Would you look around?
What are things that surround you at the moment?
Which of them you can’t imagine your day without?
Why?

Honestly? Except for air and stuff: my Mac.
Sorry if that sounds fanboish or shallow, but it's true at this moment.
What's yours?

Probably My Dog. I'd say a computer, but really I'd love to be able to live daily without touching the things... I just don't see it as at all likely.
I think I'm pretty flexible. I could probably completely flip my life around and be fine.

Definitely my Mac, sounds weird, but it's pretty essential in my every day life.

Cats, coffee in the morning, my computers, car, Cosmos at night, creativity. Hmmm, sounds like I'm fairly obsessed with the letter "C" or something.
Why? Cats in the house are a requirement. Love me, love my cats, home is where the cat is, and all that. If I don't have my morning coffee, I'm bitchy. I'm sure you all understand that computer thing without explanation. My car? I LOVE driving it. Heck, I love looking at it. A nightly Cosmo is essential to the state of mind, and so is daily time for creativity.

If I can't imagine my life without it, how can I even know how to answer your question?

This is a really good question when thought about in terms of contingency.
In 2005, my family chose to evacuate our home in fear of Class 5 hurricane Rita, which at the time was projected to target the area we live. After spending nearlt 95 percent of my life on the gulf coast of the US (Texas and Florida), this was the first time we ever had to do this.
For thee first time ever, I considered the liklihood of returning to a pile of rubble. So my wife and I carefully considered what absolutely had to come with us -- not my computer, but my data and software. All of our important papers and documents that we would need to get our lives back to a normalcy. Photo albums, primarily our family and wedding. Cash money and then finally a few clothes, snacks for a long road trip, gas and a couple of the kids favorite things, so they would have something familiar to them to help comfort them.
Probably a deeper answer than you were looking for. But I think if you really had to think about it, you depend on more than just your Mac and air.

Hard to live without air, water, food or even money. But assuming we're not talking about essentials.
Love in the arms of the one I care for and the company of my peers.
You can survive without it. No one can really live without being touched by it.

Coca-Cola, Tea and Nicotine.
Do NOT tell the wife about the nicotine part...

Just wanted to add that in no way did I want to devalue other people's "more serious" needs. Esp. Fuscom's story is a hard one to try and imagine.
Still, I do believe a computer these days could well be the only essential thing we need.
Think of it, when my house burns down (and I don't really want this, 'kay?) what do I need?
My eID so the gov't can identify me (and all my other paperwork becomes unnecessary)
My laptop so I can contact people, check my bank statments, and do work.
Work, then, leads to money, so I can pay for food and new clothes and pitch in while I'm staying with friend (or at a boarding house even).
Music, books, emails, archives, pix, video, the news, maps, shopping, looking for a flat, etc., all that happens on my Mac (or whatever laptop) then.
I really think it could work if you had to make it work.

My dog, my family, a computer, and electricity. After being sick for over a week, I realize how important my health is, too. I can't see it, but feeling like crap is not much fun.

Basically... my family and my kids but it would be and damned near IS impossible to function to my best as a graphic designer and a blogger without internet and a computer.
I'm without internet while I TRY to find a descent company out there that's not going to GOUGE my eyes out with the bill each month. Seriously... $75 a month for shit cable speeds is STUPID..

I still don't have a great answer to this question besides something generic like AC. I can go without most everything else and I know this because I have gone through stints without everything else lol.

For me it's music. I grew listening to/hearing music everyday, and still listen everyday, as often as possible. Listening to some right now... :-)

I go kind of loopy if I'm not near my Mac or whatever book I'm reading at the moment. Also: coffee. I'm a simple creature...

My books.
I can live without the macbook, without TV, without people (sadly) if I have my books. Whenever I watch a home makeover show, and the designer convinces the homeowner to let go of most of their books, I get so sad. I'm always thinking "get rid of the TV instead!"

My Mom stopped by and right now my kids and my Mom are dancing to Soulja Boy in my room right in front of me. Looking around my room I'd have to say my loved ones because everything else can be replaced.

Fuscom gets points for a very deep reply.
Like Tyme, Kami, and LorriM, I cannot imagine my life without my friends and my family. The world would be a much darker place without them.

Annie - she has given my life meaning I never knew it could have and the support and love I never knew I could find in a relationship.
Megan - the best friend and roommate I could have ever asked for. She's been a constant source of humor, hugs, baked goods, ears for listening.
ipod - I listen to music constantly.
macbook - uptime of 26 days and I continue to pound away on it and it's still rock solid.

Technology: the internet. Not only is my business interests online but I realized I shifted from looking at the local news to reading news online.
