Microsoft announced their new technology not too long ago and it seems pretty cool although the stuff you see isn't even in existence yet. It is called Microsoft Surface and starts to bring us closer to a Minority Report future. I like the interaction of it all and it seems pretty smooth, but the driving force (as is the case with everything else in the world) will be what devices use it and how they are implemented.
Also the stuff shown in the demos seem to be more of a cool factor than any practical use. Not sure I want to be able to split a bill that easily when anyone can just play with my credit card, but it was cool nonetheless. Overall, have a look at the videos to see some pretty cool stuff.
And kudos to Microsoft for finally making a decent looking site that wasn't all blue. They are learning...

Looks very cool, just like you I've got to give it to Microsoft for putting together something that is actually slick (product + website). The last time Microsoft did anything slick was probably something related to Xbox because god knows Vista isn't slick.
It's a bit unfortunate that the entire thing includes both the table top and the huge box underneath, I think it'd be really cool to just have the display top have the necessary hardware all self-contained, but maybe that's down the line a bit. Or maybe it's already in the iPhone and Apple can expand it to 30" screens faster and cheaper than Microsoft.

A couple of hours ago everyone was raving about a brand new product coming from microsoft. Now it's launched, but it's really not a product at all. The only thing they did was release a snazzy website that gave us information we already know. Sure it's a nice concept and stuff, Microsoft and Apple seem to both be going in this area for some of there products, display wise. But wasn't the way Microsoft launched this laim? Not only that, but this concept box they are displaying, isnt really for residential based consumers. And defiantly is not fully complete.

Yeah it looks like it is for businesses only to use as huge interactive displays.

Sorry if I sound Anti-Microsoft with this comment, but for me this is just another of those "we do that too!" products that they quickly pulled together because the concept is becoming more appealing. And mainly because of the iPhone.
In these days, it truly feels that Google, and Apple are the companies who innovate, and take the most risks, with their products. It's a bit sad that Microsoft is always playing catch-up in most of their markets, if not all.

I think it's cool and all, but that's it. How practical would this really be? I'm sure the price tag won't be small either, so if aimed at businesses, it seems like it would be priced way higher than, say, a creative white board, or even a huge projector to display things like presentations.
For the average (which they show in the videos), or even , tech savvy person, this still seems impractical. You would probably be able to buy a very nice tv and computer for the price that thing might cost.

I'm sure they were working on it before the whole iPhone deal, but it's still funny to me that Apple is coming out with a touchscreen phone and Microsoft comes along with a touchscreen TABLE.

I would not want to use it as a table. I would want to hang it on the wall and have it be my television and an art gallery and have my Zune magically stick to it.
Oh wait, I don't have a Zune.
Does anyone?

Give me one that will hook into iTunes.
And let me build a coffee table jukebox.
That would be amazing. :D
I love the thought that went into the web site too. Lovely piece of design to immerse you into Surface.
I can't wait to see what they do with it, though as had been said, it's all in the implementation and usefulness! And if it runs Vista god help us all! (Nevermind, it does.) Maybe they could license OS X for it. ;-)
@Abi: I know four people with Zunes. So I can confirm 4 have been sold.

The idea of writing software for it is particularly exciting, a whole new wealth of videogame ideas becomes possible.

Okay, so I can't turn it on it's side and flick through my album art... and I can't make calls on it, but hey! This thing is pretty cool. I'd buy one, if I could. I don't like PCs but I'd use this thing in my lounge as a funky coffee table.

I can see these things being in trendy, overpriced restaurants. I can't really imagine it in my house, though... first of all, can you imagine the fingerprints?! Cleaning it would drive me crazy. But seriously, as others have mentioned, since this seems geared toward commercial interests, I'm sure the price will make most individuals cry like babies. I'd much rather put my $$ toward a Macbook Pro with 30" Cinema HD display, which would probably cost less anyway.

I am not convinced currently beyond the 'oooo it's nice' how effective things would be. The running vista isn't a great start but by the time any of us really get to see them it will probably be a different operating system. I agree it's going to be high end hotels / casino and so on that are the places to start. I doubt in the UK we'll see them for a fair few years though. Interesting though and I'm not sure unless it did sit on the wall how much I'd want one. A wall gallery yep sounds good but again I could like Erin says for the same price get a macbook pro and display. Then again I am not convinced the personal market is really the one they are aiming for at least at the start.

Ah, maybe 9Rules will be able to answer what I've been wondering about now since I wrote about Perceptive Pixel a while back, but have been unable to find reliable sources on:
An article by Pogue claims that Jeff Han, founder of Perceptive Pixel knew about the iPhone in advance, and seems quite jolly about it.
EDIT: By the way. The Surface is astonishing. I'd like one. Send over a few bucks if you want to support a poor student in getting a Surface table.

For once I'd like to see Microsoft release something and not have the discussing degenerate into a bunch of Mac jackoffs giving pithy one-liners and showing off their trademarked iSnob attitude.
That said, Surface is awesome.

Surface is an amazing product.
If this were coming from Apple no one would shut up about it.
Credit where it's due, in this case Microsoft has a winner on their hands.

Maybe you should consider it a XBox product as they designed it and I hardly ever hear anyone diss the X?
So take "Microsoft" out of the equation and this is an great addition to an already exciting array of products that we (the consumer) have access to.
I have nothing against Microsoft. I love Apple. I wouldn't but an iPhone if I had all the money in the world. I could find a good use (or 3) for the Surface - so as far as I am concerned this is a great innovation. The iPhone - a PDA that plays music and is also a phone that you can control with your grubby hands, if you aren't actually holding the thing to your ear to make a phone call :-)
