He looks badass!

This is the real Batman series, not that corny stuff they pawned off on us in the 90s. Don't get me wrong, Jack Nicklaus was a funny Joker, but there was no fear in it. Heath Ledger is evoking fear with this one. Looking forward to it as Batman Begins was easily my favorite Batman movie so far.

The no fear is what used to piss me off. When I saw that the other day, I thought, "Ooooooooo!".

Heath Ledger does look pretty badass as the Joker.

Riddle me this Scrivs... hehe... when does this series come out? Will it be TV or on the big screen?

Um, this is the sequel to Batman Begins Sean so it will definitely be in theaters I am guessing next year.

That's Heath Ledger?! WHOA

Batman Begins was astonishingly good. I'll be waiting for this one.

Wooha. That looks great. Nolan is completely making up for the increasingly comic appearance of each Batman movie since the original.

@Seanrox
It's planned for 2008. IMDB says 18th July — but it's hard to trust at this point.

Ooh, this Joker is interesting but I have to disagree on dissing the 1989 Batman. Jack's Joker was a badass, scary is a crazed way -- I think the 1989 Batman was every bit as good as Batman Begins, just in a different way.

Which one would you rather find waiting in your appartment when you come home after work? </ExtrasReference>

Jack Nicklaus's Joker. He would more likely be throwing a party than killing someone.

hot damn this looks badass

Scrivs, I hate to be the one to say this but it's Jack Nicholson who played the joker in the 1989 version. But this one looks pretty cool, not like the comics but still cool.

dude they are gonna have two face as well

Haha Jack Nicklaus/Nicholson, same difference. Both old white males :D

lol and both are known to golf

Jack's joker was a product of the campy nature of his Batman movie. Put Jack as the joker in a dark bad ass movie and he would be fantastic. Jack can do dark, Jack can do badass.. Anyone remember "The Shining"?

Sure. I don't think anyone's riding Jack himself or his talents — it's just the appearance and nature of the two films we're comparing.

That's definitely more badass than this photoshop one.

I've never seen any of the Batman films. I've seen trailers but I was never interested in the films themselves. Dunno really, guess I thought it would ruin the cartoon/comicbook thing I had going for me when I was little.

That is really something else. Also a very surprising casting.

Although I remain a bit skeptical as to whether they can deliver a... believable... Joker. Burton's Joker (and, say, Penguin) worked precisely because they were functioning in a well-realised comic book world, not a darkly realistic one.

Isn't that the whole idea of suspension of disbelief? Personally, I think it's much scarier to have a realistic world -- one in which I can see myself living -- and then throw in a few unbelievable bits than to have the entire movie set in an unrealistic world. This Joker, if he's really as scary as the above photo makes him look, is going to be the stuff [my] nightmares are made of. Can't wait!

This is a fake, but it looks awesome- I had to share!

Gah. That tagline is really great — "Not all jokes are funny".

I really, really don't like this 'grotesque' look at all. The Joker has never, ever looked like this during his entire comic-book history (that I know of). Yes, the Joker should be dangerous - but not disgusting. Just because he has a huge scar across his mouth doesn't make him more of a threat. His core character is that he's essentially a clown whose jokes aren't funny - they're deadly. This new version looks more like a scary hobo clown crossed with 'The Crow' or something (no offense).

I wasn't so crazy about 'Begins'. And the cheesy rubber nipple Batman movies were worse LOL. It seems like everyone is still missing the mark with live-action Batman. Except for Tim Burton's Batman Returns. That is one perfect Batman film to me! :)

PS - Yes, Penguin was pretty grotesque in 'Returns', but in a cool, gothic, 'Tim Burton' style.

His core character is that he's essentially a clown whose jokes aren't funny - they're deadly.

If you factor in the fact that he is psychotic, that helps with the new image a bit. Not just a clown who does deadly jokes, an INSANE clown that does deadly jokes.

It seems like everyone is still missing the mark with live-action Batman. Except for Tim Burton's Batman Returns. That is one perfect Batman film to me! :)

It was Henry Jenkins in an interview with the creators of the show Heroes that pointed out the style of the show as being nearer indie comics than mainstream. Part of the popularity of Batman Begins, I feel, is the fact that unlike previous incarnations of the Dark Knight, this one actually seems plausible. It is this more reality-based Batman which captures the imagination, if nothing else because he's easier to see as a person, instead of just a hero. (Making Bruce Wayne the main character, instead of Batman, was a phenomenal move in accomplishing this.) Going along those lines, remember that the world in which the original Joker was created was a world which hadn't yet seen the likes of John Wayne Gacy (whose influence could later be seen in the series). I think looking at The Joker through the eyes of a more modern world, one in which we could actually put a context behind, it becomes almost necessary to create a more gruesome character if a more realistic* Batman series is to be created.

*Hummer/Ferrari/Tank crossbreed Batmobile excluded.

Come on, you know you all miss Adam West.

Do the Batusi. You know you want to.
batusi

LOL yes we definitely miss Adam West. The key phrase there being that we miss the man, not the Batman. Mainly because that was hardly any part Batman and almost entirely West himself. :)

If you miss Adam West, make sure to get your fill watching Family Guy or Fairly Odd Parents.

Gnorb - That's a great way to put it all in perspective. Thanks!

Jack's joker was ok... he wasn't scary to me. That movie really should have been named 'Joker' instead of Batman... The new Batman movie(s) is/are so much better than the junk that we have already been through...

Holy crap, that is the freakiest interpretation of the Joker I have ever seen!

This is probably a little late to comment, but I just have to say, I am severely disappointed in the main picture up above. Badass? He looks more emo than the frontman for "My Chemical Romance"! He's supposed to have a clean, yet exaggerated face that makes his grin and eyebrows look sickeningly unnatural. His grin is supposed to scream "Do Not Approach".

I'm sorry. Maybe I had high expectations, but considering what they did with Tim Curry in "Legend," Davy Jones in that Pirates of the Caribbean movie, the Aliens movies...making Heath look like the Joker as he should be should've been no problem. Hell, they achieved it in 1928 in "The Man Who Laughs." A freaking silent film! And this is the best they can come up with?? For shame...

I think you may have missed the point organs.

Gnorb sums up what the intentions of the new Batman is going for. It's taking place in a semi-realistic world and as such, you aren't going to have the exaggerated features that were in the comic book and the first Joker. Instead you have someone who with what amounts to a, probably self-inflicted, Glasgow Smile to emphasize his humanity as well as his insanity.

He looks seriously demonic, and I thinks that's good if you think of all the messed-up things he did.

How come Batman doesn't dance anymore? </simpsons adam west>
