I'm trying to put together a few mixtapes for an upcoming road trip. I hate listening to the radio, and since my iPod was stolen not too long ago, I'm stuck making some cd's for the trip. At any rate, I have no idea what to put on it, and besides that I'm looking to find new songs/artists.

Any suggestions?

UK Top Gear asked a similar question a couple of years back. Wiki here - Greatest Driving Song.

For me, I enjoy my morning commute with some Incubus or Rammstein to wake me up. I get lots is disdainful looks though from other motorists. Less Than Jake's Gainesville Rock City is always on my driving mix.

The best road song ever is Manic Street Preachers' Motorcycle Emptiness.

You can't go wrong with Robert Randolph an the Family Band.

Blur's Song 2. Though it is a little short.

Bon Jovi's It's My Life. That's my favourite song to put my foot down.

I do have a 72 minute dance track megamix from an anime that's all about drift racing (Initial D), so that's pretty well off when driving really fast.

Driving is a good time to listen to the Shins!

Thanks everyone. I'm checking them all out. I've heard a few of these and they'd be perfect!

Beck's Information and Guero have great road trip songs. :)

@estarla: that they do. :) I'll have to post my song list when I'm done. I'll be working on it all day, trying to fill up about 6 hours of road trip into song. :)

Metallica: Fixxxer, Carpe Diem Baby
Nine Inch Nails: Capital G, Somewhat Damaged
Saul Williams: Our Father, Coded Language
Killswitch Engage: The End Of Heartache, Hope Is

I would not recommend Deathboy's "Music to Crash Cars To"

Summer Sun by Ellen ten Damme. Only works in the summer though :)

Josh: You know it's any powerballad from the late '90s. Like, I dunno, Vertical Horizion, 3 Doors Down, and The Verve Pipe (and their one very awesome album).

U2 - Beautiful Day
Queen & David Bowie - Under Pressure
Linkin Park - What I've Done (the new single...that intro is just perfect for driving)
Maroon 5 - Makes Me Wonder

Almost any Beach Boys song is always fun on a road trip.

ooh, LorriM is so right. An entire album of Beach Boys (minus the slow songs) always hits the spot.

In the vein of songs I would not recommend: The Smiths - There is a light that never goes out

Lisa: Yes, minus the ballads. LOL

A few years ago, I went on a road trip from CA to CO with my children, and one nephew. We played an CD by the Beach Boys, over and over, wiggling, moving and grooving, and singing along. To this day, on the rare occasions when we are all able to be together at the same time, we talk about that trip. My nephew, now a father, tells me he will play that very album, on future road trips.

Radiohead's Ok Computer or Kruder & Dorfmeister's The K&D Sessions

Rammstein, Killswitch Engage, Showbread, Avenged Sevenfold - all good for waking up on the morning drive. :)

The 88 - How Good Can It Be
The Cure - Mint Car
Dan Reed Network - Baby Now I
Section-S - Noisy Life
Bon Jovi - Have A Nice Day

anything with long winded guitar solos (or the like)

grateful dead/jerry garcia
dave matthews
steve kimock
hot tuna
bela fleck
string cheese incident

Any kind of ridiculous techno.

You know, it's interesting -- for me, it kind of depends on the landscape I'm driving past. If I'm out driving through the open West, a lot of times I want some good, hollow, twangy, soundtracky stuff to get my mood on. It also depends on whether I'm driving at night or in the daytime -- that changes my drive-time song mood, too.

That being said..."Life is a Highway," cheesy as it may be, is an excellent song to have come on. Also, "Wherever You Are" by Geggy Tah.
