I have no problem watching movies simply to be entertained, to pass the time or get some testosterone pumping through my veins. However, I appreciate movies that touch upon deeper themes and attempt to resonate with our fundamental wishes and wants. Movies that try to teach us wisdom or heal some aspect of our wounded psyches. These will often have sad endings. Though not always.

With that in mind what movie or movies have 1) made you cry and/or 2) resonated with you in some deep way?

I'm man enough to say I shed a tear or two during Million Dollar Baby last year. Cried like the little boy I was when I first watched E.T and In America caused me to drop a few. The Wonder Boys, the mood of it, has always felt "like me" if that makes sense. Those come to mind right away.

Your turn. No shame in tears.

Ah man. You had to do it. Make me get in touch with my feelings... ok, here you go...

Shawshank Redemption brought a tear to my eye and so did the movie Ever After.

There are others as well. When I see a drama type movie, I really get into them and feel what the characters are going through.

Here's a question for you... did you cry when Old Yeller got shot?

Braveheart, at the end. Requiem for a Dream. Schindler's List.

Well, I'm a sucker for those crappy romantic movies, so I'm gonna fess up and say The Notebook made me cry, as well as A Walk to Remember. But I pretty much cry at everything that's sad. I cried when I watched Bambi too.

The last few minutes of American History X had me ballin' the first time I saw it.

bambi always equals tear, watership down too.

Bambi? Well ok, I'll admit when I was a kid and Bambi's mom died, that was pretty heart wrenching and after looking over your site a bit and seeing you're female, that also explains it. Women and certain Disney films are sure to bring a tear.

For the record, I own a bunch of Disney movies both on DVD and VHS. I'm still a kid... well a 30 something big kid ;)

Ruddy: That's one I totally forgot about. The last bit of American History X also tore me up.

The Notebook for REAL, I cannot watch that movie. I refuse to sit down and even watch 5 minutes of it for fear I'll drown in a puddle of my own tears. I think Big Fish made me cry too, and for some weird reason, I get those two movies mixed up a lot.

@seanrox: well technically I'm a female but only physically and biologically. I'm FTM (female to male) transgender, so while I have all the female hormones, I don't personally consider myself a female. I consider myself male.

@Mike: Big Fish is an awesome movie and that made me cry as well.

When I saw this post, the first thing that came to mind was whether to reveal The Notebook broke me or not. I feel much better to see that other men weeped like children too!

Independence Day
Pearl Harbour

Ok guys don't laugh now, but I cried at the end of terminator 2, it was just the thumbs up.

Also, I cried the most at I am Sam, when sean penn is telling her he likes to hear her read, it makes him happy.

I was waiting to hear the Notebook mentioned! I don't think I've met a girl that hasn't cried to that movie. It didn't exactly make me cry, but I definitely felt a little mushy at the end.

I can't say that I've cried for a movie lately. Back in the day I quite a little queezy in Lion King. Seeing Simba all hurting when his pops died almost broke me.

And now I feel like I need to crack open a beer, and watch football!

LOL JPhill!!! When I was pregnant I used to cry at many, many Fresh Prince shows! Especially the one where Wills long lost father comes to visit and then bails, again.....omg, I feel weeping coming on as we speak.

This may seem weird, but I get choked up watching Apollo 13. And The Notebook gets me too, although I refuse to cry out of principle. ;-)

Fresh Prince huh? Can't say any of those episodes have touched my heart like the Lion King! :)

Yea but Lion King is a cartoon.....Fresh Prince is real life !!! lmao....

By the way Griffin, this is an awesome post, although I'm a little surprised to see more guys posting here than girls.

See, men can be sensitive too!

Stefani, you gotta feel for a lion cub that watched his dad die.........I'm gonna need a minute.

I can count on one hand the number of movies I've cried at (heart made of stone and all). On the short list are Here on Earth, The Green Mile, Zelary (Czech film), and Anthony Edwards' (Dr. Greene) last ER episode.

Thanks JPhill, it's good to share a tissue sometimes. Actually another note about Weekend Movies made me think of dropping this one. Talk of sad endings and all.

The Notebook seems to be a popular pick. My wife starts crying when she sees a notebook now. She loved it. Me, not so much, but being the sappy sort I might have gotten a little choked up.

Watership Down was a good call karmatosed. That one always gets to me. Love Song for Bobby Long, another of my wife's favorites, choked me up pretty good.

I vaguely remember watching Old Yeller but can't recall if I cried or not. It was a long, long time ago. Probably did.

"I'm gonna need a minute".....classic.

I swear you people are all dead inside :)

I cry at the drop of a hat compared to some posts here (though I never broke down watching Fresh Prince). Since my list would probably consist of a hundred movies, here's the ones that got to me the most.

Amistad - I literally started trembling, and we were in a packed theater. Embarrassing.
Glory - Cried when I watched it in class in high school, for the 3rd time. Embarrassing.
Swing Kids - Anyone else even seen this?
Schindler's List & Life is Beautiful - Same Holocaust. Same crying.
Titanic - Oh come on! When those old people are hugging on the bed! I was depressed for days.
The Notebook - It's like a red badge of courage for men. This one was probably the worst for me.

Thanks all. You've given me a reason to go drink.

- Ryan

LOTR--I cry over the entirety of the many multiple endings of LOTR, especially the part where Arwen goes to Aragorn and you see Elrond in the background almost shedding a tear himself.

Stepmom--I can't watch that one too often, because I'm a total mess at the end, no matter how many times I've seen it. Damn, just thinking about the whole idea of it, leaving my kids behind and dying, is making me cry now, and I'm not even watching it.

Those two get me bad every time, but there's a whole host of others, like Titanic, Independence Day, and Somewhere in Time that cause a tear here and there. I cry at the drop of a hat anyway, over books, music (think "The Song Remembers When" by Trisha Yearwood; I almost had to pull over if I heard it in the car because I'd be bawling), movies, whatever.

I've never seen The Notebook. Maybe I won't go there, because if it makes all the men cry, I'd probably just die from it.

Lets see....

#1 - E.T. - Can't STAND the end of that movie... I saw it when it was in theaters and Elliot saying goodbye to E.T. just KILLED me. Odd to cry at an alien movie but I did and still do.

#2 - The Notebook - The movie was excellent and the end did me in.

#3 - Jack - A movie about a kid with a rare disease that makes him age at an accelerated rate. Pegged as the "funniest movie of the year"... the damned thing had me crying about three times (and not from laughing). Talk about misleading your customers. The whole audience was red faced and puffy from bawling the whole time.

Big Fish: The ending, to me, seemed like what a beautiful death would be. This one had me crying like no move has ever done. It was suggested once that this was because I saw my life in his.

The line that hit me was when the son tells the father, during the last story that "Everyone was there. I mean everybody." After says goodbye to his wife for the last time, I start sobbing uncontrollably. (Heck, I'm teary-eyed right now, just thinking about it.)

Dead Poets Society: Not much crying here, but some.

Life Is Beautiful: A lot of crying here. I've never been able to sit through the whole thing.

The Notebook: Actually I haven't seen the movie, but the book had me crying.

Big Fish
Finding Nemo
The Lion King
The last episode of Six Feet Under
Moulin Rouge
Powder

and I think I cried at What's Eating Gilbert Grape once.

@jensized.... I cried hysterically at the last ep of Six Feet Under...

I'm a big movie crier though... and these are just off the top of my head

Life as a House
Goodfellas
The Dangerous Lives of Alter Boys
Donnie Darko
Dead Poet's Society (or is it Poets' ?)
Never Been Kissed (when she has the flashback of prom night and "Like A Prayer" is playing in the background)
Homeward Bound
Crash
Where the Red Fern Grows
Brokeback Mountain
One Flew Over the Coo Coo's nest
The Little Princess

And I absolutely cannot watch that Humane Society PSA with Sarah McClachlan playing in the background and all the sad animals without having a breakdown... now I think I'm going to start crying

Sorry...can't forget The Road to Guantánamo... i was depressed for a while after that, in addition to the crying during the film

Shawshank Redemption, yes. Maybe more than once.

Grave of the Fireflies <-- I know of no one who has escaped this one

And not a full tear, but a welling of tears perhaps.

Dead Poet's Society
Pan's Labyrinth

Not cry outright, but well up a bit...

9 times out of 10, it's the musical score that's occurring during the scene that gets me.

@Fuscom: the death crawl thing made me cry too!

Other than that ... Munich's ending choked me up. There was the World Trade Centre at the end of the movie, very matter-of-factly in the background as Eric Bana's character talks to his boss about a war that would never end.

It was ironic, at best.

PS: And there's also a scene where he hears his daughter's voice for the first time and starts crying, all alone, in his room. That really gets me.

I have to add in Ol Yeller and Bambi....

I cry very easily and actually enjoy the process! I made a list of the movies that everyone mentioned so I can catch them all. Hands down though was 'The Notebook'. Sometimes I get teary eyed watching the national or international news when I see visually how people live or what they experience in other parts of the world. I like to start with just one tear in one eye and graduate very fast, like a sports car going 0-70 mph in seconds!

Another Shawshank redemption candidate here.

Also Cry Freedom back in the 80's.

Heck, anything with injustice starts me off!

Got to check out this notebook thing - how did I miss that?

Cinderella Man makes me shed a tear sometimes. As does Shawshank Redemption.
