doesn't work that way anymore.
Any news on the hairy chick meanwhile?

Sounds like the Fiona Apple freak out to me. Back at the 1997 VMAs. She quoted Maya Angelou (terribly) then called MTV bullshit. Then Chris Rock called her Fiona X. Too awesome.
She should have been more grateful, she managed to beat Hanson, man.
And for the record, Fiona Apple does not have hairy armpits. She's lovely.

Oh my God. I just watched it. What? What? It sounded like she was just making random sounds into the microphone. At least she was close to hitting the right notes...
