I was just looking through my recent playlist the other day and realized there's a lot of bands I love that sadly, are no more.
- Stabbing Westward
- Kidney Thieves
- 3rd Strike
- God Lives Underwater
- Death From Above 1979
There's my quick list. What are some of your favorites?

Do I have to say the Beatles? I know it was a while ago, but they could have made awesome music for so much longer!
Blink-182 also, they were fun..

Genesis - even though they're 'reuniting'. They aren't anything without Peter Gabriel. All the good Genesis stuff was early, then they progressively got less progressive and then... eh.
And Triumph! They were awesome, too bad they have such huge problems. Then stuff like Boston, but I'm not sure even if Brad Delp was alive if they could recreate that stuff.
And I didn't know DFA1979 broke up (I'm pretty sure they're Canadian, all over our channels), but I thought they were doing some dance/rave/dj stuff or something.

Actually... I used to like Days of the New before they broke up because Travis Meeks is a tool.
Good thing the GOOD part of DOTN formed into Tantric... :)

Anyone remember Seven Mary Three? They did the song "Cumbersome" and one of my favorites ever "Lucky"

The best thing most of those ever did was break up. Especially DFA1979.
Soundgarden. The break-up was inevitable, given Ben Shepherd's breakdown, but it's still sad. And at least one of them is still making music, even if it is Michael Jackson covers.
Husker Du. Heroin'll do that to a band, I guess.
The Pixies! Man. At least Frank Black is still keeping busy though, and that's good - the dude has mad talent.
Some really awesome bands broke up just last year, too: Arab Strap, Le Tigre (pretty much), Hope of the States, Pedro the Lion, Sleater-Kinney, man.

I remember "cumbersome"... they played it so much on the radio that it drove me insane.
There comes a point where there CAN be too much of a good thing.
It was an ok song but I can't stand it anymore.

Haha. I saw Guns 'n Roses a couple months back at their closing show in L.A. I had pit tickets and Axl touched my left hand during "Sweet Child of Mine." The new guys were good, but you know it's not the same w/o Slash. It was good to just hear the songs live and you take what you can get.
I gotta give credit to my sig other for this one. Does Jeff Buckley count, since he's dead?

DFA79, definitely. Worst part was, they were scheduled to play at Voodoofest that year, which was turned upside down due to Katrina. And then they broke up, so we never got a chance to see them.
They broke up in fall of 05. Jesse Keeler (the bassist) is now half of MSTRKRFT, which is basically an electro/disco/techno outfit. Sebastien Grainger is working on solo material with his band The Mountains.
I'm surprised Talking Heads haven't been mentioned.

Sublime... but I don't know if it really qualifies as breaking up since the band kind of died with Brad Nowell. The other two members are now playing together under the name "Long Beach Dub Allstars" with a new singer.

* Gaye Bykers On Acid
* James Rays Gangwar
* Drug Free America
* All Seeing I
* Bauhaus
* Love and Rockets
* The Specials
* The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band
As far as I know, death was only a factor in one of those.

Glad to see my choices in bands is so excellent. :D LOL
DFA1979 I miss and Kidney Thieves were amazing. Though the work that Free Dominguez is doing now is beautiful. Very different from KT.
3rd Strike I never really knew much about but for some reason have their first (only?) CD and it's just a nice groove all the way through it.
And Stabbing Westward, I love mightily. Still do. Great driving, chillin music.

Mine has to be Soundgarden.
And, no Audioslave and Chris Cornell solo just aren't the same. In fact Chris Cornell solo kinda sucks (alot).

Michael: If you're still into that stuff, I recommend The Brilliant Green. I used to love them.
The first band I can think of that I really like is Ben Folds Five. I also used to really like a Japanese band called Fatima - they did some very unique stuff, but they broke up shortly after I discovered them.

Haha, how sad. One of my friend's husband is touring with him as a guitarist. :) To each his own, of course.

I'm kinda glad that Audioslave is no more.
I was going to put Rage Against the Machine on this list.. but they're back together. For now.
Maybe I'll get a chance to see them play live this time around.

Oddly enough some of my favorite bands seem to have reunited:
- Smashing Pumpkins (ohhh my precious teenage years)
- Slint (whoaaaa!!)
- Idlewilld
@Rich: Sleater Kinney broke up? Damn. I actually took my dad to their concert once. He loved it :) He disliked Godspeed You Black Emperor though because they were all facing the crowd (consisting of fifteen people) with their backs :)

The Pixies has to be, by far, my #1... even though they're back now. Smashing Pumpkins is another huge one that's back together.
I completely agree with Stabbing Westward. Darkest Days is an unbelievably good album. Pissed I wasn't paying attention when they were together.
I didn't even know Kidney Thieves broke up. I just got their newest album not long ago... didn't even know they had more than one album out for the longest.
Blink 182, even though +44's first album is great.

I can't believe nobody mentioned Pink Floyd yet! It was great to see them reunited at the Live8 (on the TV, of course).

I always said Pink Floyd would only reunite to save the world, so it was funny when they did Live8. I thought it was great how the London show was the best, beating out all of North America.

REFUSED.
The Shape of Punk to Come is a perfect album. Just perfect. Part of me thinks that it's better they broke up because I can't even imagine topping that album. It's that amazing.
I just wish they'd get together and play a few shows. I'd travel anywhere to see them.
