I have been desperately trying to figure out the best OS to fit my needs. For those of you who are familiar with my first note, "From Street to Geek" PT 1, you know my situation. I am currently studying CSS, HTML, XHTML, JAVA etc. I miss out on a lot good articles, I need help in making the decision between Window XP Professional (which I am currently running), and Vista. Which do you feel is the better OS and why?. Thank you for your support, kindness and patience 9rules community.
P.S. Please post more tutorials at my "Make Tutorials Not War" note. It is greatly appreciated..

XP. Does everything. You're familiar with it. Doesn't require new hardware. Less bloat/better performance. Vista doesn't have any features you need for what you're studying... or anything actually.

Do you need Windows at all?

Vista ran painfully slow on my PC where XP runs fine.

Conversely, I didn't notice much of a speed bump at all. I imagine this has something to do with a certain bottleneck that affected peroty's system.
I'm not saying that Vista doesn't carry additional overhead (and quite a bit of it) but when you're on a more powerful system, the perceivable difference between XP and Vista gets a lot smaller.

Go to the Vista site and run the advisory to see if your system can handle Vista. You might have to upgrade not only for hardware but because some drivers are obsolete and are incompatible with Vista.
If your system can handle Vista (and although it says 1GB RAM I would get 2GB) think about what you are using it for. You're not receiving much of a benefit upgrading from XP to Vista. Personally I would keep XP and invest the money in tools that would help improve your skills. Or improving the monitor if necessary so you have a better idea of colors (some monitors are crap).

So from what I read briefly from your previous post, you're looking at starting your own web consulting / design company.
Good on you.
In addition to learning all the tools and techniques that go with web development & design, I would recommend you find some solid business sites and books as well. In those you'll find that most highly recommend not spending money on those things you really don't need at the moment, and are not critical to the startup needs or sustainability of your business.
Both XP and Vista will suit your needs in studying and developing some super fine CSS, HTML, Java...One is not dependent on the other.
The key to success in you learning about the industry and in building a consultancy, is to keep focused on the real need. From the information you've provided here, worrying over an OS is serving more as a distraction to your future more than moving you forward in it.

I don't use either as a primary OS, but I would absolutely stick with XP. The (little to no) benefit of upgrading simply isn't worth your time or effort. You're not missing out.

I would stick with XP, at least for now. I do web design on XP primarily to have access to Photoshop and to be able to test things out on Internet Explorer. If it weren't for those two things, I would never log out of Ubuntu.

A bit of an aside out of curiosity.
What made you think you would need any os other than what your pc came with in the first place?

Go for Vista, then you can have desktop effects that are almost as good as we have for Linux ;).
Nah, seriously though, stick with XP. It's been said before: Vista doesn't offer much more than XP.

Vista is a pain to operate. I would suggest staying with XP, if you are a Windows person.
Else, take the plunge into Linux!

My dad upgraded to vista on his computer, and it is a pain. It's not even that much better than XP from what I can tell. Vista has a lot of incompatibility issues. :(

Vista is great for XP users who want a bit of sparkle in the computing lives, other wise i dont see a huge amount of difference from XP (ecluding the fancy gadgets and flip 3d) everything vista does XP can do too with a few extra applications. Dont you think?

If you have a system with pimped out Hardware and a great GFx Card - Windows Vista. Its amazing on a fast machine, believe me
If you have an average Intel Pentium 3 or 4, with an ok GFx Card - Windows XP... Not too great I know, but you've got limitations man. Get Rich Quick. Don't Ask me How? I'm still tryin'

Stick with XP till Vista SP1 comes out. There are too many bugs and security issues, and slowdown issues, and compatibility issues to take Vista seriously at this point. Wait until the service pack comes out in 2008, and then you can decide.
I should know, I had XP and Vista dual booted on my computer, all Vista is, is eye candy, and a better system wide search function. It's a pretty cool OS, but it's not dependable, if your going to get it, make sure you dual boot it with something like XP.
I'm personally sticking with Xp til Microsoft gets off their *** and releases a good service pack for it.

As said, I would stick with XP for the time being, since it seems to be what you know already. Then you can start saving and get something that is a nicer environment to work in, Mac OS X. hehe! Sorry need to give it as an option, since Ubuntu got one.
Seriously though, is it really that important? If what you have now is adequate then keep it til you need to change.

If I had to choose between Vista and XP, I'd choose Windows 2000...lol Vista & XP have too much fluff to them which just takes up hard drive space. Windows 2000 was the best operating system Microsoft has developed....to bad people feel the need to overhaul a great operating system.

I wouldn't get Vista unless it came with a brand new computer. Tons of stuff (including Wireless Internet at some places) are still not supported and/or working properly. It is going to take a while. I am patient. In the meanwhile I might get a Mac.

XP is legendary.
Vista is pretty much the same thing, with all the eyecandy and overall better organization in my opinion. It all depends who you are i guess. I can spend hours on the computer designing the next ad for THISCOOLCOMPANYIWORKFOR lol and it helps if the interface im using was more appealing.

Vista if (and only if) you're computer is good enough to make up for the performance bumps. I prefer it to XP (except for games, but after I disabled vsync, my games performance is comparable).

XP. Vista is rapidly turning into Windows ME 2.0. It's a pig.

Stick with XP. I bought a new PC with Vista pre-installed and I've been experiencing errors, low performance and a sense of overall weirdness and instability. Wait till the first Vista Service Pack at least, but before that use XP (or Mac OS or Linux, of course!).

If you have a MONSTER machine and are not an audiophile with a home studio, check Vista out. It's admittedly a pretty neat OS, even if they mostly copied OSX. It is WORTHLESS for audiophiles, but a nice home office machine (and gaming machine if you have a top-of-the-line computer).

You can have my XP when you pry it from my cold, dead hands! Although I'd be willing to try Vista on my gaming box in the near future...
